Still chilly
It was sunny (er) today with a cloud veil most of the time but the temps were warmer. I think the breeze is what is making it feel a lot colder out there than it should be. For the air temps etc it really should feel warmer but also unless the full front of the sun is shining it really is feeling a little chilly.
Anyway I had to meet up with someone at the snow front first thing so needed to leave early. That meant that it was a rushed start.
My client arrived nicely on time and off we went. It was busier first thing than it had been at the same time yesterday morning and the resort feels all in all slightly busier than it was last week but generally not too bad at all! There are of course bottlenecks eg with Marmottes still broken (more on that in a moment!) Borsat at say 1030 is busy but for the most part its not too bad out there.
We did a funky variation taking in a lap of the Fresse piste (Apex are using my preferred Borsat green for SG training at the moment so its closed most mornings and the fact their gates were still tucked down the side of the piste this afternoon would suggest they'll be back on there again tomorrow morning!). After that we were off to ski a lap around Grand Pre and continue to develop some things in her skiing - bravo! She decided that taking a coffee stop to warm up would be sensible.
Lunch was back in the usual place and then I got a message to say my pm session was running a little late and the wife also, who was supposed to be having a lesson with Clare, had taken an injury so all in all the husband was running late. Ultimately we met up about 15 mins late and had a decent ski about up Bellevarde. It was a combination of piste skiing (he is in his 70's now) and taking it into some gentle off piste. The off piste has some lovely light snow at the moment - about 15cm of it - just PERFECT for intro to off piste skiing!
We had a nice pleasant afternoon before skiing down to La Daille to finish off.... it was chilly though thats for sure.
So ive got some observations and points to ponder?
- Are you a skier that can only ski fast, are you only a skier that can ski slow (for your 'challenging' level of piste i.e. if you are a green run skier answer that question from a blue run point of view)... then there are elements of your skiing / boarding that need work on. The number of times I ski 'expert' skiers flying down things like red runs because they think they are experts is amazing - in fact normally they are FAR from it. E.g. I ride the Fontaine Froide looking down on skiers on the piste... more often than not the best skiers are those able to control through every turn via 'S' turn shape their speed - keeping it consistent at a medium pace.
- When you ski around do you feel / hear your skis 'flapping' around and chattering. This is probably an indication of poor technique!
- Do your turns start 'semi' wide and 'open' before getting ever more elongated before a skid comes in to control that speed - this is probably an indication of improvements needed to make to your skiing!
- When you set off to ski are you blinkered - looking in a narrow channel down the slope ahead of you only... are you immediately setting off to 'keep up' with someone who has just headed off... then you need to think about checking around you much more. Instead taking a line of say 45 degrees across the slope / fall line would be best and improve your skiing no end.
- Do you ski in a big pack down the slope... in a random unpredictable way 'chasing' yourself / others in your group.... the chances are that most persons in the group are actually making their skiing / boarding worse not better. Instead simply space yourself out and take your time... its a sign of strength not weakness.
These are all things I see every day. For everyones moaning about it .... ski school snakes (not the snakes themselves but the pattern of turning taught) actually instill the best skiing habits and techniques and there is a reason for it... because its a sign of better skiing and boarding actually... the trajectory and turn shape is probably the single best indicator of proficiency on the slopes... not 'speed' and run colour unfortunately. I often see better skiers going slowly and making rounder turns on 'easier' terrain than faster skiers on harder slopes.... a hard pill for people to swallow but its true!
Point made perhaps.
In other news they have this evening been taking the new part for the Marmottes lift up the slopes from down here in La Daille to the lift in order to start fixing it tomorrow... no idea how long it will take to get in and get the lift going again - cant come too soon though!. Anyway it required one piste basher pushing and one pulling by the looks of things to get it up there.... hopefully it has now arrived in position!
Finally there was a 'health day' for locals today in town... lots of free things like STD screening etc happened - quite nice they lay on these days for locals!

