Is it really bad that having spent the last 3 weeks really hoping for snow that now I want it to stop (by Saturday) so we have 6 days of lovely days next week?! The forecasts seem to suggest more coming next week, but I'm really hoping that comes in the evenings/nights as I'm not a fan of skiing in the falling snow!

I fell over on ice in a car park the other day and have pulled something in my shoulder so decided that the risk of falling in awful conditions wasn’t worth the pain. Glad we stayed in as it snowed quite heavily in Corvara today, warmer and wetter than the other day.
From ca 2-3 the police were pulling over some cars heading to Arabba and making them either put on snow chains or turn around.
We now know the answer to the question how long does it take 6 people to put snow chains on a BMW estate? answer at least 30 minutes. I’m not sure if they actually gave up and just waited for the road to fully reopen!

Back in Badia now, great day doing the SR by car, legs feel much better for it and looking forward to skiing tomorrow.
Didn’t even come close to needing chains, all seasons and Golf 4Motion are spot on. A policeman in Corvara checked the tyres at one point but seemed satisfied and let me go.
Arabba looks to be the place to be snow wise, could hardly see the roundabout in the centre, people skiing down the road etc. Colfosco and Corvara still fairly snowy but very wet snow. When it freezes tonight and the piste bashers do their stuff it’s going to be great in the morning - though more snow is forecast overnight so might be powder on piste. By the looks of it most of the Dolomites have got a really good covering over the last few days with probably more to come.

Same here, after checking the snow reports frantically hoping for snow I’m now hoping it does stop at some point next week! Arrive Corvara Saturday.

Really lovely conditions Monday and Tuesday since the 20-30cm of snow on Sunday - and it has stayed very cold and mostly clear skies .
Got a bit bumpy in places after lunch (or even before lunch on some well trafficked runs). My wife does not like moguls.
So we are tending to get up and out first lift , coffee stop at 10 and lunch at 12 before quitting while we are ahead .
Did a nice walk from la villa to san Cassiano and back this afternoon.
Busier than I had hoped it would be (is there ever a quiet week now in Alta Badia?) but you can still occasionally find some runs and chairlifts to yourself . I wonder if thanks to the snowfall, skiers within a few hours drive decided to take a last minute break …?
More snow due over the next few days ! |
I’ve been told by Alps hoteliers, they would know, that quiet/‘mid-season’ January’s are now a thing of the past. The watershed was the pandemic, since 2022 skiers/boarders from across Europe now put a bigger than ever premium on leisure and sports holidays. Without a new snow dump in sight at that stage, we tried to add a room in early January for our third week of January in Colfosco Hotel stay …. turned out not a chance.

There’s been another 10cm or so overnight in Badia at 1350m. Still very cloudy and snowing lightly halfway up La Crusc, it’s not very cold but the heated seats in the new gondola are very welcome!

Above freezing in Corvara village, warmest we’ve had since we arrived in Italy 3 weeks ago but cold later when the sky cleared. Low cloud all morning, we can see all of the Col Alto gondola from our apartment and even the bottom was in cloud.
Pistes very choppy as it snowed steadily but lightly overnight. Reckon we’ve had at least 45 cm of snow in Corvara village since Saturday evening.
Brightened up about 2pm and was lovely for a few hours if you didn’t mind soft bumps on anything with an angle. The notoriously blue below Pralongia 2 lift was by far the worst we’ve seen it this year, just bumps, no soft in them
Pistes should improve over the next few days, my instructor reckons 4 days and they’ll be perfect like last week, shame more snow forecast in 4 or 5 days
Looks beautiful though, what a difference a week makes. Looking forward to tomorrow as forecast is blue skies.
This was taken from Maserati chairlift this pm, it was all brown last Friday.

For those wanting to follow the webcams in the Dolomites, I have hacked a small site together that integrates all* webcams from a large ski area into a single viewer. I added Dolomiti Superski over the last few days, with 148 webcams and a map: https://snow.obsession.cam/dolomiti-ss . Works OK on Android as well (in landscape). Suggestions for improvements welcome.
* The focus is on the really nice quality modern cameras - I might not have older / low-res cameras where resorts have these. Feel free to submit missing cams via the site.

OMG that blue was absolutely awful, particularly when the lift stopped working for a bit. We ended up doing it twice yesterday. It made the slopes back to Dantecepies look almost flat!
But it was a lovely day once it cleared. Off to Colfosco today as it’s going to be sunny then a bimble around Corvara before packing.

I was really hoping to do the Grande Guerra anti-clockwise loop somewhen next week, hoping there will be enough snow. Now, some lifts are closed due to avalanche danger. This will be my first time in the region - from the experience of you guys, is this sth temporary, or will the lifts be closed for a longer time? How was it in previous years?

I struggled on my mobile too but a 4k desktop monitor brings it to life. Now I understand the navigation better I'd find it easier on the mobile now but it is made for a bigger screen to get the most out of it. The big buttons to the right that list the area are not actually working links - not sure if this is intentional or not, but it would be better if you could select and area rather than scrolling down the left hand list (@sheffskibod?). I always struggle finding Arabba on any map!

Thanks for the feedback! The way I deal with making it navigatable on mobile is to go full screen when you stab one of the links. Unfortunately apple mobile browsers don't support this. If you have Chrome, it should work. Here's how it should look in landscape:
Alternatively, you could try sharing the site to your phone home screen, where it will look like an app. That might open it a bit more full screen.
The mobile usage is a bit of an afterthought and I find the paraphernalia onscreen in the viewing area on the right tend to get in the way a LOT. It might be possible for me to zoom it out a bit on mobile, I'll look into that if there's interest - a superficial experiment just now suggested that this will require some experimentation.
