Poster: A snowHead
|
Was having a chat a few weeks ago over a few drinkies about boarding, snow, gear and all the usual sort of stuff. Started discussing how it would be a good idea to squeeze an extra holiday in over Xmas, probably for next year.
However a rather large fly in this particular ointment is we'd have to take our wives/girlfriends along. Unfortunately they aren't exactly keen to hit the slopes and would prefer to spend the days shopping, swimming and doing all sorts of other non skiing/boarding activities. I think things like sledging or riding around on skidoos would be acceptable as well.
So s, are there any resorts where some non skiiers could have a fun filled week? Well as fun filled as possible without having some sort of dead tree attached to your feet.

The Grand Hotel in Zell am See has a nice health spa/swimming pool for guests. If the lake is frozen (you hope) there are curling and fun walks to be had, the town is nice - cafes, bars, some shops, internet cafes etc. Could get train to Salzburg for more shops and culture.
Further afield Whistler / Vancouver?
Better by far to change the wives/girlfriends for skiing versions though

Lager, do they like to shop for & buy sliding equipment then??..............leave them at home to spend what they would on the holiday in the New Year sales, you'll then have a fantastic holiday away with your mates and your wives/girlfriends will all be much happier having filled their boots with all that bargin shopping. It also means you save as well because you wont have to fork out on a holiday and shopping while there???

A few ideas :
Bad Gastein - plenty of off-slope facilities, including thermal spas, friendly service, some nice hotels, atmospheric mountain restaurants, 200km of pistes of intermediate category, excellent mountain walks for non-skier taking you into the Tauren mountains with some isolated stop-offs for lunch and snow covered fields. Can do a trip by train from the resort to Salzburg - 1 hour journey, a lot to see there, Mozart museum, garnd palaces, lake, shopping. If you require a good hotel recommndation PM me.
Also good ( but do not know from first knowledge )
Chamonix, Cortina, Innsbruck, Megeve, Kitzbuhel

Lager, sledging? have a laugh! If they dont want to go skiing I can pretty much assure you that the offer of a few walks and some skidooing will go down like a lead balloon! Christ you men have no idea! A week! You expect to keep a group of non skiing women entertained for a whole week with a toboggan?

It will come in handy for them to drag the beers back to the chalet in time for the men to return from the slopes.

Just to get the ladies interested how about suggesting La Thuile, Aosta is nearby, a very interesting old Italian town but Milan is only a few hours away , now that could be a shopping trip. Best to impound the plastic.

You know it makes sense.

Good advice David. Met a guy in Tignes last year, who used to "bribe" his wife with heavy plastic use in exchange for a 2 week trip. He got a call from his credit card company asking if he'd either mislaid, or had his card stolen. When he asked why, they explained that there had been some particularly frequent and extremely heavy usage. His retort was that he wished it had been nicked!

You need to get these people on the snow, failing which, leave 'em at home or tell them to go somewhere else. What's the point in spending a small fortune dragging them to somewhere they don't want to be to do what they could do better and cheaper elsewhere?
