Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Still chilly

It was sunny (er) today with a cloud veil most of the time but the temps were warmer. I think the breeze is what is making it feel a lot colder out there than it should be. For the air temps etc it really should feel warmer but also unless the full front of the sun is shining it really is feeling a little chilly.

Anyway I had to meet up with someone at the snow front first thing so needed to leave early. That meant that it was a rushed start.

My client arrived nicely on time and off we went. It was busier first thing than it had been at the same time yesterday morning and the resort feels all in all slightly busier than it was last week but generally not too bad at all! There are of course bottlenecks eg with Marmottes still broken (more on that in a moment!) Borsat at say 1030 is busy but for the most part its not too bad out there.

We did a funky variation taking in a lap of the Fresse piste (Apex are using my preferred Borsat green for SG training at the moment so its closed most mornings and the fact their gates were still tucked down the side of the piste this afternoon would suggest they'll be back on there again tomorrow morning!). After that we were off to ski a lap around Grand Pre and continue to develop some things in her skiing - bravo! She decided that taking a coffee stop to warm up would be sensible.

Lunch was back in the usual place and then I got a message to say my pm session was running a little late and the wife also, who was supposed to be having a lesson with Clare, had taken an injury so all in all the husband was running late. Ultimately we met up about 15 mins late and had a decent ski about up Bellevarde. It was a combination of piste skiing (he is in his 70's now) and taking it into some gentle off piste. The off piste has some lovely light snow at the moment - about 15cm of it - just PERFECT for intro to off piste skiing!

We had a nice pleasant afternoon before skiing down to La Daille to finish off.... it was chilly though thats for sure.

So ive got some observations and points to ponder?

- Are you a skier that can only ski fast, are you only a skier that can ski slow (for your 'challenging' level of piste i.e. if you are a green run skier answer that question from a blue run point of view)... then there are elements of your skiing / boarding that need work on. The number of times I ski 'expert' skiers flying down things like red runs because they think they are experts is amazing - in fact normally they are FAR from it. E.g. I ride the Fontaine Froide looking down on skiers on the piste... more often than not the best skiers are those able to control through every turn via 'S' turn shape their speed - keeping it consistent at a medium pace.
- When you ski around do you feel / hear your skis 'flapping' around and chattering. This is probably an indication of poor technique!
- Do your turns start 'semi' wide and 'open' before getting ever more elongated before a skid comes in to control that speed - this is probably an indication of improvements needed to make to your skiing!
- When you set off to ski are you blinkered - looking in a narrow channel down the slope ahead of you only... are you immediately setting off to 'keep up' with someone who has just headed off... then you need to think about checking around you much more. Instead taking a line of say 45 degrees across the slope / fall line would be best and improve your skiing no end.
- Do you ski in a big pack down the slope... in a random unpredictable way 'chasing' yourself / others in your group.... the chances are that most persons in the group are actually making their skiing / boarding worse not better. Instead simply space yourself out and take your time... its a sign of strength not weakness.

These are all things I see every day. For everyones moaning about it .... ski school snakes (not the snakes themselves but the pattern of turning taught) actually instill the best skiing habits and techniques and there is a reason for it... because its a sign of better skiing and boarding actually... the trajectory and turn shape is probably the single best indicator of proficiency on the slopes... not 'speed' and run colour unfortunately. I often see better skiers going slowly and making rounder turns on 'easier' terrain than faster skiers on harder slopes.... a hard pill for people to swallow but its true!

Point made perhaps.

In other news they have this evening been taking the new part for the Marmottes lift up the slopes from down here in La Daille to the lift in order to start fixing it tomorrow... no idea how long it will take to get in and get the lift going again - cant come too soon though!. Anyway it required one piste basher pushing and one pulling by the looks of things to get it up there.... hopefully it has now arrived in position!

Finally there was a 'health day' for locals today in town... lots of free things like STD screening etc happened - quite nice they lay on these days for locals!

