Minus 9 in Wengen this morning, but less cold up at Scheidegg for some reason. Another bluebird day, with very quiet pistes. Snow is nice and grippy with the odd harder patch.
Lots of fun spotting superstar ski racers in the village, masses of equipment, food and drink being taken up the mountain. First downhill training runs are scheduled for tomorrow. Live music with Colin at the Anonym bar (in hotel Silberhorn) tonight.

Last time I went to watch the Lauberhorn downhill, I was skiing - went up to the top and watched a few racers start then gradually during the day followed the course down to the finish and into town for the ceremonies. Q back to Lauters was nasty so left skis and boots in the village and walked down to Lauters (where I was staying). I'd planned ahead so I had a torch and walking boots so it worked out very well. Had to pay quite a chunk to get to the right-hand side of the Wixi but watching the Swiss air display team in formation with an airbus in front of the Eiger was pretty spectacular too.
I don't think I'd go again as I am more of a skiier than an observer so in some ways it was a day of wasted skiing (and the beer up the mountain was very pricey) but as a one-off I think it was worth it.

A quick one...... as someone who hasn't been to the area before, is it a good options for Easter Hols - 5th April or is it too low, in fact is it even open?

Really depends on the season. I've been there in March when the lower runs were all closed but I've also been there in April when the snow was amazing. I'd say it's totally hit and miss. Sorry - not a great answer but you might get some indications by early March how good it will still be by early April.

More super weather today, and less cold. Snow cannons were running overnight at Scheidegg, so most of the hard patches on the pistes are gone. The first training runs for the downhill took place this afternoon, so there were big crowds of spectators on the Lauberhorn. Stefan Rogentin (SUI) was first to go.
Bumped into @Rogerdodger, in the village this afternoon, he'd skinned up from Lauterbrunnen on the old railway track - chapeau!

In 2020 (I think it was March) I was in Wengen for a week, got in 2 days skiing then they closed the lifts as Covid restrictions came in. Fortunately it was nice weather so got in some nice walks during the rest of the week, including a walk down the old railway track. I noticed even back then that there were some sections where tree saplings had started growing up from the trackbed, 5 years later I expect that they'll have grown even more and will now be more of an obstacle. Chapeau to @Rogerdodger for skinning up!

Well gentlemen, the situation is as follows. Walking access is probably not allowed. I have queried this and had muted "oh it's ok", doubt it would stand up in court.
The old line was built on too severe a gradient which is why it was re-engineered. Jungfraubahnen have the liability on the bridges and retaining walls. Inspections are undertaken periodically and work is undertaken to provide access as required. Nature being what it is the trees and shrubs keep growing year on year. It's a good job my surname is Jones, I certainly felt like "Indiana" this afternoon.

It’s that time of year again, the Lauberhorn races have come to town. The Friday race has always been much quieter than Saturday's downhill, but this year Wengen is already packed with fans. We wanted to avoid the crowds going up on the train, so we skied from Männlichen over to Eigergletscher and watched the race in the Wall Bar. Big crowds gathered on the Lauberhorn for the air show.
Anyhow, it was a good day, as a Swiss guy won the Super-G so everyone was happy. Add to that the perfect weather and firm, fast pistes, and there's really nothing to complain about today. More craziness tomorrow with the downhill.

Hi everyone
So, my OH and I are heading to the Jungfrau area for the first time ever on Wednesday and we can't wait.
We are staying in a lovely airbnb in Lauterbrunnen right next to the Staubbach Falls.
Firstly, the age old question....how are the piste conditions at the moment?
Just after some general advice and tips from the experts! We will need to rent some skis, so if anyone can recommend a decent rental shop that would be great! Its our mini-moon after getting married on Friday, so we are wanting to treat ourselves a little with some fabulous food (both on the mountains and off them) so any suggestions are most welcome.
Are there any other must dos in the area apart from the skiing?
Looking at the piste map, the best access to skiing seems to be the train station in the village to Wengen and up or the cable car up the other way towards Murren? Is it worth going up the other way towards the Stechelberg lift to access Murren? We have a rental car if we need it but I'm sure there is great public transport as well.
Is it possible to ski over to the other side of Grindelwald and up the Schwarzhorn and back in a day or is that pushing it for time?
Finally, and a bit of an odd request and I did ask in a separate thread I posted a while ago before finding this one....we are looking for a local-ish photographer to maybe take some photos of us as in the mountains as a post-wedding treat. Does anyone know of a decent photographer who offers such services?
A millions questions I know....apologies! But any suggestions would be ace!
Cheers

@Fridge03, from @telford_mike report and photos the conditions look amazing at the moment, what's not to like!
In terms of ski hire I don't know if there's anywhere in Lauterbrunnen, when I was looking just before Christmas it looked like there had been a place in Lauterbrunnen but it closed down. We used Alpia Sport in Wengen, they were very friendly and helpful if very pricey... but that's standard for Wengen! Would definitely recommend them.
From Lauterbrunnen you can easily ski both Wengen and Murren and would definitely recommend doing both given your location bang in the middle. You'll probably spend more time in the Wengen area as its much larger but both great.
Getting over to Grindelwald from Lauterbrunnen on skis is doable but a fair trek ... we'd hoped to do so but that was from Wengen but unfortunately the First area in Grindelwald didn't open untill the day we were leaving.

