Off to SilverStar shortly and they’re still not open for Alpine. I did not have British Columbia not got enough snow to open in December on my bingo card for the year!
Big White has opened but only a few runs.

Revelstoke opened on Saturday, a week late. According to my son who is there they had a great day.
He's been touring over the last couple of weeks.

True. Weather will always be like that. But "climate" is about changes over rather longer time scales than "weather", and viewed from that perspective, change is real, albeit still hard to call.

@Origen, it's a hoax! Biggest hoax ever.
How else can we have had -18°C (and snow) on the first day on the hill here in Kleinwalsertal?
Was cold, biggly.

Climate also changes over years. Again. Always has always will. The Sahara was once as rich as the Amazon.

And there was once a couple of miles of ice over Glasgow. And in this context, an observation that a weather pattern which has been seen before seems to be occurring a lot more (or less) frequently, such as the one which opens this thread, is relevant and (especially to skiers) interesting. Simply sticking the head in the Saharan sand and saying that weather always does this doesn't really take the discussion any further.
Most of the planet's big past climatic changes haven't affected people except over evolutionary timescales.

It isn't just Canada, it's all of Western North America. Anybody who's open is barely open. Forecast for the next week is warm and wet. Not a good start.

I think there are cases of some of South American populations being caught out with rapid changes in climate\weather. I guess you can also say the same with the Medieval warm and cold periods. There is the argument that one of the bye products of the cold period was the plague and millions dead. Crop failures encouraging the importation of grain from the mid east along with infected rats.

What is the historical precedent for this.
How often has "Revelstoke opened on Saturday, a week late." and "it's all of Western North America. Anybody who's open is barely open. Forecast for the next week is warm and wet." happened?
Pointless having a debate about climate change, you either believe in it (the overwhelming majority) or you don't. But it would be interesting to no how much this is an outlier.

@Layne, fyi it is somewhat late this year, after a good early season last year. For more perspective: as a boy, we hoped for meaningful terrain open (in Western NA) by mid-November; as a young buck, by late November, and now as an old guy it can be the new year before places are open much beyond their snowmaking guns, which themselves weren't needed back in the day. So while we still have lots of seasonal variation from year to year, the trend is definitely warmer.

"Climate change caused by human civilization" is not a belief. We KNOW that due to the evidences in scientific papers which are based on scientific methodology. It's not like religion where you can say pretty much anything and believe without any proof.
We have a scientific consensus on this topic and data from "the real world" confirms that.

@Scooter in Seattle, cheers. I mean that's pretty much what I would have thought and my experience anecdotally skiing in France/Europe. However, the denier will always say it's too short a timeframe and just anecdotal, so can not be taken as fact of climate change (as this could be more normal over a longer timeframe). So I think the factual over the anecdotal is needed and as a long a timeframe as possible, if the deniers are to be convinced.
That said as per @matejp comment: It is unfortunately a belief in the sense that many are ignorant or unaccepting of so called "scientific consensus". It wouldn't matter if the deniers had no influence or power but one of them is PotUS.

Well I'm a scientist, but with respect that is off topic and should be dealt with in another thread.
Meanwhile the Drive BC webcams show the snow conditions pretty well:
https://www.drivebc.ca/cameras?start=null&end=null
It's snowing fairly steadily where I'm headed, but doesn't look like a bumper season start this time around.

I’m happy to discuss this further, but let’s try to keep things respectful and avoid personal attacks.
Clearly noticeable climatic change is occurring and everybody active on this website will have lived long enough to have some direct personal experience of this phenomenon. But that’s not the point. The issue is that man-made climate change was being presented and referred to as fact. But this simply isn’t true.
The presented video clips, graphs and modelling confirm this and show neither a consensus nor conclusive proof that human activity is the cause. It still remains an interesting yet unproven theory.
Now, if you know something that everybody else doesn’t then this is your opportunity to enlighten us all. Putting your feelings and beliefs aside, please show us the conclusive and scientifically valid proof that human activity (and I presume you mean fossil fuel use) is causing the average global temperatures to trend upwards.

@hudds7, nothing to discuss. If you have read what the climate scientific community say and then come out with "The issue is that man-made climate change was being presented and referred to as fact. But this simply isn’t true." then it's pointless.

May I ask.. are Sun Peaks conditions worth a visit yet/mid January. Sounds good but perhaps less than other areas and historic trends - would be looking for the glades and easy access off piste too.