Hello -
We are heading to val d'isere at the end of February - first time in the area.
Been skiiing/snowboarding for 25 years, mostly in Portes du Soleil with a few trips to 3V, Verb, Whistler mixed in.
Was thinking about getting a guide for classic lift accessed off-piste and side country - nothing ridiculous - sort of terrain thats inbounds bowls in canada.
Any recommendations for companies and whether a full day is required or just a half day?
Cheers

Thanks for this thread, have been in Tignes the last 3 weeks (with 9 days to come) and reading with interest to keep up with what is going on.

Well said @Steve Angus about controlled skiing - it's much more fun feeling the arc of proper carved S-turns than skidding down anyway. Witnessed the repeated straight line to skid stop on Fontaine Froide on Monday, then my daughter almost got hit (they ran over her skis and she fell) on Santons. She was following me 'snake' style so should have been obvious where she was going! Next time we will download Olympique which is a shame as my daughters can link parallel turns down there easily - just not at the same speed as the 'experts' you mention. Then saw another hero wipe out a racer who was stopped at the base of Grattulu this morning.

On guides, I did a full day group with Tignes Bureau des Guides yesterday and it was amazing - 11 solid off piste runs, a couple of which were over 1000 metres vertical. Even after 3 weeks of warming up it was a big day! So half day could be good too. Getting a goup together with Bureau des Guides seems tricky (unless you hire a guide to yourselves) and had another day cancelled at the last minute. But from my experience with the guides there I would highly recommend - definitely the way to get around the incredible terrain that as you say would be in-bounds double blacks/bowls in Canada.

@Taoskier, our group always used to avoid Santons like the plague. Too many idiots trying to get up to maximum speed (for the long run out at the bottom) especially just as it narrows. Would always prefer to go up the FF and down to La Daille (or even Face!) or download as you suggest.

Sorry folks I forgot to get a photo today - not sure how I mucked it up. I snapped one poor photo that ill post now - the so called 'instructor booking search engine website' Maisons Sport aka mainly Supreme Ski School were doing a PR drive this morning on the deck of the Sun Bar. You might be able to tell im not a fan of Maison Sport... in a nutshell they are trying to corner the market so everyone is funnelled to book via them... but the point is by adding a middle man all that will happen is that they can control the prices and gravity of booking numbers. Whilst it might feel like simplicity or whatever you want to call it but it doesnt take much effort to look around and cut the middle man out... its not like booking a holiday where there are so many components that a one stop shop of a travel agent makes things easier... the simple 'time slot' of a lesson does not need a middle man surely!

Anyway they were there doing their thing today - trying to schmooze people! Haha... I say let the product on the mountain do the talking!

It was a little hectic first thing this morning as Ben was off to friends house and Olivia was training with club - she had a flèche training race... basically trying to lower points as much as possible in the long approach to the Coq d'Or in a couple of months time.

I headed to the meet point and it was morning 3 with my lady. I decided that Solaise would be a better place to go today as the terrain would allow some better options to develop her. So off we went and boy it was lovely up there - very very quiet indeed and the snow was totally perfect. We had a fantastic morning getting her mojo on the up - it was perfect actually.

Meanwhile at Olivias race she did not have a wonderful time of it... she came out and crashed near the bottom so no time / points - oh well!

This afternoon I was back with the same team ive had for most of this week.... and today it was moguls day... when im teaching a moguls lesson im usually lapping around on the Tommeuse and today was no different - so queue plenty of laps working on everything from 'flatter' skis, to fore and aft balance and everything in-between!

It was a really successful session so bravo well done folks.

This evening with Clare back from Bourg I was doing a lot of unpacking of food as she did a huge food shop and getting the kids into bed.

Otherwise not much else to report this evening.

Whitegold - thanks.

Wowsers!!!!!