Hello -
We are heading to val d'isere at the end of February - first time in the area.
Been skiiing/snowboarding for 25 years, mostly in Portes du Soleil with a few trips to 3V, Verb, Whistler mixed in.
Was thinking about getting a guide for classic lift accessed off-piste and side country - nothing ridiculous - sort of terrain thats inbounds bowls in canada.
Any recommendations for companies and whether a full day is required or just a half day?
Cheers
David

Thanks for this thread, have been in Tignes the last 3 weeks (with 9 days to come) and reading with interest to keep up with what is going on.
Well said @Steve Angus about controlled skiing - it's much more fun feeling the arc of proper carved S-turns than skidding down anyway. Witnessed the repeated straight line to skid stop on Fontaine Froide on Monday, then my daughter almost got hit (they ran over her skis and she fell) on Santons. She was following me 'snake' style so should have been obvious where she was going! Next time we will download Olympique which is a shame as my daughters can link parallel turns down there easily - just not at the same speed as the 'experts' you mention. Then saw another hero wipe out a racer who was stopped at the base of Grattulu this morning.
On guides, I did a full day group with Tignes Bureau des Guides yesterday and it was amazing - 11 solid off piste runs, a couple of which were over 1000 metres vertical. Even after 3 weeks of warming up it was a big day! So half day could be good too. Getting a goup together with Bureau des Guides seems tricky (unless you hire a guide to yourselves) and had another day cancelled at the last minute. But from my experience with the guides there I would highly recommend - definitely the way to get around the incredible terrain that as you say would be in-bounds double blacks/bowls in Canada.

@Taoskier, our group always used to avoid Santons like the plague. Too many idiots trying to get up to maximum speed (for the long run out at the bottom) especially just as it narrows. Would always prefer to go up the FF and down to La Daille (or even Face!) or download as you suggest.

moosepig - thanks. And yes cant believe it myself!
Dr John and holidayloverxx - I dont know what the upshot is / was - there might have been (arrests!), there could be. I dont know what happened 'after' - just have seen the photos / videos and injuries! Ill try and do some digging!
HerecomesCar - you're welcome. But I must say dont assume 'trying to keep up' will do much for your skiing... usually speed is an expression of confidence and not technique - always remember that! To many people I see have been struggling to 'keep up' much to the detriment of their skills! More often than not 'speed' is a 'testosterone fest' on the mountain!
Whitegold - sorry cant do that as you can identify some of the persons involved! One of the persons in the picture is the ski instructor trying to stop the fight too!
fterski - thank you for posting - thats the one! Pretty bonkers eh!

Sleep
I took a sleeping pill last night and boy it knocks you out.... so much so that when the alarm goes off it is really hard waking up! In fact (OK doesnt help that I seem to have a heavy cold!) I still feel as if ive been knocked sideways by a steam train in my sleep!
Anyway I was up and ready to go and got a message to say my colleague would not be skiing with the husband of my lady im teaching as he was injured so it meant I was headed to her hotel to help carry her skis as she is not the most mobile! She's a lovely lady so happy to help. So the plan today was a final lap of the green triangle and luckily the weather ended up being a lot better today than it was forecast to be! Yay! HOWEVER very interestingly the breeze was quite stiff and bearing in mind the weather system should be coming in from the west at the moment (it is trying that way anyway!) I was most surprised the wind was coming from the south of all places! Anyway it was not strong enough wind to cause problems but chilly non the less and it got stronger this afternoon!
Since it was quite chilly 'S' decided that we needed a coffee break so we stopped at the Empreiente Avalin for a warm up and hot chocs! She was very chatty so we ended up staying their far too long which meant by the time we left there was a bit of a sprint to get back to base. They had booked a table for all of us to have lunch at Gourmandine and so we enjoyed a nice chat over lunch! All very nice!
This afternoon I had a young lady on her 2nd ski holiday and here with her boyfriend - she had skied as a kid a couple of times but basically nothing since then. Her BF really loved skiing and Val in particular so he wanted her to get into it as well.... so off we went! He headed for a blast himself and I took her up to the magic carpet to see how she skied. Given how little she had skied I was most impressed so it was one of those lessons whereby it was a case of improving technique but mainly improving confidence in repeated good experiences. We ended up spending most of the time on the Madeleine and she came on great guns. By the end of the session she was nearly skiing in parallel so a really positive first session - more of the same tomorrow and it will be a trip around the green triangle for her.
This evening - well it has all gone a little nuts really.
- Firstly Olivias race tomorrow has been shifted back a day and resort change (it was already postponed from last weekend!). So now its Sunday in Les Arcs... this is because they are worried about the wind closing the lifts in La Rosiere - tbh that place is ALWAYS half shut because of the wind - never seem to have decent conditions there where there is no wind!.
- Then Clare had to as a result of the above empty the car because she is now no longer going in ski great tomorrow morning but instead leaving at lunchtime! Doh!
- Then a friend of ours arrived late (due to traffic) to stay with us for a couple of nights. She lives in Geneva and is up visiting her parents who are holidaying here for the week... she came in and literally turned around to head out for dinner with them!
- Olivia got home from school late as the bus was very late... she is obviously knackered as was in a bad mood so not ideal at all!
So there we are. Im going to watch the final of Traitors on TV then head to bed!

