Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Three Valleys 2010/2011

In response to huge demand Very Happy here's an early start for the 3V 2010/2011 thread....

14-18 degrees today at 700m and drizzle, but there has been some significant snow about 2600m in the past 4 days.

however, the first lifts won't be opening for three months yet, so I'm worried that this base won't last Toofy Grin

Any views on snow conditions for 9-16th Jan yet?? Toofy Grin Toofy Grin Puzzled

If you can safely say that the 10th will be a powder day I'll start conditioning myself to curb my usual first night enthusiasm for the boxed red in the chalet...!

Here's hoping....

Meribel for a week on Jan 9th for me. In previous years I've purposefully avoided the 3Vs thread thinking to myself "ha, look at them, those herd-following gimps. There's more to skiing in France than silly overpriced old "Les Trois Vallees"... suckers!"

Who's the sucker now then eh? EH?

paulio, it's a cracker mate, fill your salopettes full of some of the best fast cruising slopes in the world. You'll get a crack at creux and combes saulire before those pikeys from Coruchevel are even half way up, then end the day with a blast down mauduit, not forgetting to branch right for several sundowners at Ronnies. If you're in the market for tuition then drop Derek at Marmalade a line, I had 2 of my best days ever tuition with him, and he'll score you cheap drinks in the apres.

The irony being that with the tiny, needy offspring coming along my skiing hours will be much more limited than usual, and I may as well have gone to some 45km of pistes el cheapo suburb somewhere.

That €12 beer is going to taste gooooooood though.

Is it snowing yet then?

Make sure to flash your iPhone around so you blend in well with the other gimps there.

skimottaret, things change so fast in my crazy world that "10pax self catering" turned into "6pax catered" at the drop of a hat. The hat being about 45 email conversations, and a dozen hours' worth of phone calls. But we're holidaying like KINGS this year, rather than gypsies. I expect normal service will resume in 2012 though, if the Mayan prophecy doesn't come true and we all die first.

I had my cheapest beer of the season in Meribel. Problem is I then had a few more to celebrate the low price (I think €1.80 a demi) and now can't remember what the name of the bar was ... will have to go back and try again.

ctskifam, there are some more reasonably priced places for food too if you know where to look, it doesn't all have to be 20 Euros for a spag bol etc etc.

I didn't go to 3V at all last season so I'm looking forward to getting there this season Very Happy

skimottaret, indeed. As long as you avoid Courchevel 1850 and anything attached to a lift station, food and drink it isn't any more expensive than any other large French resort.

Last time I ate in Kalico (on the piste in the centre of 1850, part of the main lift complex at Croisette) I thought the price of the pizza there reasonable enough.

rob@rar, curse you and your exception to the rule. Yep, Kalico is reasonably priced, but I'm not too keen on it, they can be very lazy in service and food prep, but that's very much a personal opinion. If I'm over that side I'll always try and get up to the Bouc Blanc, one bubble and a quick skid from 1850.

Dr John, Laughing

I really like Le Petite Auberge pizzaria in Courchevel 1650. Great pizzas, sensible prices and a short walk from the piste down to the main road.

(Edited for dumbness)

rob@rar, not tried that one, I've always used L'Eterlou in 1650, similarly on the road just off the piste. Another heroic lunch spot is La Dahlia in St Martin; blast the bejesus out of Jerusalem, cruise down, take your skis off, collapse and relax.

Dr John, only eaten in L'Eterlou once and thought it was nice, but prefer Petite Auberge.

cathy, Laughing The clever thing is that Dr John knew exactly what place I was talking about despite me locating it in an entirely different resort.

We went to Tignes last year instead of Courchevel to save money and ended up spending 50% more.

Slovakia this season for me!

PS has it snowed yet in Courchevel?

Not in the village, as far as I'm aware, but certainly several sprinklings on the Saulire since late August

suziemoo1979, like cathy, says 1650 tends not to be too crowded as it is at one end of the Three Valleys. There are some great runs down from Signal and Chanrossa and don't forget to stop for coffee, lunch, tea/drinks etc at the Bel Air! Very Happy

suziemoo1979, welcome to snowHeads! Very Happy 1650 is just brilliant: last season I skied on a boiling hot day when the snow all over the Three Valleys was horrible - slush with odd bits of grass poking through - except around 1650, where the snow was good and the pistes were uncrowded. And, as nozawaonsen says, you must pay a visit to Bel Air. Very Happy