I slept really badly last night for some reason! It didnt help that I went to bed too late in the end last night! But for some reason I was awake about 5am and could not really get back to sleep - arghhhh. I double dossed on Vit C / Berocca etc this am to try and stop myself getting run down... with Clare away next week its going to be hectic on my own! Anyway I feel OK this evening but really need a good sleep. Ben has just had his hair cut by the home visiting hairdresser and then is out for a school nocturnal show (or something like that) that he really wants to go to so I dont think we will end up having a massively early night! Doh!

Anyway Olivia was off on the school bus nice and early and then with Ben making his own way to the school bus (and back) now we seem to have loads more time in the morning than we used to have - yay! I made the way to the meet point and the weather 'interesting' - it was threatening but the sun was battling to win against some cloud - in fact that battle played out all day long but NEVER really went the way of thick clouds - just a veil for most of the time!

My am session was back with the same lady ive got all week and we had lovely turns up on Solaise and the snow was just perfect - a perfect morning actually. I took lunch at my usual spot and then this afternoon I had the gent for some off pisting again this afternoon - introduction really! We found some nice strips near the piste up on Grand Pre and off Verte / Borsat etc and despite his legs getting very tired (he is 75!) we had some fun.... the only downside was he had one face plant when his skis crossed and he ended up with a small cut lip - whoops! Anyway that signalled the end of the session anyway! I was happy to be at home having a cuppa and catching the end of the cricket - not the best England - you need to be more versatile in those conditions!

In other news they are progressing well with the repair of the Marmottes lift - ive heard rumours that it could be opening sooner than we thought BUT I have NOT heard anything other than rumours about it! Its a massive job.... 4 tonnes to replace!

Im currently cooking whilst typing a nice omelette for my dinner as hopefully all those good fresh ingredients will do me good! Then hopefully I can get into bed soon!

In other news I watched the Carrick Smith documentary on YouTube last night - Beyond the Gate - its 30 mins long and WELL worth the watch... incredible family commitment and great outlooks for their future - im going to try and get Olivia to watch it sometime! And talking of ski racing - I posted a photo below of the race piste in Kitzbuhel ahead of this weekends most famous of downhills - you can see how much watering goes into making these race pistes - blimey rather them than me! And talking of Kitzbuhel you HAVE to check out the crash (in training) by the local Val d'Isere boy Ken Caillot - dont get me wrong he is not a 'favourite' to win so not likely to get the headlines but you must check out the clip of his crash - preferably the various camera angle replays too - now that was incredible that he is basically not injured! Catching your OUTSIDE edge at that speed - now that is going to hurt despite the fact that he has an 'air' suit under the cat suit! Wow!!!!!!! Dont watch it if you have a nervous disposition! He only won his first Europa Cup downhill last weekend!!!!!

Right in other news there was some ugly scenes on the slopes of Val yesterday - ive taken the pics from stills from a video I was forwarded... basically an incident involving an instructor I know (independent) getting attacked by other members of the public who were skiing with another instructor when there was some sort of crash between the various parties of 'clients' from the different instructors. I dont know the exact details but basically one man basically floored the other guy and fist punches were thrown! Ive posted some sequenced photos of the 'action'. I mean WTF is happening out there.... and especially in Val!!!!! I know the instructor concerned now has a black eye from the punch in this photo!

Right to finish today I thought id share something I have been meaning to post for a while.

My 5 most common errors I see as an instructor - fixing these 5 things WILL make you a million times better out there I promise BUT it will take self discipline over a longer period of time to sort the issue out - i.e. practice what you learn in lessons over and over again!

1) Posture, posture, posture - sounds so simple but adopting the 'ready' position somewhat more with ankles, knees and hips flexed with slightly rounded shoulders will probably make the biggest difference to your skiing - it will enable all the below to be improved too!
2) Standing forward on the outside ski - the more you get used to making active forward movements and towards the outside ski the better chance you will have of being able to ski harder slopes as well as things like moguls etc!
3) Flexing and extending - dont be a statue - you need to become 'active' and react to the forces etc
4) Rotary skills - as I talked about yesterday learn to steer and rotate the skis nice and progressively around the arc making the 'S' shaped turn. It sounds simple but DONT be the stats i.e. pushing the back of the skis around and / or not finishing the arc. It might NOT seem visually as dynamic as it could be but it really is!
5) Still upper body - apart from pole planting - the more things happen above the waist the more likely it will be to detract from your performance i.e. what your legs and thus skis are doing!

