Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A family snow day on Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand

If you've ever had the fun and privilege of introducing small children to snow and skiing - or are thinking of doing it - this informative article (link follows) is worth a read.

It's about a family drive (with 2- and 4-year-olds on board) up to Turoa and Whakapapa - the ski stations of Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand, which is the volcano that last erupted in 1995 and 1996.

Calmer conditions prevailed as this family enjoyed some snowballing, tobogganing and a bit of skiing. Here's a key paragraph, which certainly struck a chord from my experiences:

"It's worth keeping things simple. The children enjoyed mucking around in the snow and, while I was keen for them to try skiing, it can wait till they're older. Good gloves, hats, waterproof gear and goggles are essential, as well as plenty of snacks and drinks, even if you're not attempting anything more ambitious than a few snowballs."
The article is by Sarah Boyd, for stuff.co.nz.
