Anyone use these for finding skis off piste? Have had a few people ask and just wanted to get some real world advice.
I use leashes with rubber fuses

@skimottaret, Haven't tried, but I don't think they would transmit very well when buried. Then the cold is going to flatten the battery faster than normal, which will render it useless. They rely on proximity to an iPhone, so if you lose the ski far away somehow, like it slides off an edge, you are relying on someone with an iPhone getting close enough to pick up the signal so you can track it. They work better for monitoring luggage in airports and your car keys down the sofa because of the larger number of people in the area.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@skimottaret, Air tags work using two technologies, Bluetooth and UWB (Ultra Wide Band). Bluetooth is relatively high power operating around 2.4Ghz and UWB is extremely low power operating around 3.1 to 10.6 GHz.
2.4GHz is crap at penetrating snow. 3.1 to 10.6GHz is even worse, so I doubt this is going to be viable if the ski is more than a couple of meters away and not very far below the surface. Happy to be found wrong though.
I just use leashes. Bit of a faff, but works.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

This was always my understanding, but I just looked up the (now discontinued) Resqski finders and apparently they operate on 2.45GHz, so . I think to be useful for finding a ski would require the UWB features though, which will have worse penetration.
(I sometimes use powder ribbons and accept the ridicule)

They rely on using apple signal around them. So they wont even ping in range unless somone with an iphone. Better of with 'tracers'

Thanks guys, if you are an iPhone user and the phone is always a couple metres next to the skis seems to me should work for tumbles when the ski is under the snow fairly close. Given the resqski things used the same frequency seems logical that may be of use.. But probably needs testing, if someone is keen I am all ears for the results

I'm probably going to buy an airtag2 when they come out for our escapee dog in urban surroundings, I may buy a Chipolo One Spot to play around with in the meantime, I'll give it a go in the snow!

@KenX, cool be interesting to see if works. May be of use as waterproof stick on AirTag containers are cheap and could save a lot of searching for a lost ski