This finally leads me into one of my pet hates when I hear the phrase 'a few tips' - i.e. a lesson where the person wants a few tips to improve - normally thats a sign of thinking a 'few' quick fixes will sort things out - instead the attitude should be 'give me things ill take away and spend ages working on to change what im already doing' as sure as hell to make the breakthrough will need doubling down to change what you are doing and will NOT be fixed in a few hours unfortunately - awareness of what to change will happen in that few hours but the change will only just start to happen and will need self discipline to ingrain it into the body and muscle memory! Good luck!

Right ill finish off here and now.

Sleep

I took a sleeping pill last night and boy it knocks you out.... so much so that when the alarm goes off it is really hard waking up! In fact (OK doesnt help that I seem to have a heavy cold!) I still feel as if ive been knocked sideways by a steam train in my sleep!

Anyway I was up and ready to go and got a message to say my colleague would not be skiing with the husband of my lady im teaching as he was injured so it meant I was headed to her hotel to help carry her skis as she is not the most mobile! She's a lovely lady so happy to help. So the plan today was a final lap of the green triangle and luckily the weather ended up being a lot better today than it was forecast to be! Yay! HOWEVER very interestingly the breeze was quite stiff and bearing in mind the weather system should be coming in from the west at the moment (it is trying that way anyway!) I was most surprised the wind was coming from the south of all places! Anyway it was not strong enough wind to cause problems but chilly non the less and it got stronger this afternoon!

Since it was quite chilly 'S' decided that we needed a coffee break so we stopped at the Empreiente Avalin for a warm up and hot chocs! She was very chatty so we ended up staying their far too long which meant by the time we left there was a bit of a sprint to get back to base. They had booked a table for all of us to have lunch at Gourmandine and so we enjoyed a nice chat over lunch! All very nice!

This afternoon I had a young lady on her 2nd ski holiday and here with her boyfriend - she had skied as a kid a couple of times but basically nothing since then. Her BF really loved skiing and Val in particular so he wanted her to get into it as well.... so off we went! He headed for a blast himself and I took her up to the magic carpet to see how she skied. Given how little she had skied I was most impressed so it was one of those lessons whereby it was a case of improving technique but mainly improving confidence in repeated good experiences. We ended up spending most of the time on the Madeleine and she came on great guns. By the end of the session she was nearly skiing in parallel so a really positive first session - more of the same tomorrow and it will be a trip around the green triangle for her.

This evening - well it has all gone a little nuts really.

- Firstly Olivias race tomorrow has been shifted back a day and resort change (it was already postponed from last weekend!). So now its Sunday in Les Arcs... this is because they are worried about the wind closing the lifts in La Rosiere - tbh that place is ALWAYS half shut because of the wind - never seem to have decent conditions there where there is no wind!.
- Then Clare had to as a result of the above empty the car because she is now no longer going in ski great tomorrow morning but instead leaving at lunchtime! Doh!
- Then a friend of ours arrived late (due to traffic) to stay with us for a couple of nights. She lives in Geneva and is up visiting her parents who are holidaying here for the week... she came in and literally turned around to head out for dinner with them!
- Olivia got home from school late as the bus was very late... she is obviously knackered as was in a bad mood so not ideal at all!

So there we are. Im going to watch the final of Traitors on TV then head to bed!

Last throw of the dice

I slept really well again last night - the cold is starting to work its way out of me. Yay!

Ben was skiing with club, and I was teaching and meanwhile Olivia had a much needed down day. Clare on the other hand was re-getting ready for her trip away.

