Is this a good snow year for the Spanish Pyrenees?
I've kept an eye on it. Seems to have done OK up to January, then a big snowfall yesterday. More forecast over the next couple of days as illustrated above. Then the 9 day forecast seems positive too. All better than I was expecting, one of my worries for booking this year was 'snow reliability'. Is this a good season or does it normally run like this? Thanks.

Haven’t the Pyrenees as a whole had some very low snow winters, or wet/mild winters, in recent years? Until now.

I'm sure you can find the mean recorded snowfall but from my casual observers perspective this looks like a very good year, after a couple of very lean years

Current snowdepths today are about average in the Spanish Pyrenees, 20-50% above-average in the French Pyrenees, and 50-100% above-average in Andorra.
It's one of the best seasons for some time.

@YellowAndBlue, A friend told me that it’s already snowed as much this season as it did all last season (in Andorra). I’ve not checked that fact, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Conditions here are excellent.

Thanks. All sort of confirms what I thought.
It does also look like a stream of fronts are set up to come in and benefit the area further for the next week or (maybe) two. Not an expert on forecasting, but looks good to me.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and I appreciate the information provided by others. We've got some good value flights into Madrid. It's a bit of a drive, but really looking forward to skiing in the Spanish Pyrenees for the first time - especially as it seems we might get lucky with the conditions.

@YellowAndBlue, you could get another flight from Madrid to La Seu d'Urgell airport. I think there are two a week. That would cut down travel time considerably. There's also a high speed train from Madrid to Lleida which has bus connections to the mountains.

We went to check out Peyragudes yesterday, morning conditions were the best I've had in quite a while. Snow depth was insane, visibility was good until the clouds started rising up the valley. With that came the warmth, it was 9c at resort height in the afternoon and it was getting a tad heavy. We called it a day at 2.30pm without a lunch stop.

@hammerite, Thanks. That's very interesting, especially the train/bus options. However, on this occasion we have a 9-seat vehicle included with the flights and it was all a bit of a bargain (Saturday to Saturday, peak holiday dates). Don't mind the 6 hour drive too much, and staying in Zaragoza for a couple of nights on the way back should break up the journey. Should make for an interesting trip, and really looking forward to it. And it seems the snow continues to fall, with a lot more snow forecast over the next ten days. I think we may have got very lucky with the snow this year.

Around 6-24 inches fell in the French Pyrenees over the past couple days.
Pow was kneedeep at 2000m, today.
Wet snow down to 700m.
Looks a touch windy at altitude for the next day or two.
Another 4-6 inches sweeping in Thurs.

We were due to be on the fringes of today’s storm, but it seems we got a bit more snow in Andorra than originally forecast. The snow line was supposed to be 1,500m but we had it down to just below ALV - 1,000m.
They’re closing the main road through Soldeu tonight to trigger an avalanche just above it.

Another wave of snow arriving Thurs, Sat, and Sun.
And to low levels, at 500-1200m.
Looks windy on the weekend.

@YellowAndBlue, the amount of snow forecast (and already fallen) is pretty ridiculous. January is typically the driest month in these parts.
A few days in Zaragoza sounds good. It’s a nice place.

We usually go to Pyrenees. After some average years, this time I bought hotel and tickets to Dolomites. Who are now reporting an average year.

You going to Andorra? Nice motorway, dramatic scenery at times. The road after the motorway is frustrating sometimes but take it easy, let the Andorra plates cars do their stupid overtakes.

Meteoblue has predicted rain a few days but it hasn’t materialised yet this year. Hopefully this stays true for the next weeks

The rain forecast is only for village-ish level. There's only a small amount of rain forecast above 2,000m. Most runs in Grandvalira are above that and there's snow forecast either side of the rain too. Fingers crossed it holds like it is or actually improves to just snow.

Yup, wave after wave of snow crashing in from Sat to Weds.
Like the Pineapple Express.
Around 30-100cm in total over 5 days.
Tues looks like the day to stay indoors.
As Hammer indicates, rain below 2000m, wind above, for a day.

@Whitegold, other sites are forecasting a higher snow line at 2,100m-ish. Meteo Andorra is forecasting 1,200m. Still a few days out for next week so that could all change.

The forecasts at the moment are all over the place! I check once and the amount of snow (and wind) seems huge for these parts, a few hours later and it's been downgraded a bit, next one and it's back up again.

We’re heading over to Andorra on the 5th of Feb. I’m liking what I’m reading, so far! We’re starting off from El Tarter, but wondering if anyone recommends any particular areas of Grandvalira? We’re only skiing for a couple of days, so can’t do everything, though we are back again for another couple of days in March.

The Grau Roig sector had great vibes when I went there two years ago, but it is the other side of the area from El Tarter.

Light and fluffy, lots of it, and falling all day. Today was also very good although it being a blue bird day meant that it was quite busy. Lots of people struggling with the subsequent fresh snow mogul fields. Off piste (between the pistes) was mostly very good but with a few places with crusty/heavier snow.

@Cardo, if you ski pretty well, just go everywhere you can. It’s easy to get about. Gall de Bosc gets busy down towards Soldeu but everywhere else is usually pretty good.

The first year we went was Feb 2014 I believe, and that had a lot of snow (parked cars had close to 2 ft on the roof). I didn’t see anything like it since. Sounds impressive now!
