Skiing begins at Kleine Scheidegg this weekend, with a grand total of 1 lift open. Predictably it’s the Arven chair.

Too soon to say. Freezing level is forecast to be 3000 to 3400 metres this coming weekend, so I guess we'll see how much snow is left.

What are the recommendations for restaurants in the Jungfrau region? My wife and I will be exploring the whole region end of January for a week. I've read past posts on here mentioning the Brandegg restaurant is good and has good apple fritters, so we will try that. Any others?

The replacement for the First gondola at Grindelwald will run from a site opposite the railway station. There will be only one intermediate station, at Bort. Access to First from Schrekfeld will be via a new lift. No dates for completion have been announced yet.
The replacement for the old Fallboden lift above Wengen will run from its existing starting point at Wixi up to Eigergletscher. This could open as early as the 2026/27 season, subject to planning consent.

@telford_mike, regarding First new planned gondola, I reckon it won't be the railway station by Grindelwald terminal but the next one.
I am trying to get rid of the bus ride when coming from Wengen

Yes, that’s what the article says - it'll run from Fuhrenmatte which is opposite the railway station in the village, so a bus (or train) from Terminal will still be needed

Has to be a super improvement to Grindelwald, bringing Firstbahn down to the railway station.
The mainline train system will then bring skiers into the base of two gondola systems.
Eradicating the bulk of the bus movements will help air quality in Grindy as well.
Fallboden....is the bit I don't comprehend, never thought that lift would be replaced. Eigergletscher will be ridiculously busy!

I dont think its's too Eigergletscher but close to the reservoir Fallbodensee over the railway

There will.be a new chairlift in Grindel lifting skiers from Ishi to Bodmii and a new piste to the new lift station at the railway station. Huge investment in snowmaking to make it possible

@telford_mike, have you been out for a slide today? From the webcams the little that is open up in Wengen looked like it may be decent?
Snow dancing for more snow before we arrive 2 weeks today but at least it looks like getting colder so they'll be able to make more snow if nothing else.

@Rowlski, not today - still visiting the UK for a few more days. Friends who went up said it was very firm compacted artificial snow but with good coverage.

Is it a gondola now (I see the new lift to the right) - must be accessible by foot as many/most users of the cable car were on foot (many Chinese tourists - which is really weird in a ski resort)
Piste maps now grade the run out of the restaurant as black - I had thought it was red when we went 6 or 7 years ago

The new cablecars (2 of them) will be a replacement going upto Piz Gloria next year onwards. The Riggli chairlift has been there for a while. The run from Birg is a blue but can break off and do a black instead.

I remember the Riggli - so the Schilthorn is closed most of this season - was trying to work that out from the webcam
16 did not used to be black? Or 14, or 17... nor 10 off the Schilthorn. The map seems to have gone mad

The run from the top of the Schilthorn has always been graded black for as long as I can remember, maximum gradient is stated as 75% (37 degrees).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. So basically the train via the valley route. Is there any benefit to going the other way with some skiing, say via the Eiger lift?

Not really. If you're staying in Grindelwald you’re about as far away from Mürren as you can get in the Jungfrau region. Mürren is well worth a day of your holiday, but if you try to add value to the journey from Grindelwald you’ll not have time to ski it all once you get there.

Well@Badbobby, some of us who use climbing skins are really looking forward to the opportunity the closure of Schilthorn provides.
The off - piste run down the Soustal will be proper "ski touring" as there will be no lift access skiers.

Not that many slopes open today I see and annoyingly the forecast snow quantity for this weekend has been dwindling. Realistically if there's only another 10 or 20cm of snow over the next week do you think much more will open?
Always a gamble with an early booking and sure we'll have fun regardless but might still be a fairly small area available from next weekend. I thought there might be a couple more slopes open in Murren today as tends to have the best of the snow?

@rowlski with the wind that we had yesterday and the lack of snow I'm not that surprised at what has opened today. I think they are now focused on Christmas holiday for opening up a lot more. That's the time that Jungfraubahn make the money and if all "busier" pistes are low on snow because they opened them early for people then it reflects badly on the area. There's still some patches on Lauberhorn that are looking very thin on snow. Black rock (32) is hard packed with lots of little stones appearing already so a piste that would have a lot of skiers on it would be battered

They plan is to open down to Allmend next weekend
Black Rock is open today and also the blue run down from.Eigergletsher
Wixi slope is open plus the the piste from the Start Bar to KS
In fact quite a lot of skiing
Cold temps next week will help with more snow making
