Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Go for it perty. Am targeting 20th April. Had physio session today. Assessed as really good range of movement but muscles are very weak. It’s funny things you think should be easy. I can reach my arm up a wall with effort but can’t do a simple move of the hand back off wall. Physio is a big fan of using exercise ball on kitchen island and squatting rather than lifting the arm up says you encourage same range of movement with less risk to the rotator cuff.

Sometimes it’s a question of having the right kit at home. I’ve not seen a physio for over 2 weeks, and I have an appointment next Thursday. I’ve still not got much further reaching up behind my back, though maybe there is some minor progress. I’ve progressed for lifting a tin of beans (400gr), to a bottle of wine (1.3kg) and occasionally a bottle of fabric conditioner! The broom handle is still deployed at times too.
I have some resistance bands with handles that I think are very good.
Today, lying down, with an 2kg weight in both hands I was trying extend my range of movement up and behind my head. For weeks I’ve got my hand within about 3 inches off the floor, but never touched down. Today think the weight did get me almost there.
I do feel a bit like I’m flying solo on the exercise front. Hopefully some new exercises will be recommended this week to get me over the line. 12 weeks post accident tomorrow.

@Perty, Yes, lack of training! I didn’t run for a couple of weeks before going to Austria, looking after a sore knee, so that was early January! Consultant concerned that knees & hips won’t be ready for 5K on 1st Sunday in May, though I will, hopefully, have started doing short runs by then. It’s a great evening run, family orientated, with no cut off times so, might decide to walk it, just to enjoy the atmosphere! (I think maybe my age might have influenced his decision too - I’m 62years young & started running 2 years ago Smile )

So am now driving with only a little discomfort and drove to Southampton at the end of last week. Can lift arm in front and to the side to about one o’clock but then a lot of resistance to going further. Accident was 7 weeks on Saturday. Arm has little power so strength obviously a major issue.

@Perty, my only concern is that you said you had your original fall on an easy slope. That said, I went on my mountain bike after 14 weeks, with the intention of not falling off.

@Frosty the Snowman, hahaha! Yes..a blue run, and fresh snow. I can't blame the conditions. However, if I do ski from 9th March, I know I won't be going at quite the speed I was when I crashed! I don't think I will know if I'm up for it until I'm there. My arm feels good-I had overdone exercises at the weekend and was a bit sore-Dr Google suggests I had aggravated the bursa at the top of my shoulder. So I gave it a rest and avoided lifting weights overhead. Today, unless I really stretch, my arm feels loose and very near normal (unless I want to scratch between my shoulder blades).
@dan100, I've had trouble reaching beyond one o'clock in either direction too, but I can now get my arm up by my ear provided I have a bit of a warm up first. I was advised I didn't need to use the broom handle anymore to assist raising my arm, but I have continued to use it just to add in a stretch to vertical which I am sure has helped.
I think I'm getting my strength back and then I try and exercise with my good arm and realise I'm still pretty feeble!

We're all mad Dan, my rational was that mine is stronger because it's all reinforced with titanium Laughing

You and Perty are intelligent people, whereas I'm a thick removal man, full of dumb ideas Very Happy

Great that your recoveries are progressing and you're both thinking about throwing yourselves downhill again.

FYI I'm now using a skiergo every other day. It's been great for strength and movement.

30 secs on, 30 secs off, up to 30 mins now.
First 5-10 reps there is a bit of stiffness and a niggly but slight pain, after that it's like a normal shoulder. 180 degrees from top to bottom. Also works the quads and a lot of core. Highly recommended.

@Frosty the Snowman, googled the Skiergo-found one very scary looking instagram post! https://www.instagram.com/carolinepearce/reel/CsREFo7rNCN/. Yikes! I think that will have to remain an aspiration..
At this point I might just have to stick to my resistance bands, weights and and get moving with some TRX exercises. Maybe a bit of swimming too. I realise I mustn't overdo it as my shoulder lets me know it's too much.

