Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to La Rosiere

Another thumbs up for LeClerc Champfleury. Travelling solo I'm not bothered about eating out when stopping overnight en route, so stop off for bread etc for evening snack. Now tend to stay at Reims on return journey, so works for that also.

We've done South Yorkshire to Tignes in one go (two of us in the car splitting the driving) a few times and it's all been fine.

We've always left in the middle of the night and got a 6am ish train. The bit before it gets light in France is always a struggle so we make a point of swapping every two hours in the night regardless of whether we feel tired at that point. Once the sun is up though we never feel bad (and you're on holiday and not sat in an airport).

Going back, have done it in reverse leaving early Saturday (2am) and not overnighting but we've come to the conclusion that we'd rather split that journey (the taxing stuff is in the night and you get half way to France completely knackered).

These days we tend to finish skiing and drive up to Dijon. It's about 5 hours unless it's a blizzard so leave at 5ish and you're in bed by 11 then get a lunchtime crossing the next day (it's about 5 hours up to Calais). Best Western in Quetigny is a top tip.

Depends what time pressure you're on for being back but splitting the return journey is so much easier (and for us it's been a case of getting the same time trains but just driving the Friday night rather than sitting about being grumpy that the holiday is finished waiting to leave....then having a decent sleep and a proper breakfast in the morning).

One other thing if you're traveling on the Saturday on the way down, we often head towards Geneva then Annecy to avoid Lyon. It's maybe 20 minutes longer and a bit further but it's cruising along rather than 4 lanes of craziness on a Saturday afternoon. Route is something like A26, A39, A40,A41 and then you join the route into Chambery (we cut across to Albertville on the normal roads from Annecy last year and it was lovely but we were knackered by then and getting grumpy....with more time it would have been great).

One other thing, get a tag for the roads.

@paulhinch, Lyon is a lot better now the road around it A432 is open, no need to go near it.

Have tried the route you describe but wasn’t sold on it, personal preference only.

Yeah. We go back via the Lyon route (tend to head up to Bourg en Bresse rather than go round the the Macon road) but I always just feel like the traffic ramps up on the way down and I've been driving for about 12 hours by that point.

Geneva / Annecy feels more chilled to me, which is what I need at that point.

If I was splitting it across two days going down I'd probably sack off some of the autoroute and use the normal roads. The one down the side of Lac Annecy was absolutely stunning but we were at the point where we just wanted to get into the run up the mountains.

A couple of times I've left resort Friday afternoon to avoid Saturday and stopped overnight in Annecy. Albertville to Annecy a pleasant enough drive but too many roundabouts!

@paulhinch, makes sense, we’re usually passing early morning both ways so probably miss worst of traffic.