It had snowed about 5cm overnight and it was looking much better out there than it was supposed to be so having done what needed doing I headed up to the meeting point for the second session with my lady. She was sprightly and on time and raring to go and being a Saturday the slopes were always going to be very quiet. So we set off up the Olympic! Now I must say I was very un-impressed with a certain ski school (you can probably guess who im talking about).... and it drives me nuts it really does - im sure you will all agree...

...so even on a Saturday there was a bit of a queue for the Olympic and said ski school used the dedicated lane for the lift ONLY reserved for kids group lessons... fine. But when said group load (about 10 small kids) and the two instructors deep in conversation allow the kids to basically sit near the door / spread out all over the place AND THEN they two themselves sit right by the entrance door meaning that effectively the cabin is 2/3 empty yet the instructors sitting where they were woman spreading themselves were blocking the entrance to let anyone else comes in - drives me nuts... just move to the back of the cabins folks - you wont lose a second on the slopes I promise!

Anyway with that rant over the good news on the lift front is that the Marmottes lift is finally now back in operation - yay!!!!

So anyway we collected our thoughts together and headed off down Verte (that top section from the Olympic really is tricky to start off when you are new to the sport!). The steep sections were fine and with that out the way all that was left was to get down the path at the top of Borsat which is never very nice but much harder when random 'good' skiers plonk themselves in random places blocking the slope... its amazing when you are beginner how much 'space' people take up when you dont feel as manoeuvrable as you otherwise could be and worse still when you are making your turns some persons set off right in your path without a care in the world - I swear the number of people that wear blinkers when they ski and board is alarming - totally clueless in their own realm not knowing how they affect others where they stop, where and when and how they start off etc! Doh!

Of course the Genepy and Grand Pre runs were great hits but all too soon we needed to get up Frontine Froide and descend Verte again as the bf had arranged to meet the Folie for lunch. I could tell legs were getting tired by then and of course that final pitch down to Folie is never the best! Poor thing. Anyway we made it and she celebrated with a glass of bubbles - good on her! I hope she had a lovely lunch and some drinks to celebrate. She did confide in me at the end that this trip (and the lessons to facilitate) were her 'make or break' as to whether she would continue skiing or not and she was excited to tell me that I had 'made it' for her. Makes me happy when I hear that!

So at lunchtime I went home, we had the racing from Kitzbuhel on and also watching the results from the U12 boys in La Rosiere coming in - unfortunately the wind really got up over there (as it ALWAYS seems to do there) and they only managed to get half the race done.... doh! Anyway the 1/2 they did get done resulted in some good results for Val... several podiums - awesome!

Clare headed off on her travels (she arrived safely this evening), our guest was out skiing and has just been out for dinner with her parents so have barely seen her today! Meanwhile Ben went to club to get his skis serviced (they do it themselves) actually and I have spent most of the rest of the day being a single Dad and getting everything set up for tomorrow.

Olivia needs to be at club at 0720 tomorrow morning to get off to Les Arcs for her race meanwhile Ben and I need to get a lift into town at 0645 for a 0700 departure to get to La Rosiere - gosh I pray the wind does not mess the day up tomorrow. Hes obviously quite nervous this evening and also missing his mum so he has been a little unsettled this evening - bless him!

Right im off to bed.

Gendarmes are notified by I1 and I2 and finally non-European clients end their summer holiday.

Yea that corresponds with what I heard - where did you hear that from? Do you know I1 'X' - I dont know I2 instructor though as Tignesard!

@Steve A would you suggest not going to La Rosiere for a week ? Under some pressure to go somewhere else and i was thinking Les Arcs, La Plagne or La Ros but from your last few posts you dont sound too keen on it ? Could i get your overall opinion of it for a family weeks ski. Thanks

I1’s account told by school co-owner. Sounds like red mist from father “protecting” his fallen child but doesn’t entitle assault.

TBH my only view is the fact that every time I go (or should that be try to go!) its closed because of wind. Apart from that I dont know enough to advise either way to be honest but today it seemed pleasant enough!

Gonna be short

I am beyond knackered this evening.

