The Gazetta dello Sport has an article suggesting an Austrian athlete threw a bag of needles and 'substances' out of a window during the raid, but this was spotted by the carabinieri, and recovered. Tests on the products are underway for identification purposes. Some 50 Austrian officials and athletes were subject to the search, with ten athletes asked to provide urine samples. 30 police officers were involved in the raid, which took the best part of four hours. The team manager Markus Gandler protested vigorously at the manner in which the search was undertaken, however the Italian authorities and the IOC are adamant that the presence of Mayer justified the raid.
In Italy under article 376 of the 2000 anti-drug laws, it is a criminal offence punishable by up to three years in prison to "favour the use of drugs or prohibited substances", and the report suggests Mayer has been cautioned.
Some background information from a previous MySnowSports forum discussion following controversy over a reduction in Mayer's ban from life to ten years in this MySnowSports thread

DB, few years ago that. Test the Austrian athletes for diethylene glycol and they'd all have to be banned.

Surely then they should arrest Bode after his public comments a few weeks back.

Reports on BBC radio that Herr Mayer was found asleep in his car, refused a breathalyser, drove off and crashed into 2 police cars (which were probably placed as a road-block). I'd say he's in a spot of bother.

Not sure that Bode has ever said that, but with regard to Alpine skiing I'm of the view that all publicity is good publicity. It's not just his controversial statements, but also his unique technical approach and do/die results which make him distinctive. The fact that Bode has generated more passion and interest among snowHeads than any other current racer I think illustrates my point. You don't have to like or even support Bode to agree that he's been good for the sport.

Heard that on an Austrian radio station this morning. They also said that Italy had the most stringent laws against doping in the world (3 months to 6 years Jail). I suspect some of them just wanted to get out of the country. I wonder if Baxter would of stayed in Italy had he failed his tests there.
The Italians seem to be out to get the Austrians, an attractive girl posing as a fan looking for an autograph was used to check on Maier.

The only reason Baxter failed his drug test was because the medicine he bought in the US contained something that it doesn't contain in the UK (and, one might presume, Europe). So the chances are he wouldn't have failed it.

Ok - have read a few of the articles and heres my 2p worth...
1) Have no problem with the fact that Italy has stringent drugs/doping laws
2) Given that a coach banned for doping was visiting the Austrian team - as well as being on their team photos - its justified to do a surprise test on the Austrian team
HOWEVER....
3) Doing that surprise test the night before the event resulting in sleeplessness and stress on the team is NOT justified.

A couple of Austrian biathletes have been withdrawn from the teams they were to have joined for Tuesday's races.... They suddenly left Italy Sunday, the Italian press has reported, not long after the raid.
Allegedly about 100 syringes, plus antidepressants, a couple of devices to measure hematocrit (the percentage of blood that is composed of red blood cells, both the number and the size of red blood cells, apparently if over 50% this can indicate transfusions/EPO), as well as transfusion bags) were recovered by police.

PG, Very ugly. If one assumes the worst based upon the alleged facts and some of the early 'hematocrit' testings and the subsequent 'no race for health reasons' decisions, it begins to look as if malpractice is widespread across a number of countries and disciplines. Mind you , given the ongoing 'World Cups' et al there is no reason why it should be country-specific.
Wonder if sport can ever be drug-free or are the chemists always going to be ahead of the game - or in a position where the drugs get so good that you can not differentiate between drugs and naturally-occurring conditions.

Despite all these goings on Austria had a very good day. 3 Gold & 2 Bronze medals in one day. Austria's medal count is even better than the US at the moment.

Just heard that there's a risk Austria could be banned from future Olympic Games for this doping scandal. At least Austrian could still race with Bode Miller though

The press conference that RacerReady refers to above, that was keenly broadcast by the BBC, seems to have stirred up suspicion rather than an impression of 'official innocence'. Here's some comment from an Austrian writer with their national channel ORF:

How? Miller is American, single and the only association he has with Austria is that he uses Austrian products to crash on? (Should that be ski?). Please explain...

This is quite amazing! Are any of the Alpine team embroiled in this saga, or is it entirely focused on the nordic athletes?

To my knowledge the Alpine team aren't involved in the drug alegations despite on the spot testing.
The press conference only seems to of made things worse.

That report paints a rather bleak picture. It would be unfair for the innocent competitors to be tarnished with alleged doping by a minority of their team in other disciplines. What was Mayer doing there if he was not authorised by the Austrian Olympic Council?.

The bizarre activities of Walter Mayer, disgraced coach of the Austrian nordic ski team (who's now been sacked), are reported in more detail by Deborah Hastings of Associated Press:

There seem to be several aspects of this story that don't add up ... primarily, why was this man still employed by the Austrians when he had been banned from the Olympics by the IOC?
At the time of posting, the blood tests of the Austrian athletes had not been completed, five days after the samples were taken. The IOC says there's no specific deadline on releasing this data, so the fuller evidence may or may not emerge before the Games close on Sunday. Associated Press again:

The Italian prosecutor connected with the police investigation into the Austrian team has alleged that they "frantically guzzled water during last weekend's police raids", according to this latest report from Associated Press:
