A bit early for any skiing, but we had a reasonable amount of snow around Andorra this morning (settled to 1,500m but some flakes down to 1,300m) with more forecast in the coming days. Fingers crossed I might get out for a tour at the weekend if this hangs about.

@Maort, that's more significant snowfall yesterday than there was most of last season (at least until the end of Feb!). It probably won't hang about for a month but fingers crossed it remains cold.

It's suddenly very cold in BCN, and lots of snow forecast for the Pyrenees, IIRC last December there was loads of snow also!

@mrvinegar, I’ve just had to wear a hat and gloves to take the dog out for a walk. It has indeed gone cold. Cannons look like they’ve been firing for a while to get a base down ahead of the forecasted snow. Arcalis is looking relatively good already.

Snow to all levels in Andorra which is unusual for this time of year and usually only happens a couple of times each winter anyway. A friend in Soldeu said she had to clear about 30cm of snow to get her car out of her garage.

As often happens, the snow came with strong winds so snow cover looks a bit patchy in more exposed places. Hopefully, the snow forecast in the next couple of days should cover those up. It's also going to turn really cold again for 4-5 days so the cannons will probably be on full whack.

Up in the ski areas it's been snowing pretty much since yesterday morning. It's still very windy so those exposed patches still look fairly bare, but there should be plenty of snow in the sheltered place. There's a bit more snow forecast Saturday evening into Sunday.
No news on an early opening anywhere in Andorra, but I understand Porte Puymorens is planning to open on Saturday.

Masella opened yesterday so they could unveil their "First ski area in the Pyrenees to open" banner. Judging by the photo it was just ski instructors there!
Arcalis opened this afternoon.
Roof bars will be put back on tonight ready for the weekend!

Felt really quite rough on Friday evening and Saturday so decided to not go out. I did today though. Really nice conditions in Arcalis. Only the top La Coma area open and the long green back to the base, but that was fine for a few hours getting some season opening turns in.
Little top up of snow forecast this week ahead of the main opening. It’ll be a busy weekend due to it being a holiday weekend.

Skied Saturday (Grandvalira) and Monday (Pal Arinsal). Snow was ok for the opening weekend. Some pistes were great. Others were marginally safe to ski! We could do with a bit more snow or the cannons on full - neither look likely this week.

We're in Barcelona for Christmas visiting the family, thinking of heading up to ski for a couple of days. Any insider info on where will be skiiable? Everytime I refresh infonieve it changes, but looks like it all depends if the weather from the east or the west wins out.

Grandvalira, Grand Tourmalet, Formigal, and Baqueira Beret currently have the most runs open.
Around 70-100km each.
Looks like the central or Eastern side of the French Pyrenees might get 6-12 inches on Mon-Tues, such as Ax 3 Domaines.

@dummy25, Andorra is very skiable at the moment. A third of Grandvalira is open with more due to open this week as more people arrive (more lifties will be starting their season too). Pal Arinsal is about half open and Arcalis 3/4s.
Some friends went out today and said it was very good. I’ll be out tomorrow to see for myself.
It’s forecast to snow on and off for a few days from tomorrow afternoon. The temperature looks to be dropping so the cannons will be running too.

Will be going to Grandvalira in the 1st week of February. For the most experienced ones, with how the slopes are looking right now, what could we expect in February?
Thanks alot!

It’s looking good. There’s a decent base down with a huge amount of snow forecast (for Andorra) this week.
I skied yesterday and it was good with quite a few more pistes open than during the week.

I didn’t get out today but we had about 15cm down where I am. The lad is based in Pas and he said there was somewhere between boot and knee high snow everywhere (and he’s 195cm tall). Very little wind whilst it was falling meaning there’s a good covering everywhere. It was all light and fluffy stuff too. All quite unusual for Andorra in recent times.
More forecast over the next 4-5/days too.

Delighted to read this. We are on a 6am flight out of LHR to BCN today. Will have a relaxed drive in and aim to arrive in Soldeu just after 3pm. First timers to Andorra!

Pyrenees and Andorra currently have the best snow conditions in Western Europe.
Place to be for Xmas week.
Around 12-24 inches at 1500m in the French Pyrenees.

@Whitegold, tell that to Mondole in Italy's Piedmont, sitting on over a metre of fresh with the same to come again this week. (Though I would take the point that it might be just a smidgen too much.)

but finished it with this.
First impressions of Andorra are excellent so far. Customer service has been incredible all day long. We are very excited to check out the skiing tomorrow.
We are looking for recommendations of places to eat on Christmas Day, if anyone has any.

@Owlette, Lunch or evening? If lunch, Pessons or Solanelles restaurant up the mountain. I’d be tempted by Pas de la Casa. There are a number of good restaurants piste side. One of my favourites is called La Camarguaise. It’s not fancy but it’s good quality/value.
If evening, I’m not sure. I’ve only really eaten in Soldeu out of season. You’ll struggle to get a traditional British Christmas lunch. Maybe Fat Albert’s if they have room.
@Whitegold, I went out today and I was a little disappointed if I’m honest. Considering how much snow we’ve had down low (20cm down where I live, way below any ski areas), there were a surprising number of stones and thin patches. On quite a few pistes the snow cannons are on all the time leading to some very firm frozen patches with flat light it’s difficult to work out what’s nice and fluffy and what isn’t! Don’t get me wrong, this is a big improvement on last Christmas but with all the snow I was expecting it to be better.

Headed over to Pas/Grau today. Tried some skiing between the trees - very heavy going. Some open off piste faces were much nicer to ski. Pistes seem better over there. There are a bunch that look perfect, have been pisted but not open yet, skied one and it was indeed very good.