It started about 0500 and getting the kids out the door in slightly different directions first thing was tough by 0645 fully kitted up in ski gear with lunches and kit was tricky enough!

Olivia was off to Les Arcs for her first U12 Bronze race of the season (twice postponed from La Rosiere!) and since I was on my own I had planned to support Ben at his first race.

Meanwhile Ben and I joined the coach laid on for the 40 or so kids going from Val and the handful of us parent helpers. Its a long way when you have to go all the way to Bourg since the vehicle cant cut the corner off! Worse still with 40 pumped up kids making a racket, being sick etc etc!

Of course when we arrived its the chaos of getting organised and into position and sorting the kids out. Getting packs to the rendezvous point, helping with course inspection, carrying kit etc. Its non stop and also trying to keep eyes on the results and also what was happening at Olivias race and also reporting back to family in the UK and Clare in Chatel eeek. All go.

So the weather started very nice as it did I believe in Val and clouded over and at times there were heavy snow showers. What a weird day weather wise! Quite cold too!

Anyway the long and short of it.... Olivia came 2nd overall in her race - not the first she wanted but darn good enough for a season starter! She was consistent as was actually 3rd in both runs my fractions of a second but 2nd combined over the two runs!

Meanwhile Bens 'club team race' (as they do at U10 level) resulted in Val winning but there were some good results across the board. Ben will never be a racer as such but he was decent as was mid table... go my boy! Love you!

We reversed the trip to get home and got back for a cuppa and then this evening it has been a case of getting the kids sorted for tomorrow (Olivia has a few days now of race training here in Val before her next race on Saturday - here in Val actually) and Ben ready for school. So I treated them to a Jami delivery takeaway this evening... and now ive gotten them into bed so ill be following very shortly.

No rest for the wicked as im starting a full weeks teaching tomorrow!

Sorry this week is not going to be my finest hour for writing as ill be non stop all week.

Some photos to sum the day up.

Yay! Well done Olivia!

It takes quite a combination of skill, level-headedness and fortitude to make it to a high level in any sport. Even great success in early teens doesn't guarantee continued success in late teens. I've coached kids in various sports and of course the main thing is to keep it fun so they keep coming back. Some have what it take to 'make it' some just don't. But everyone can enjoy a fun session to motivate their continued participation.

@steve - have you considered magnesium supplementation to help with your sleeping. It's help my disturbed sleep patterns a great deal.

Good luck with your tough week Steve. Please don't feel like us lurkers need daily updates!

Manic Monday idiots

Well apart from the manic start to the day - Olivia was GS training on the Raye this morning (and again tomorrow morning before a flèche race on Wednesday morning) and Ben was at school! The day end was just as hectic too culminating in me making a family curry which seems to have gone down well. If you dont hear from me in the morning then you'll know the chicken was undercooked and we are all dead!

So aside from the solo dad duties I was on the hill all day!

With about 10cm or so of blower light powder to have fallen overnight and a blanker of clouds over the resort initially I was not sure which way to go with my self taught Australian I had for the morning session! He had done a couple of lessons in Australia and that was about it and then a handful of days skiing since then - I was not sure how things would pan out as often in these situations you see some outrageous things to be honest and lethal at worst!

Anyway initially (as is always the case on days like this) the snow started just perfect to ski on but quickly gets chopped up! In all fairness he was pretty decent actually and we made some really good improvements. I showed him some slopes he might like to work on and exercises to help him develop.

However given it was peoples first day (for many) and the fresh snow it was manic out there. 'Manic Monday Idiots'.... almost as if packs just go bonkers and run riot! Never seen anything like the mindless madness as it was this morning! It does beg the question (which infuriates me) what type of person does your average person look at on the mountain and thing 'I want to emulate that' - as it seems to me that many people look at what they perceive as what they want to be and that is often a lot of rubbish - especially amongst certain (usually) younger men and women! Gosh im sounding old aren't I - haha! In many ways when so called carving skis were invented it all starting going downhill (sorry the pun) from there and seems to get worse and worse!

