Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'll kick off then. Awesome first ski of season for me in light fluffy powder in the trees at reiteralm, schladming.
Still dumping this evening and planai is opening larchenkohlgelbahn chair tomorrow which connects with planai west gondel so no bus needed to access top. So woth 5 lifts open Planai is going to be epic tomorrow. May there be many more powder days this season.

Bolloxs typo in the thread heading, see someone else should have started this. I can see an edit option?

For future reference just click the scissors icon on opening post.

@waynos, Can you change the title to Ski Amade Snow Reports to avoid confusion with the other thread, which is more for general info?

Skied planai today. Took a time for most lifts to open due to wind. I did make it over to Paradise area as soon as it opened. Meant I got lots of untracked powder turns in before the obvious stuff got mashed, not that there were many people out. The sun was in and out but so was the wind eventually a couple of lifts closed again. Looks like snow eased off now, calmer weather tomorrow, hoping for a good early morning session. Great early season conditions, still the odd trap off-piste to watch for. Maybe @flangesax can get more than a turn in tomorrow Very Happy

I skied the Reiteralm on Thursday 21 Dec (two days before the heavy rain), even then, below 1,400m awful conditions. Heaped piles of wet slush.

I wouldn't say it's awful. Was out today early doors, overnight freeze so piste hard packed early on turning sugary. At least most piste open, off piste pretty shot, though maybe some firn about. Still beats being in the office.

We got lucky with brilliant conditions 16 Dec to 22 Dec, the Reiteralm (lower half) stood out as unpleasant by comparison on the 21st.

We haven’t been to Reiteralm yet but have skied the other 3 mountains (Hochwurzen today) and the conditions are pretty good on piste! Gets lumpy towards the end of the day but the snow is really nice. Was thinking of trying Reiteralm tomorrow.
Had some lovely food in Seiterhutte at lunchtime today. Any other recommendations appreciated!

Going by webcams the Hochwurzen looks incredible … -6c, lots of new white stuff, bright skies and empty slopes.

Lucky anyone who’s there.

Austrians or visitors?

We stayed in Rohrmoos-Untertal the week before Xmas, the hotel had lots of Hungarian, Czech and Slovak families with school age kids. Chatting with the parents they said their schools were informed on the Monday that their kids had bad colds. Sound familiar?

+11 degrees C at 2300m today in Bad Hofgastein. Snow actually not bad to ski on but it’s not what I would call January skiing! More like May glacier skiing!
I’ve had warm days and soft snow in January before but usually the temperature drops as the sun goes down, today it just stayed the same.

Rain forecast for the next couple of days at low level and snow above mid station - hopefully!

Seems like it just sun for the next week - slopes are already hardbaked, icy.

Does anyone know if there's any chance of even light dusting overnight to help with things?

@Ionizingskin, Nope, but if you use more edge then the slopes are bang on. The run down to Flachauwinkel was the best it has been all season barring the Powder days. Little bit bouncy on the Kleinarl side where they've run the Slalom Races but also good. Cold temperatures at night for the next week will keep things firm.

If its on the piste, does it really count as skiing.

Is this the right thread for Wagrain / Flacau. If so any boots on the ground there for an update on conditions?

@RetroBod, Here or the Ski Amade thread. Great yesterday, bit of cloud cover and cold at night. Very warm today so slushy by lunchtime, spring type conditions. Should freeze tonight so slopes should hold up this week. Ski early for the best conditions. Chill PM!

@RetroBod, Best in the mornings. Great on piste above 1400m. Soft below that. 10-15cm of new snow two days ago even opened up a few off-piste options. Longer range weather forecast suggests cooler temperatures and precipitation when you're here.

@RetroBod, as above, it's been busy today so a wee but bumpy where the fresh snow has been chucked about - but everything is generally in good condition. It does get soft lower down but depending on your perspective it's still nice!

Skiing in glorious sunshine it was. Think mid-April. I heard a rumour today that Filzmoos may close after next week. Not enough snow in the valley and it is South facing in a lot of places.

Overdue update on conditions. After several days of blistering heat it snowed yesterday. Most ski areas closed last weekend but zauchansee , reiteralm and sportgastein open this week. Zauch yesterday for 8am lift, snowing down to bottom. Not much 10 cms but boy what a difference. Piste great to start with then headed off piste, surprisingly good, though soft under the fresh. Had off piste to ourselves.

Today went to sportgastein. The outer zone of ski amade, some how never been there before. Wow was awesome. Excited driving up with snow capped sun blessed peaks beckoning. With one gondola and one t bar not many lifts but 700m vert on offer, normally 1000m but lower level closed and all above treeline, around 30cms of pow,.was amazing until late morning by which time spring warmth was returning but got some awesome turns in and shared with a bunch of ski buddies. Best skiing this season for me was late Nov and mid April.

Sportgastein is not a bad little area given its only got a two stage gondola and a rather pointless t-bar. Held its snow better in last weeks rain then heat than the rest of the Gasteins.

@ster, yes the t bar seems rather pointless, all the more impressive such good terrain accessible from single gondola.
