@halfhand,
If I recall, Killy had retired from the World Cup years before Ski Sunday started. Still, the BBC, so shouldn't expect accuracy or fact checking.

Yes, but in the linked article, where Ed Leigh is talking about the programme, the 4th paragraph says
| Quote: |
Ski Sunday's coverage was dominated in its early years by the daring of Franz Klammer and Jean-Claude Killy, the machismo of Alberto Tomba and the aggression of Hermann Maier. |
Which is a frankly ludicrous statement, since the only one of those four who was racing in the first 9 years of Ski Sunday was Franz Klammer. Ski Sunday was first broadcast in 1978. Killy had retired 10 years before that, Klammer didn't win his first top level race until 1987, and Maier until 1997.

The W GS sounded especially icy. Some good technical commentary I thought today, not so dumbed down (except the use of “Boom!”). But why are people dressed up as bananas at WC events?
Was there was nothing about Crans other than Rast’s armband? I fast forward through the artistic skiing, of which there seemed to be disproportionately a lot. Does anyone even know what they are taking about during it?
As for “Ski social”, its just cheap footage! If I wanted youtube quality/style I’d watch it there.

@alex_heney, honestly chill out. Perhaps the early years were influenced by people discussing JCK's legacy - I doubt you remember watching the first episodes. I read the article, it's fair and informative.

Stopped watching it 3-4 years ago ... it's a pointless show for anyone who is passionate about boarding / skiing and has access to decent broadband or a TNT subscription. I have a lot of time for Chemmy Alcott but Ed Leigh is as inspiring as a rotten fence post.

I do remember the early episodes. The article was ill informed - typical current BBC output. Back when it started, Ski Sunday was very orientated on the men's downhill plus ski jumping, as that was all the BBC could afford to show. Nothing to do with any male bias, plus that is what the viewing public wanted to watch.

So was I once it dragged on. I wonder what the viewing figures are these days, with so many other options and the decision to make it a niche Ed Leigh thing for the bulk of the programme? The Times states that up to 4.5m tuned-in in the 1980’s, obviously including non skiers who just loved sport and/or seeing snowy mountains. In the 100,000’s now?
Do the generation who love half-pipe and freestyle actually watch mainstream TV?

Less artistic acrobatic rubbish next week:
11/01 Ed Leigh and Chemmy Alcott bring you high-octane action from the Austrian resort of Zauchansee, where the downhill event at the Women’s World Cup is in full swing. There are also extensive highlights of the men’s slalom racing in Adelboden, Switzerland, featuring British hopefuls Dave Ryding, Laurie Taylor and Billy Major.
Plus a chance to see skiing legend Lindsey Vonn in action for the first time after her World Cup victory in St Moritz, making her the oldest World Cup downhill winner.

Wasn't overly impressed with last night's episode, while I admire freestyle, after watching 1 or 2 runs I lose interest!

We too now watch most of our skiing on TNT via our virgin TV package......... I just wish they would do some sort of "ski show" on a Sunday evening with all the highlights, which we can enjoy after dinner with the rest of the bottle of wine

Seeing that BBC flagship Christmas Day turkey dissolver stuff like 'Call the midwife' netted 3.4m eyeballs (pair) the whole concept of comparing viewing figures for Ski Sunday is moot.
If you actually bothered to watch the freestyle events, you'd have seen probably the spec sheet for the upcoming Olympics. Now personally, stunt trench isn't my personal preference - I prefer slopestyle over pipe but I appreciate it despite never coming close to doing anything like that. I can appreciate the ski racing despite never having been on skis.
All fairness to Chemmy but Ed is probably the only reason the show is still on the air today, and we only get 5 episodes a year now so try to enjoy what we get.

I much prefer Ski Sunday to not have the racing, because I've usually watched that on TNT anyway. I don't really tune in to live freestyle events so it's nice to see something different for me.
Also I'm the opposite of Franga, I like Ed's presenting and usually a bit more annoyed by Chemmy's gurning pieces

I enjoyed it. The GS coverage was good, although I could happily watch that for an hour or two, especially the slo-mo assessment from Chemmy on edge angles etc, that's fascinating to see how skiers have very different approaches to a course once it's pointed out at 1/10th speed
I'm not a big halfpipe fan TBH, especially skiing halfpipe, but I do have to admire what they do and I did enjoy the snowboard section. I think Slopestyle is much more my thing though.
Shame it wasn't a longer program with more 'magazine' aspects; topical stuff about snowsports or locations or history.
But as 'FOC' ski telly goes, it's fine

I'm just happy this programme is still going, it's what inspired me to take up skiing in the first place, I like both presenters and enjoy seeing a bit more stuff than just ski racing (despite being a 100% skier myself). If anything I wish they'd show a bit more slopestyle or ski/boarder cross as it adds variety. I also enjoy the 'magazine' articles and enjoyed High Altitude when it used to be on.
Since winter sports moved to TNT I don't have any other access to winter sports (legally anyway...) as well as road/MTB cycling, so I'm happy that some of it is still shown on terrestrial TV

Klammer active 72 to 85 and Tomba 85 to 98.
It dates me a bit and also might explain why most Snowheads I meet ask, "Why are you called Klamm Franzer then??". They really should have some idea though!

Can we start a betting pool on how many times Chemmy says “bend the ski” this season?

I echo some of the above. I would prefer more of the social and recreational information about skiing and ski holidays. I'm pretty experienced but my OH is new to skiing and finds the information at the end interesting, the races a lot less so. Even just changing the running order may help.