Anyway I took lunch at the usual place and then this afternoon had a lovely young couple from the Manchester area. It was a similar session to the morning in that they were pretty new to the sport but actually had really worked hard to get themselves quite good for such little experience and it was a pleasure to help them to the next level! Although given the choppy snow this afternoon it was tough going for them on some slopes!

So thats about for today!

P.S. One person died in a slide on the Lavachet Wall this afternoon - a group were skiing it and a 50 year old Spaniard died (he was wearing a transceiver) but it was a big slide and was buried for 30 mins! Sad!

First on the magic carpets this morning

After the initial clouds they quickly burned off this morning leaving a very nice and sunny day

It was big!

Weather battle

I think im somewhat battling to keep this cold under control as im not feeling 100% this evening... it didnt help that I am obviously over cooking it at the moment and probably the brain is not full switching off even when im sleeping as I woke in the middle of the night last night - luckily I went back to sleep but it was a disturbed nights sleep thats for sure!

Anyway all system go this am - kids out the door - Olivia more training on the Raye and Ben to school but I also needed to get the bins out and then get into town to collect x 3 off piste packs... all before 0830 - phew what a morning!

The weather was looking 'tricky' once again as it has been most of the last week. As I was explaining it is complicated out there with the low and high pressure systems battling non stop at the moment to see who will win over! One moment you think the clouds will roll in from the west and bring snow and the next minute the winds from Italy win and it pushes the weather back again! So basically its mighty complicated out there but one thing that is for sure is that as has happened this afternoon the lombard Italian winds and the retour effect take over so the temps rise with or without snow!

This morning however it was calmer and colder (well initially) and after meeting my team (ive had them off piste a few times over the years) we headed up Solaise and found some nice warm up snow in my little stash off Glacier chair. The light was threatening to come and go but I decided we could give Cugnai a go off the back! We largely had the place to ourselves and the snow, although quite choppy, was excellent and in the rock garden around the corner was very nice! A good descent and the sun was starting to win over so it was a nice descent all in all!

I decided that it would probably be sensible to not spend more then necessary lift time so Col Madeleine it was from the Madeleine chair and after the traverse out we found some really nice snow - so good we headed on down into the Cugnai valley from the other side. Lovely stuff especially as the sun was winning even more (at this point!).

A super S finished the morning off and that was surprisingly nice!

Lunch was in the usual place before I met my pm lesson! I told you the weather was playing silly bugs didnt I. At 1300 it was almost sunny and threatening to clear up totally but by about 1330 the light was really really flat and blowing a gale up top! Bonkers!

So my pm session was a nice Australian on a trip of a lifetime to come and ski some of Europes classic resorts! A solid skier but really keen to brush up on his technique as well as explore new pistes in Val. So we brushed up this and that and had good chats... he was really inquisitive to find out about not just the skiing here but also things like the history and where some lifts went etc! With the weather moving in we did eventually do some laps to La Daille which worked perfectly as he had not been down here before! Nice! A positive session!

It did get mighty warm though today and mid afternoon it was about +7 in town - ouch! Will it snow overnight or end up being clear skies - who knows! All I know is that if it stays warm and with this wind it will be tricky off piste tomorrow morning! eeek!

Ben was at judo after school, Olivia after spending the afternoon doing her homework was servicing her skis and and when everyone was home I got dinner sorted and have made the kids packed lunches for tomorrow - Ben is at kids club and Olivia training on the stade!

Right im off to have a very early night.

@Steve Angus, hope you feel properly better soon.

Does Olivia have less than normal schoolwork in the ski season? Or does she just have incredibly long days to compensate for the extra skiing? It must be pretty tiring!

@RickBoden, where are your photos, stored and how are you posting them?

When I posted from imgur (can't do now) there were various sizing options.

For me Steve's are too big (sorry Steve) as I can't see the whole pic on the screen height wise (and I am using a good size screen).
