Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Help! - Will I be able to ski anywhere near Chamonix this weekend??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey guys and girls,

Panic post here!

Me and about 15 work mates are off to Chamonix this Friday (15th) for a weekend's skiing.

I've been following the snow reports on "chamonet" and it seems as though there is a fair amount of white stuff now.

Trouble is, I understand the lifts aren't officially opening until the following weekend!! Noooo!

Any body got any inside gossip? are they likely to open a few lifts this weekend or is there anywhere else we could get a slide in, say within an hours drive?

Cheers

Thanks for the info guys.

I think the lifts officially open on 23rd of December but we are only going for 3 days so that's no good for us.

The trip is actually our works "Christmas do" and the bosses are seriously thinking of pulling the plug Sad

Just wondered if anybody had any inside info? If there are one or two lifts open that's good enough for me.

Not looking good though!

Cheers again

Ray Zorro, Les Houches is pretty low, I wouldn't have thought it would have much at all.

It looks as though a decent amount of terrain might be open in Les Contamines this coming weekend - and the top sectors there are east facing and generally very good for snow, as well as having nice long cruisy red runs. Probably the best bet in the area and not a long drive from Chamonix. Can always download from Signal in the bubbles if the lower runs are slushy. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Not sure if this helps but Flaine is due to open on Sat 16th Dec.
About 40-50 mins drive from Chamonix centre.

I'm also watching this post with baited breath. Am going to Cham for 1 week on Saturday. Skied the same week last year and there was powder gallore! It was great. My husband keeps telling me not to panic but I have kept from him the lack of lift situation in case he decides to cancel! I e-mailed Chamonet and they told me the lift company are under a lot of pressure to open as they have closed the Grand Montests cable car to fit a new cable and the tour operators will be giving them hell if they don't open at least one area (although not looking forward to the queues if that is all they open!) Sad

another snowHead and I are scheduled to go to Chamonix this weekend. Now I know it's all looking grim but on:

http://www.chamonix.com/accueil.php?ling=En It indicates just under the picture that "Ski resort opening partly on Saturday, December 16th"

and

http://www.chamonix.net/english/home.htm says Grands Montets opening this Saturday

and

I have a friend who lives there who called me earlier saying they had some snow last weekend and some stuff will be opening this weekend

I realise I may be sounding a bit hopeful here but hey!

I have heard that Les Houches is open this weekend. This is from a reliable source.

I have also heard that La Tour will be open, but this is more of a rumour so it may not be the case.

I don't know about Grand Montet, Brevent or Flegere. These 3 places are pretty rocky so neeed more snow to become skiable.

I will be in Les Houches on Saturday anyways. Reckon that will be best around here this weekend.

Is it snowing in Chamonix at the moment? Looking at the webcams it seems they are frozen with sun glare. But I thin I can make out some new snow (or is that wishful thinking!!!)

Could you possibly update us with a report after Sat, have the option of a few days away from Tuesday, so an on the ground report might help in the decision.

angelaclark, It is not snowing in cham.

The sun is beating down at the moment, but it's chilly outside. It hasn't snowed since last Saturday, but then again the temps haven't risen above zero since then either.

srobbo, check back on Monday evening. I'll let you know what it's like. Most likely I won't be near a computer on Sunday as the good guys in green and white are playing the rabid ones so i shall be in the pub all day Happy

I was up in Grand Montet today. There are some lifts open. The small chair lift that goes up to the Plan Joran restaurant is open. Then there is another chair open from there and the Bouchard egg-lift is open and the small chair lift beside the Bouchard. The runs are not in too bad condition. From the top of the Bouchard there are certain places where you have to go slow and pick your way around the rocks. Don't bother with much off-piste as it's too rocky. The home run is supposed to be super merde .... I didn't ski it, but the pisteur told me it wasn't good.

If you are certain to come over you can ski. If you haven't booked your flight don't bother.

I have heard that Verbier is pretty good at the moment. Mont Fort lift is open.

Smolo has about summed it up.

We have just got back after a great weekend. Ski'd Grand Montet with enough open to keep us entertained for the weekend. It was raining in Cham when we left on Sunday and the snow was starting to look a little sparse lower down. Another big dump is now needed before the rest of the resort opens next weekend.

It is forcast though.

Hope it works out for you.
