Snowboard Club UK - claiming to the be the first specialised membership club of its type - launched itself today. The website is www.snowboardclub.co.uk and very red-white-and blue it is too!...
SCUK has emerged from the successful website theboarder.co.uk, established in 1997, which has been the liveliest news and discussion provider on the boarding scene for some time. Its coverage of the UK snowdome and slope scene has been particularly strong, with a good sense of community.
SCUK describes itself as "a new initiative between Duncan Worrell of TheBoarder.co.uk and partners Stuart Brass and Spencer Claridge of Soul Sports." This suggests that the new club will not be owned by its members, but it promises discounts as the primary carrot to pull in those all-important members.
Will the members want to control their club, or will they be happy to leave it to 'business'? It remains to be seen!
Membership is £25 for under 18s, £30 for over 18s, or £70 for two adults and two under 18s.
[On a personal note, it's 25 years since I imported those first 20 snowboards into the UK...so any moves towards a national membership body for snowboarding is certainly welcome and overdue. Good luck, guys!]

Thanks for pointing that out, Philip. I put punctuation after the URL and then forgot to test it. Luckily no space mission will ever rely on my computer coding.
What do you think of the SCUK proposition?

I can't see it offering very much to members. I can understand that from Dunx's point of view he has put so much effort into TheBoarder over the years he wants to monetise it but it really does not seem to offer much to snowboarders just a few stickers and vouchers for your £30. If at some future stage they try to make the very successful web forum a members only area then snowHeads can probably guess what will happen!
The best community sites are free and run by people who have the energy and enthusiasm to build them for love of the subject matter. Once commercial interests come into play quality and objectivity dissolve. Anyone remember The Complete Skier? It used to be a great site full of quality articles and resort information until it became a holiday sales brochure called ifyouski.com.