Hello again Fracture club chums! Very Happy

12 weeks and 4 days. Feeling pretty "normal" unless I push my arm to the outer ranges. I had a good session with the physio today who's recommended some new exercises. There may be a bit of a block as a result of a slight deviation the neck of the humerus fracture, but I think I can work on it and I'm determined to get as much range back as I possibly can.
Seeing him again in 3 weeks.
I fessed up that I was away from the end of next week and might get back on my skis. He didn't suggest I shouldn't.
Very Happy

My physio just rolls her eyes - am targeting 20th April (15 weeks). She was pleased with progress from last week.

Hello everyone.
I'm so pleased you are all doing so well.
My specialist and physio have definitely said NO skiing for me until next year. No driving yet and I'm still in pain after every exercise session, not even tried any bands yet.
However I'm allowed to lift very light weights but only with a straight arm and not when lying down. Tomorrow is my first hydro session, hopefully this will help the slow progress along.
Also I'm sleeping a lot better.

@Mrs NBT, I’m sure you’ll start to feel some progress in the next couple of weeks. I’m 5 weeks ahead of you. I’ll keep you all posted about whether I do ski next week. Hopefully some nice snow will fall in the next few days.
I ordered a shoulder support, only to be told delivery is actually 3 weeks. Grrr!

So hitting the gym for first time in 2 months. Cardio and legs only. Shoulder seems to be getting stronger. Aching a little more because of more exercise but not painful. Can lift arm to 1 o clock and perhaps have a little more range when I assist. Still aiming for a post Easter trip.

At last! This morning, 13 weeks and 6 days since my accident, I got back on skis and it felt bl**dy good. When it came to it I didn’t really feel anxious, but I took things nice and steady. Good snow and half empty slopes helped. We spent a morning lapping the pistes above St M - we couldn’t go anywhere else cos of wind and lift closures. Perfect! Mr P took the attached video. Need to be a bit more dynamic, but then again, that was ultimately my downfall back on 3rd December ! Very Happy

@Perty, That’s excellent! I should have been in Serre Chevalier this week but, another trip to fracture clinic instead - and not the news I wanted to hear, unfortunately Sad The bone isn’t healing as well as expected so, another 5 weeks in the brace, taking me up to the full 12 weeks post injury - & everything crossed it will have healed by then otherwise might be considering surgery! Very little strength regained in my arm but, the swelling in my hand has all but gone & now have a weak grip in my hand - enough to hold a yogurt pot so, no more chasing it around the table Very Happy Hoping to increase my walking in the coming weeks, especially as the weather is improving, so that I don’t become a total couch potato!

@Scarletgirl, that sounds challenging and frustrating. Walking was an absolute godsend for me, though the slippery mud back in West Sussex meant I had to choose my routes carefully! My arm was as strong as a piece of cooked spaghetti. It’s much better now but still nowhere close to being as strong as my right arm.
Your fracture sounds lower in the humerus than the rest of us. I think I did something similar in 2007…(skiing ..again! Laughing ). Took a while to heal, but no knock on effects in the shoulder joint itself which was a blessing. Hope it’s the same for you.

@Perty, That is the perfect description- like a piece of cooked spaghetti Laughing The fracture is just below the shoulder and has been hinging out of alignment more than the consultant was expecting! My shoulder feels fine so that, hopefully, is good news for full recovery! Patience seems to be the name of the game!

@Perty, It's so good to see you skiing (beautifully) and having a smile on your face. The snow looks divine Smile
nbt and I are supposed to be in St Foy atm, cest la vie.

@Scarletgirl, Keep going girl. I had your injury 10 years ago and I too was chasing a yogurt pot around the table, unable to open the foil or hold the spoon.

My second hydro session went well, I really pushed myself because I'm desperate to get back to cycling by mid May (knowing that I can't ski, its something to strive for). nbt will be dragging the tandem along our hilly local area, while I spin lazily on the back, admiring the scenery.

How is everyone?
My exercises are getting harder but I'm reaping the rewards. The half an hour hydrotherapy sessions each week, have helped with recovery.
I'm still a bit tearful and down, but spring is here and knowing that I am improving and being able to do more each week is cheering.

Had a good physio session today and been given clearance to load the shoulder ie weights. Pretty puny weights mind as the arm is weak. Physio pleased with range and development since last week. Still hoping I can ski in about 4 weeks. It’s obvious I partially tore the rotator cuff but now cleared to work on more strengthening exercises.