Last throw of the dice
I slept really well again last night - the cold is starting to work its way out of me. Yay!
Ben was skiing with club, and I was teaching and meanwhile Olivia had a much needed down day. Clare on the other hand was re-getting ready for her trip away.
It had snowed about 5cm overnight and it was looking much better out there than it was supposed to be so having done what needed doing I headed up to the meeting point for the second session with my lady. She was sprightly and on time and raring to go and being a Saturday the slopes were always going to be very quiet. So we set off up the Olympic! Now I must say I was very un-impressed with a certain ski school (you can probably guess who im talking about).... and it drives me nuts it really does - im sure you will all agree...
...so even on a Saturday there was a bit of a queue for the Olympic and said ski school used the dedicated lane for the lift ONLY reserved for kids group lessons... fine. But when said group load (about 10 small kids) and the two instructors deep in conversation allow the kids to basically sit near the door / spread out all over the place AND THEN they two themselves sit right by the entrance door meaning that effectively the cabin is 2/3 empty yet the instructors sitting where they were woman spreading themselves were blocking the entrance to let anyone else comes in - drives me nuts... just move to the back of the cabins folks - you wont lose a second on the slopes I promise!
Anyway with that rant over the good news on the lift front is that the Marmottes lift is finally now back in operation - yay!!!!
So anyway we collected our thoughts together and headed off down Verte (that top section from the Olympic really is tricky to start off when you are new to the sport!). The steep sections were fine and with that out the way all that was left was to get down the path at the top of Borsat which is never very nice but much harder when random 'good' skiers plonk themselves in random places blocking the slope... its amazing when you are beginner how much 'space' people take up when you dont feel as manoeuvrable as you otherwise could be and worse still when you are making your turns some persons set off right in your path without a care in the world - I swear the number of people that wear blinkers when they ski and board is alarming - totally clueless in their own realm not knowing how they affect others where they stop, where and when and how they start off etc! Doh!
Of course the Genepy and Grand Pre runs were great hits but all too soon we needed to get up Frontine Froide and descend Verte again as the bf had arranged to meet the Folie for lunch. I could tell legs were getting tired by then and of course that final pitch down to Folie is never the best! Poor thing. Anyway we made it and she celebrated with a glass of bubbles - good on her! I hope she had a lovely lunch and some drinks to celebrate. She did confide in me at the end that this trip (and the lessons to facilitate) were her 'make or break' as to whether she would continue skiing or not and she was excited to tell me that I had 'made it' for her. Makes me happy when I hear that!
So at lunchtime I went home, we had the racing from Kitzbuhel on and also watching the results from the U12 boys in La Rosiere coming in - unfortunately the wind really got up over there (as it ALWAYS seems to do there) and they only managed to get half the race done.... doh! Anyway the 1/2 they did get done resulted in some good results for Val... several podiums - awesome!
Clare headed off on her travels (she arrived safely this evening), our guest was out skiing and has just been out for dinner with her parents so have barely seen her today! Meanwhile Ben went to club to get his skis serviced (they do it themselves) actually and I have spent most of the rest of the day being a single Dad and getting everything set up for tomorrow.
Olivia needs to be at club at 0720 tomorrow morning to get off to Les Arcs for her race meanwhile Ben and I need to get a lift into town at 0645 for a 0700 departure to get to La Rosiere - gosh I pray the wind does not mess the day up tomorrow. Hes obviously quite nervous this evening and also missing his mum so he has been a little unsettled this evening - bless him!
Right im off to bed.

TBH my only view is the fact that every time I go (or should that be try to go!) its closed because of wind. Apart from that I dont know enough to advise either way to be honest but today it seemed pleasant enough!

Yay! Well done Olivia!
It takes quite a combination of skill, level-headedness and fortitude to make it to a high level in any sport. Even great success in early teens doesn't guarantee continued success in late teens. I've coached kids in various sports and of course the main thing is to keep it fun so they keep coming back. Some have what it take to 'make it' some just don't. But everyone can enjoy a fun session to motivate their continued participation.

@RickBoden, where are your photos, stored and how are you posting them?
When I posted from imgur (can't do now) there were various sizing options.
For me Steve's are too big (sorry Steve) as I can't see the whole pic on the screen height wise (and I am using a good size screen).
