Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Aosta Valley 25-26: Pila, Cogne, Crevacol. + Courmayeur & La Thuile at a push

Just have a quick question about lift passes if anyone can help! I'm heading to Cervinia for a week followed by the Gnarlibug in Gressoney. I was looking at getting the 13 day Aosta + Zermatt pass but it doesn't look like I can buy it on the Cervinia website whereas I can on the Pila website (https://pila.skiperformance.com/en/winter/store#/en/winter/buy?skugroup_id=4436). Is it something I'd be able to buy in resort when I get to Cervinia? Or could I buy one from the Pila website and collect it in Cervinia?

I haven't done the maths, but given that usually the Aosta VAlley pass adds convenience but no real discount over buying as you go at the individual resorts, and adding Zermatt bumps up the costs significantly. I would have thought that its best to buy a Cervinia / Zermatt pass there and then a 6/7 day pass in Gressoney will be your cheapest option. absolutely no point including expensive Zermatt add on for your week in Gressoney. I believe you can add the Zermatt extension daily (before 1st uplift) to a Cervinia pass if you prefer.

Definitely don't buy on Pila website and expect to collect it anywhere other than Pila as the various resorts are different organisations / ownerships, despite having reciprocal "buy a 6 day pass here and ski 2 days elsewhere" type deals.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
I've done some calculations:

Option 1: Aosta Valley and Zermatt (13 days) = €824
Option 2: Cervinia and Zermatt (6 day) + Monterosa Freeride (7 days) = €460 + €366 ‎ = €826.00
Option 3: Cervinia (6 day) + Monterosa Freeride (7 days) = €332.50 + €366 ‎ = €698.50
Option 4: Aosta Valley (13 days) = €698

So not much in it between the first 2 options. I'll probably just go with option 2 since I won't be skiing much in any of the other resorts. I'd be tempted to go with option 3/4 and just get day upgrades for Zermatt but I'm doing a snoworks course and I'm not sure how often they'll be wanting to go over to the zermatt side.

If you bought the Aosta Valley pass, would it be possible to buy a 1 day upgrade to International?

Seems crazy to pay all that extra money for the International access unless your plan was to ski in Zermatt every day. Seems like a pretty steep price to pay for a very little added convenience. Especially when you think you might want to take a day off to nurse an injury/illness.

@JoeSchmoe, Yeah that's definitely an option but I'm not sure how much the upgrades are so that could end up being more expensive depending on how many days Snoworks want to go over there for. I'll send them a message to see what they'd recommend.

I wonder if Pila snow depth will stay at 30cm, as it has been for quite while.

Just back from a week at Pila, for those heading out there I would pack some oral rehydration sachets just in case. There is norovirus/ similar spreading at the resort which all of our group were hit with. I am not sure if one hotel is worse than others (ski instructors mentioned TH Pila) heard many others being sick in our hotel! Third year at Pila and first time stuck in bed rather than the slopes but guess the new gondola and the original sardine can one are perfect to spread germs!

This might be another reason not to buy the multi day tickets. The Monterosa website has this at the top of their page:

"ATTENTION! Strong winds are forecast for Thursday, February 12, 2026.
We DO NOT recommend purchasing ski passes online. Tickets purchased through this channel are NOT refundable. For updates on openings, we recommend checking the "real-time" status ."

If you buy a multi day pass online you might not get your $ back if the resort is too windy.

still 30 & 20 but showing 50 and 40 as latest snow falls....very hard to make that stuff up.
The size of of pile / ridge by the Coulis2 chair from the Grimod web cam is quite a good guide though...

Lucky boy! Courmayeur is right up there when there is enough snow for the off-piste routes, some of which are genuinely world class (especially with a guide). Not a good piste network, but it is a magical place otherwise!

With a least another fortnight of unsettled weather predicted for the Alps generally I'm expecting it to be epic conditions!

Another avalanche catching out those off-piste in sketchy conditions

“An avalanche occurred on the morning of Sunday, February 15, 2026, above Courmayeur, in the upper reaches of Val Veny, on the southern side of the Mont Blanc.

According to initial reporting by Corriere della Sera (Torino edition), several off-piste skiers were caught in a slide in the steep terrain known as the Canale del Ves, a well-known freeride couloir outside marked pistes.“

@ster, good grief. There are a series of notorious avalanche couloirs. I find it very hard to understand why anyone would currently want to be anywhere around there.

It seems crazy from this despatch at least. Most of us are hundreds of miles from the alps but are aware that there is a serious avalanche situtation at play, with some big name resorts completely closed in the recent past which is an unusual occurrance. Why you would go into anything more than gentle angled stuff in these conditions is beyond comprehension. I mean there were 10 avalanche deaths reported in Italy in a week *before* this recent snowfall so its not like its not getting attention.

@8611, because they are skiing gods and generally immortal, until it happens to them. But think of the stories in the bar of when I skied off piste when it was level 5.

Yes absolute madness. To be off piste was crazy, to be off piste in avalance prone couloirs was suicidal.

I saw that earlier. Similar-ish area to the fatal one referenced up thread.

I've seen a smallish avalanche from distance before in the flesh. I'm not sure I would have wanted to be that close to one, even if it was just "snow dust" by that point. I wonder how many people let go an involuntarily nervous wee as that hit them?

Skied Pila today, conditions were excellent apart from an almost inbounds avalanche that sparked a helicopter rescue of about 8 people. Stay on the piste and it’s fine.

Oh where was that, presumably above the Coulis 2 chair / red 16 you often see a lot of tracks through the powder up there.
