Just out of interest@jonathancarty, how does the ferry crossing cost and stack up with the Tunnel these days. I’ve not used the ferries in many years now but would consider it to cut the travel down a bit from Devon

Definitely more expensive - £600 return for 5 adults with outbound cabins. We're Club Voyage (Brittany Ferries loyalty program) members which reduces the price by 20-30% and we also get 62.40 Euros food vouchers which we invariably blow in the bar on the way out.
When I was younger with more resilience we would pick the 4 kids up from school at 3pm on Friday afternoon, drive to Folkestone for a midnight tunnel then drive through the night to resort. Generally 24hrs door to door with stops and traffic. Much cheaper even with the extra miles to Folkestone from Tavistock and we also used Tesco vouchers in the good old days when £1 of vouchers equalled £4 in Eurotunnel vouchers.
These days however I think the more relaxed approach with the extra day's skiing on the first Saturday is much more fun. It's our big holiday of the year so we make the most of it.

Looking like it could be extremely challenging for next weekend. Forecast looks like heavy rain early week and snow to lower levels Friday Saturday.
Not sure how successful landing at airports close to alps will be….
Transfer day nightmares potentially

We planned to do the Portsmouth - Caen route this year (have avoided sking at Feb HT since my school days) but this year it was the only week my son could do. Left it too late....didn't realise how popular it was...so there were no cabins available. Really didn't fancy the drive without some decent sleep so changed to a package holiday and fly out of Bristol to Salzburg early Saturday.
Best of luck everyone with mad transfer day.

Yup the weather looks like it could be interesting. We're heading down early Friday down to Annecy and then up to Val Thorens on the Saturday morning. I suspect it will be a snow arrival but thats what winter tyres are for (and chains if we really need them)

Just seen an article about a taxi driver protest 'go-slow' planned in both directions between Albertville and Moutiers on both 13 and 14 Feb so watch out! Savoie News:
"This Friday 13 and Saturday 14 February, taxis will conduct a slow-moving protest on the RN90, in both directions, between Moûtiers and Albertville, to denounce the competition deemed unfair from illegal ride-hailing services.
The Savoie taxi drivers' association is raising the alarm about the presence of hundreds of unauthorized vehicles, particularly during the tourist season, and the risks this poses to passenger safety. The professionals are calling for the implementation of a "white zone" prohibiting electronic hailing apps, as well as stricter enforcement.
Taxi drivers are now awaiting emergency meetings with authorities to find a lasting solution to what they describe as an out-of-control situation, also citing the increasing number of altercations and the need to guarantee public safety.
This mobilization comes during a busy holiday weekend, as zones A and B are on vacation. Disruptions are therefore expected on traffic in Savoie."

Leaving NE Hampshire (Guildford area) lunchtime Friday for the tunnel, wife and two kids. If all goes well we have a night booked at the IBIS Budget Troyes Est and an early start to Val Cenis. If it ends up being a nightmare as last half term was on the M25, tunnel we may drive through the night to avoid the Saturday jams we don't have Paris the same week this year which will help a little.
Good news is EES not operatorial for cars at the tunnel so saves that pain point.

Last half term for us (Hoorah!!!!) and taking a relaxed approach to the Maurienne... Saturday afternoon tunnel with an overnight at Dijon. Sunday ski at Aillons Margeriaz (because, why not?!) before heading South. Les Karrelis, and various Val's during the week before clearing off on Friday afternoon.

First timer, always said it was bound to snow due to this - midday Friday tunnel, overnight south of Dijon then battle our way to Serre Chevalier

Leaving from Yorkshire 1pm Friday, tunnel booked for 20.50 so hoping for a smooth drive and earlier slot (thinking unlikely due to car being low and wide so I'm in the less plentiful odd-sized bit of the train).
Have an overnight booked in saint quentin, had originally planned to get up early and cannonball to Les Menuires, but given the weather forecast we have booked a hotel for Saturday night in Chambery. If by some miracle the lack of zone C means it's easy going, we might lose the £80 ibis booking and go straight up, but happy to have a bail out if needed and drive up early Sunday morning like all the other years we've done this.
Have winter tyres all round but the only snow chains that fit my car are £450 so don't want to be in a situation where the gendarmes are mandating that equipment on the busy Saturday climb.