Oh and touristy and expensive but if you've not done it before it's worth going up Jungfraujoch for truly fabulous views. Don't bother if the weather and visibility are no good though, look at the weather forecast and book for the following day.
Sure I saw your photography question answered somewhere else, personally haven't a clue
Enjoy your trip, I'm absolutely sure you will!

Piste conditions good at the moment, firm and grippy, whole area open.
Crystal sport in Lauterbrunnen will sort out your rental equipment.
Food - book a table at the Caprice in Wengen - lovely service and food. Eiger in Wengen (next to the station) also very good.
Access to skiing - train up to Wengen and cable car to Männlichen is fastest. Absolutely no point using a car - you'll just have to pay to park it. Cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and train to Winteregg is the easiest way to access Mürren's skiing.
Yes, with an early start you can get across to Grindelwald and get up to First via the gondola. Either take the train via Zweilütschinen or go over the top via Wengen/Männlichen/Terminal.
Photographer Emma Wilson as previously advised.

I think @telford_mike, has covered all your questions @Fridge03,
Regarding food there is one establishment that gets missed. The Stechelberg Hotel, you could drive but the post bus turns around in the carpark, so bus is worthwhile.
Hotel looks a little tired and drab but don't be fooled the cuisine has been fabulous for years.
Would repeat Mike's directions above, for Grindelwald take the mainline train down to Zweilütschinen and change for Grindy. Walk 75metres to the bus and this takes you to Firstbahn.
This sounds more complex than it is. Would strongly recommend that you visit First, the views are spectacular, Eiger from an odd angle, Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and a glimpse of the vast glacial region south of Eiger.
Have a great trip.

Hi everyone, we are considering the Jungfrau region for Feb half term (22/2-1/3 for us) and I was looking for some location advice. We're looking at Grindelwald (we're driving down and the idea of transferring 4 people's luggage and skis on the train with the two children to get to Wengen does not appeal...). Is it worth sacrificing a bit of space to be near a lift, or are the buses good enough that we should pick the nicest apartment regardless? Looking at the map I think we'd probably be doing most skiing on the Kleine Scheidegg side.
Apologies for potentially stupid questions; I've just realised that we haven't visited a new-to-us ski area since 2018 and my brain is broken by options.

The 121 bus goes to Terminal regularly, although it was busy coming back to town. Every 15mins. The lift queues at Terminal were very short. We stayed up by Gaggi Sage, on the 122. The 122 is every 30mins, which is why it was a real scrum to change onto it at the central bus station. It was a pain to come down to the central bus station and get onto the 121, but not too bad. Coming back was worse. We tended to take the 121 all the way through the town past the Firstbahn and get on the 122 coming back when it was still empty!!
I suspect the train from Terminal up to town might be a decent option.

How often is the big pintenfritz sledge run open all the way down? Every year? Really wanted to do it, on our last day here today hiked all the way up, crashed about 2 minutes down and the sledge slid down the mountain had to hike all the way back down. We’ll be back next year and really hoping it will be fully open then or at some point in the next couple years.

On a skiing topic: Grindelwald descended into chaos this morning as Firstbahn developed a technical fault. Initial info suggested all good by 10am, this was revised to midday.
Not an encouraging picture. My small party went up to Oberer Gletscher (Wetterhorn Hotel) where we put skins on, we set off up Stepfi piste with no specific intention.
We ended up exploring an area fairly close too, but not visible from a piste. A delightful "secret alp".
Our reward was a beautiful sunny descent on superb spring snow, a line and route that has taken 20 years to find!
Our latest news on Firstbahn is not good, possibility of structural problem to a pylon/support on the approach to Schreckfeld station.

Heads up for anyone looking for a transfer. Whilst I haven't found it myself, a friend has found, on SBB, a combined transfer & lift pass at extremely competitive terms. It sounds as if it is well hidden on the website/app but could well be worth investing an hour to search it out.

Personally in that case I'd try to stay within boot-stomping distance to Terminal for Wengen-side lifts. Otherwise if you don't time the buses right you can end up waiting 20 mins for a bus back into town which is a bit of a bore. On the other hand, it's not that big a deal if you find better or better value accommodation elsewhere.

Winter returns in style, terrific powder fest up on Grindelwald First today.
MeteoSwiss had forecast 13cm yesterday. It rained heavily all afternoon and late into the evening.
My suspicions were correct , we encountered 60 CMS ( measured) and in places far greater depths than that.

Paywalled sadly but one can see the direction of travel - I always felt Jungfrau was a relatively good value skiing area, without the cachet of Davos or St Moritz, and with decent but not exclusive hotels - I fear it is now heading in very upmarket and way outside the budget of most mortals
