In this time of "vaches maigres" an excellent report on the ex-ski resort of Argentera in the Italian southern Alps which is enjoying some excellent snow conditions this season

Heading to Argentera after a few days in Limone! The main goal was to go a bit higher in altitude and to go to less frequented places to find good snow, and that's when we remembered an episode of bon appétit from a few years ago... So we headed for Argentera, 1h30 from Limone, just before the French border at the Col de la Madeleine.
At night, the resort and its numerous abandoned/closed buildings give a certain "shining" atmosphere, but that's without counting on the "grizzly bar" and its brilliant owner. Seven years ago when the resort closed, he decided that no one would make him leave and that he would stay with his family. He is trying to renovate the surrounding buildings and is even planning to run the first chairlift, without grooming anything, a sort of mini La Grave? "Segreto" he said! We aspire to be as motivated as him at 70
Anyway, time to ski. About 700m of d+ in the forest (very well marked) to get to the top of the first chairlift, and then another hour to get to the top of the second one. There is a big cirque around 2500m which gives many possibilities to track, a ridge on the left with faces well in the shade (see first pictures), and on the other side it was sunny. So you can choose according to the conditions! Of course we shot on the shaded side, about 50 of powder a bit windy (that's it, we're getting difficult...) while the sunny side is either crusty or spring snow. Further down in the forest the snow was still very good as it was also sheltered from the sun, just a few tree trunks a bit too hidden which can be tricky. In summary: another great day to conclude this trip.
The only drawback: the locals of the village sometimes take advantage of the spot to ride their snowmobiles and ruin the place. We didn't see any, probably they only go up during the week because there are too many hikers on the weekends. We like it or not.. |

Looks like they had fun, judging from the tracks. Maybe cat / snowscoot skiing could be an option?

Just make sure you get the right Argetera as there are two in Piemonte!
This one is quite close to where I've been touring a couple of times near Val Maira and our guide was talking about it.