Half term
My record is the return journey- 16 hours and broadcasting on Radio 5 live when a train broke down in the tunnel
Best decision- had filled the tank just before we got to the tunnel
Fortunately we only live 30 minutes on the other side - so celebrated the epic journey with champagne at 9am in Canterbury

I hope everyone has a safe journey.
Penultimate year of Feb half term for me (possibly the last one if exams loom too large in 2027)... chains practice going well! Doing my usual of collecting daughter from college Friday afternoon, Eurotunnel evening. I will drive through the night, probably with a couple of hours nap at some point (I work nights for the few weeks before to flip my hours). I am avoiding the delight of the Tarantaise this year but swapping it for another interesting valley instead as we are going to Megeve.
We will probably ski Saturday afternoon, it's usually wonderfully quiet. We will ski the departing Saturday, drive and stay at an Ibis at Dijon/Troyes/Reims and then Eurotunnel Sunday morning. I have tried fly-drives and fly-transfers but this works out very well for us. I have an autoroute tag so daughter can just tuck into her sleeping bag and not even wake up for the tolls, and I get to choose the playlist, win-win!

Driving from Paris to La Tzoumaz this year. Collecting child from school at lunchtime and having an overnight stop in Pontarlier. Will be coming back mid-week to avoid the crowds and looking to do it in one journey.
Although the boy likes shoving the credit card into the autoroute toll machines this year we have a doofer so we will see how that goes.

Leaving Hertfordshire 13:00 Friday, Eurotunnel and driving down to Macon for overnight stop
Early start Saturday morning aiming to get into La Plagne for 9ish (traffic and weather dependent) for an all day ski
Returning the following Saturday evening (after hopefully a full day ski) overnight stop in Dijon and then Eurotunnel Sunday morning
5 up in a VW Tiguan
Works great for us normally as we get 2 extra days skiing and Saturdays which are so much quieter

Third group it seems, other families in our group are flying to Turin. We are in Chantemerle
Glad I put some decent all seasons on (3PMSF) this year, but also got some socks. Saturday should be fun, thinking of making an early break for it!

@Hurdy Just back from La Tzoumaz and the snow is much better than last year. It's also snowing today and tomorrow (11/12 Feb) and some more is forecast, so conditions should be good for your break.
Not sure where you're staying, but if you're considering renting a locker, the best ones are just by the toilets in the main Télécabine building, CHF 19 a day for a 4-person locker. Modern and heated, with a free boot sanitiser as well. More convenient than the others in the main T-Resort building (unless that's where you're staying, of course). Worth checking when you rent at the caisse to see if you can't get one 'upstairs'.
The new 208 Piguet-Galland chairlift from Esserts to Savoleyres means there are now more options for skiing the Verbier side of the Savoleyres sector. Albeit that the lower section between Carrefour and Esserts isn't operating until next year, so to come home from Vaerbbier, you still have to catch the navette from Carrefour to the Chalet d'Adrien roundabout (or go down to Médran and get the bus) and get the old gondola up from there to Savoleyres.
The swimming pool in the La Tzoumaz télécabine also seemed to be running later in the afternoon (last year it seemed to be closed, but not certain). So if you have kids it may be worth packing swimming stuff, just in case.

coming from Bern and heading to Les Gets there is an option from Thonon-les Baind / Montriond / Les Gets or going round from Geneve / Thyez etc
I know that from Geneve is a little bit longer, but there is more "highway". My main concern is that according to the weathere forecast there weill be snowfalls at Saturday.
Do you think the first option will be too risky?

@Gilbotron, early break will be a wise choice but check for the col closures before you do. The road from Grenoble can be slow as it is single carriageway almost all the way apart from some short sections. It also carries traffic for Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux-Alpes. Inforoute05 in Play Store for app

If you come from bern it would be quicker to come up through chatel imvho BUT the normal road through montriond is still closed so you would need to go up over the col which may well be snowy, its rained all day in les gets today and more forecast tomorrow, it is snowing at the top so might quite deep over the col. It was quite busy coming up last Saturday around 10.30 so early start might be good

If it was me I would do Thonon - Montriond. The valley road is not very steep.

@robs1, which road ist closed? i am trying to figure it out but without success. The route Chatel/Les Gets from Forclaz? The route Morgins/Chatel and then over the col, its a NO GO for me.
I am trying to avoid too much Snow + Snow Chains etc and it seems that so will be over 1500m At Saturday. I think i will go from Taninges...
@DJL, i know i have done it last Summer but with snow its a little bit tricky.

Its the d22 from just before les chevnoz to bioge , If you look on Google maps it shows it still closed, the route via forclaz is open but will have lots of snow i assume
