Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@dunc999, to be fair it says its a former steel mill. And, on the bright side, the long-term plan is to turn one of those cooling towers into a wedding venue, I can see the long waiting list now.

The absolute state of this!

This image alone sums up what a terrible location that Beijing is. Snow sports for me isn't just the course, run, event. It is the location and ambience - this games has no atmosphere at all. Terrible.

Can't wait for Italy, back to a real Winter Games location.

Like trying to re create the Sheffield Ski Village and re building the Tinsley Towers.

My first though on seeing it was it reminded me of the Sheffield industrial vibe! The sort of look you'd kind of expect for BMX or skateboard not ski and snowboard. Not that the setting took anything away from the stunning performances.

Well China got their imported gold from a Californian girl (who is absolutely phenomenal so no slight there and of course entitled to represent her country of heritage). But Kirty Muir places better than Chemmy ever did so is Freestyle our real strength?

PS Big Hair kicker not that much more than those on slopestyle and if they ski without poles beginning to look perilously close to that contrived acrobatic stuff of Ski Aerials.

yes, this... but, Big Hair... quite.

The whole "Spin-to-win" thing is now so prevalent, if you haven't got a 1620 on lock you may as well not turn up. We've already seen regular 1800s and even a couple of 1980s. The womens tourney is now the place to go if you actually want to see tricks with style as opposed to a human Moulinex hucking mahoosive kickers.

Contrary to some initial fears concerning the quality of the new Yanquing Downhill Course the BBC coverage was reporting that the international racers competing there were very favourably impressed with it, so it sounds like course designer Bernhard Russi has done another successful job. There was even some talk about it in future being incorporated into the World Cup circuit! Shocked (I'm not sure how that could fit into the existing fairly busy World Cup schedule, with a new Zermatt/Cervinia DH race already being added next season). However Chinese money and lobbying could perhaps influence the FIS to agree to that....

Alex Tilley got 22nd in the GS, she will be racing again in the slalom tonight with Charlie Guest.

I watched the GS on German Eurosport, the commentators didn't spot that one of the racers in the first run should be disqualified but the jury got it right.

@swskier, yes a great result. Yet to break into the top 30 in the World Cup. This result helped by the restriction on the number of racers each country can race at the Olympics.

So happy for Jacobellis. I remember watching her 2006 run live and have been rooting for her each games since.
She was pretty dominant through all the races, great to see the other girls celebrating with her at the end.

This morning Graham Bell said it was the snow. He said it's like skiing on sand when you have skied snow all year. Of course same issue for everyone but maybe the snow is unsettling her especially being a favourite and now her confidence is badly dented.

Is it more the artificial snow or the very cold snow or a combination of the two?

Extremely disappointing to hear Chemmy last night describing the snow as "very unique" rolling eyes

No wonder kids today can't speak proper like with role models like that, innit?

Chatted to Graham for The Ski Podcast this afternoon and he identified the whole Covid bubble as being a factor for Shiffrin as well as the snow. He also describes the Boarder Cross course as being 'like a blue run' and the downhill as the 'third easiest ever' Smile

@iainm, nice interview.
Graham's not pulling his punches, and quite right about the cross track, but as Emily says the general trend is to make the course safer after a crop of nasty injuries. Interesting view on the selection process for TeamGB - again very relevant from Emily's perspective.

Full quotes (although I obviously recommend listening to the podcast...):

"The course is too easy. The previous Olympic skier and snowboard cross courses have been properly intimidating."
"After the first few wu-tangs, it's just a ski test and that's why the fields are so packed. No one can get away because it's not tough enough."
"They've got no vertical. They are on a slope that would be a blue run for a recreational skier. It's like the skier cross courses that are set up in resort for the kids to go down."

Bulgarian slalom competitor Eva Vukadinova was not pleased when she had to abort her first run after having to avoid a course worker who was on the course apparently trying to remove a metal tool that had been left on one of the slalom gate poles! https://www.eurosport.co.uk/alpine-skiing/beijing-2022/2022/that-s-a-shame-furious-eva-vukadinova-has-to-pause-run-due-to-course-worker-at-beijing-2022-olympics_vid1626408/video.shtml

Edit: the metal tool was reported to be a gate key, a metal instrument used to screw in poles which form the gates. You can see it sticking out horizontally from the pole. If she had skied into that at speed it could have caused a serious injury!

@Alastair Pink, I thought she had a good case to get a re-run, had not checked the results to see if one had been given.

That was a really good insight from Graham Bell. Agree with the notion that they are competing on a hill, not a mountain. Even from the TV pics there doesnt look like enough steep.
Will be very interesting to see how the slalom turns out with the snow giving out when least expected.

Yes she was given a re-run, but quite reasonably she was not happy. This is what she had to say:

"Although that “I got my re-run”, we all know it’s not the same. Not when you have to ski down to the chair lift, go up, go down to the start (with my race ski) and start almost immediately. Sure, I may be not a top-level skier or fighting for the podium, but I also worked a lot to get here!!! Don’t I at least deserve the same CHANCE like everyone else?

“I am beyond disappointed and I can’t believe that this happened at a top level sports event like the @olympics

“Anyways, maybe it happened for a reason. I am just glad that I didn’t break my legs on that gate. One thing is to be on course to fix something, other thing is to leave a heavy metal like that on the gate. And on top of that to pretend that it’s completely normal.

“I am sad, really sad, but also happy and proud of myself that I was fighting till the end. I will also never get rid of the smile on my face, cause nothing can bring me down.

“I am beyond thankful for all the support!"

@Alastair Pink, Maybe it is time for top-level competitions to switch to gates that don't need to be screwed in. Everyone uses brush gates for training and for most lower-level competitions The course workers will be experienced people but you get out of practice at using screw gates.

Just watched the combined event, cannot get excited about the competition , the slalom specialists always win , the only exception as far as I can remember is Bode Miller , I just don’t see the point of mixing two polar opposites.

Sofia is not competing tomorrow , it s a shame, she is super exciting to watch, I suppose now it is between Lara and Federica, not sure who else could get the win.
I have been getting up at silly hour to watch a bit of live skiing but 3am is too early maybe the down hill next week Cool

A Winter Olympics on artificial snow on flat hills - what a load of rubbish.

And the fact that the Russians are competing just makes even more of a joke of the IOC

After that pipe-dream guff about the UK becoming a 'Top 5' winter sports nation by 2030, today the low-end goal of 3 medals seems optimistic. Knowing that funding always seems directly linked to medals, it won't surprise me if they see another slash to the budgets (because that'll encourage 'em!)

Apparently the Kremlin says the doping reports against their figure skater is a “misunderstanding”.

In other news, Russian tanks and troops are massing on the Sino-Russian border.
