Cycled up to La Bourgeoise recently, I think that's what it's called, it's a nice peak with a cross, just past Ranfoilly, and then head above lac de Joux Plan.
Towards Tete du Bostan
Giffe valley, Grand Massif... Samoens, Morillion....too steep to ski down, but ideal for running off cliff attached to colourful tarp
Last week saw the Mont Blanc Morzine rally.....went over Col Joux Plane and around back of Chery to Ecranaz
And world cup yesterday in LG, huge amount of infrastructure in place, should be good crowds by sunday

G’day all…. Great to be back for another season. Lowlight of the summer: L’Etape du Tour!! What a brutal day in high 30’s hauling timber up Ramaz and Joux Plane.

@Ozboy, my mate did it, set off with 4-5 visiting eng mates, all got separated, and then all but 2 quit at various points. Rob and one other dude made it to the end but he said it nearly killed them. And he’s been doing stuff like this for years.
Don’t know what the fuss is, I did half of Joux Plane once on an electric mountain bike, so smooth.

Apologies if this is a silly question... but looking into the possibility of a December trip and the opening dates for Avoriaz is later than I expected, do they ever bring the published dates forward if the conditions make it sensible?

@Soozm, yes, if the conditions are good they’ll often open early, usually just weekends. I note the PLJ area of Chatel is opening 9/10 December so with luck and decent dumpage Avoriaz may do too.
I have a “tentative” in my diary for a flying visit if they do - flights are only £60 that weekend at the moment.

@polo, d’you know what the big round thing is underneath the Belvedere chair? Saw them digging that out when we were over the Tour.

@andy from embsay, no, guessing a restaurant / viewing area.....the lift was replaced in 2021 I believe, and the only new ones in PdS this year seem to be Morgins La Foilleuse and Lac Intrets

Here we go again … no one (including Jesus) has the faintest idea whether this will be a good season for Avoriaz and a bad one for Chatel.
And I’ll give you a very “fresh in the mind” example … every forecast earlier this week was suggesting heavy rain and wind gusts up to 48 mph where we are in Cheshire for yesterday afternoon. The actual outcome can only be described as a wet fart with some blustery showers and a strong breeze at times.

Grabbing a qick few days in Morzine between rugby matches in Lyon - got my e-bike out yesterday and had a cracking ride up the Joux Verte and back down the Avoriaz road. Super early-autumn weather - warm without being too hot (unlike Lyon last week!), no wind and beautiful views.

Think I prefer a cold-dry winter,with great snow making infrastructure in french side, than the recent unpredictable warm-wet seasons.

Article about ski resorts today in the Telegraph mentions a new “mile long” red run in Avoriaz “Le Creux de la Neige” - is this a new bit opened up by the extended Lac des Intrets chair?

Andy from Embsay, the Creux de la Neige was an off-piste run that you got to by staying to the right of the blue lac run. The top was nice and steep and often got lots of wind swept snow, so could be deep on a powder day, but the bottom was fairly flat and involved a long straightline to make sure you could get back to the blue run.

Yes all those runs on Arare are going to be longer now, the new red will join into the existing off-piste route I described above, as it has nowhere else to go, anywhere beyond that is cliffs overlooking the Fornet chair.

Serma have said they'd be no re-shaping of the hill to accommodate the new runs, although I'll reserve judgement until I see them in December. The piste map shows the run as I described, can't make up my mind whether it's a good thing or not, the addition of a new run, but the loss of a good off-piste route. Probably the new run, seeing as it's going to be twice as long as the existing route judging by the piste map.

I guess it means there's no longer a bit of a hike to get to the start of the Jean Vuarnet run?
Incidentally, I've never done 'SnowCross Crozats', probably because I've never noticed anything saying "Crozats starts here". Is there a marked start? Is there a suggested route marked with poles? Or do you need to go with someone who knows it well? Or is it just a case of "Get down any way you like - you'll end up on a piste eventually, whatever you do"?

@Crosbie, for Crozats you stay high at the top of the Grandes Combes chair and traverse round the corner into the bowl. Just choose your line and off you go. There are marker poles. Depending on snow conditions you sometimes traverse off at the bottom to the right or you can carry on through the trees to come out nearly at the bottom of the Crêt blue run

Maybe it's because I never use the Grandes Combes chair (and always use Intrêts) that I've not been high enough to spot the SnowCross start.
Hopefully, I can give it a go toward the end of season sometime - unless it's never open late season for some reason.

From the top of the Prodains lift it is often quicker to ski down Crot and take Grandes Combes than skiing down to Intrets and standing in the queue. That alone gives you the excuse to try it!

There's an obvious place higher and further to the (looking uphill) left of the existing lift which I presume is where it will run to, Used to be quite popular as a half-hour skin to access some untracked snow back down to the piste where you started. I imagine it would be quite simple to cut a diagonal piste back to where the existing top station is to access the combes above the Prodains area.

@DJL, shhhh! We call Grandes Combes the secret lift in our family - up the gondola and turn left at the top of the escalator when everyone else turns right and skis down to Intrets/Stade etc - quick whizz down Crêt and a queue-free chair up!

@andy from embsay, yeah, it's always been an out of sight, out of mind chair for me. I think I also have a subconscious suspicion that it's always closed toward the end of season, hence always having to use Intrêts.
