 Poster: A snowHead

Hi - My partner and I are keen skiers and are planning to get married in Vail next March. I've spoken to the Eagle County Clerk and understand how to arrange the marriage, but now we need some accommodation. We're looking for a self-catering condo that is close to the slopes, has parking and preferably some facilities e.g. a hot tub (at least). Does anyone have any suggestions? We don't want to spend a fortune as we're going from Vail to Arizona and then on to Hawaii.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Simba Run (www.simbarun.com) is relatively good value but it is a 5-minute bus ride from the slopes.

Welcome to snowHeads, Lindsay
Congratulations as well, afraid I can't help on the condo front...

Are we likely to need a car while we are in Vail? e.g. to go to other resorts or just to go to a supermarket? I need to decide whether it's best to hire one at Denver when we arrive or when we are ready to begin the journey down through Arizona. By the way, I notice that you are located in Vail ... we'd be happy to bring Marmite or anything else you can't get over there!

check out the following self catering condo hotels: Landmark, Vail21, Vailspa and the Lion Square lodge. all within walking distance of the Lionshead Gondola. all have hot tubs.
also check vrbo.com.
you don't need a car in vail - if you stay along the free shuttle route.

We visited Vail for the first time this year and whilst it is not necessary to have car whilst you are it could be useful. Everything,it being America, is pretty spread out along the Inter state. I preferred West Vail to Lionshead as a place to start up the mountain. But that is just my preference. If you have a car you do have to pay for parking and that was quite expensive but you do get to drive to some of the other resports on the pass.
I loved Vail - have a great time.
ps Check out Bull Crabs a Texas style restaurnat in East Vail - great food, great fun!

Lindsey,
The most reasonable shopping is at Safeway or City Market in West Vail, about 2 miles west of Lionshead or 3 miles west of Vail Village. The little "general store" type places in Vail Village or Lionshead are a bit pricey. Or there is a "Super Walmart" in Avon, about 9 miles west of Vail Village. To get to West Vail there is a free Town of Vail bus which runs roughly every half hour (20 minutes at peak times). To get to Avon, the bus runs roughly every 40 mins and costs $3 each way.
I know that Simba Run do allow guests to use their skier shuttle to go to West Vail to do food shopping, some other condo complexes may do the same.
To get to Beaver Creek the bus runs every 20 minutes and costs $3 each way. To get to Breckenridge or Keystone there is only one ski bus (the "Vail Resorts Express") that leaves around 9am and returns around 4pm each day and I think that costs around $10 return. To get to Copper Mtn you'd need a car - and a separate lift ticket.
If you want to see more of the area (eg a day trip down to Leadville or Aspen) a car is useful but it's not essential and it is an extra expense, although that must be weighed against the cost of a CME van transfer from Denver - unless that's included in your package.
By the way, I think almost all places have a hot tub - it's a way of life out here!
Have a great time.
