Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well, it's been quite a mild Autumn so far, but it must be time to start a weather thread in anticipation of the winter season in our favourite part of the world snowHead

It seems we might get some flurries at altitude (above 2500m) after the weekend:

https://meteo.arpa.veneto.it/?page=DM&lang=it

https://meteo.arpa.veneto.it/?page=DM&lang=en

You can keep an eye on the forecasts and webcams here, it has a great facility lets you look back at images saved at various times over the preceding days:

https://www.bergfex.com/arabba/webcams

Please feel free to add your favourite links and observations...eventually some live reports maybe! snowHead

Ouch! I remember paying around £90 for a week's Val Gardena pass on my first ski trip in 1999...probably a couple of hundred thousand Lira at the time! Cool

Italy did seem cheaper with the Lira even though the prices had all those zeros! Shocked Laughing

Very fancy! I might take a ride in January!

I like how it goes further onto the mountain than the old one, almost as far as Rifugio des Alpes. Mind you, that walk did stagger the arrival of 125 skiers onto the piste.

The new one has multiple 30-person cabins, so even though the capacity is nearly doubled, crowding shouldn't be a big issue.

I wonder what will happen to the old base station?

It depends which resort or ski area you are visiting, Verona is good for Val Gardena, Val di Fassa or Madonna di Campiglio. Innsbruck for Kronplatz, Alta Badia or Val Gardena. Venice Marco Polo or Venice Treviso for Arabba or Cortina d'Ampezzo....just because these transfer routes would avoid having to cross high passes which can be prone to closure after heavy snowfall.

There are flights into Bolzano from LGW with SkyAlps, but they are pricey. https://www.skyalps.com/en/

Further afield, there is the Milan trio of Bergamo, Linate & Malpensa, Trieste, Bologna??, even Munich for transatlantic arrivals. These would have to be a lot cheaper to make sense and you would probably need to hire a car for transfers.

No WC Slalom in Val Gardena, it's SuperG and Downhill! Puzzled

https://www.val-gardena.com/en/winter/top-events/fis-ski-world-cup-val-gardena/

For Val Gardena, flights into Innsbruck or Verona are best from London, unless you can afford the SkyAlps into Bolzano.

What sort of transfer are you looking for? Private taxi, public transport, car hire?

Haha, horse's head heading to your pillow now! Laughing

We did discuss the Olympic impact on another thread. I think the conclusion was negligible impact, unless you were trying to visit the host cities (Milan, Verona) or the host resorts (Livigno, Bormio, Cortina, Val di Fiemme, Anterselva) around the competition dates.

I did find January availability a bit tighter this year, so maybe some have shifted their dates to avoid it all together.

Which Milan airport? There are 3...Malpensa, Linate & Bergamo...and all have direct flights from DUB.

Bergamo is the nearest of those three to the Dolomites, but even that isn't exactly 'close by'.

Verona, Venice & Innsbruck are closer, but still a 2-3 hour transfer depending on resort.

I'm not that clued up about transfer buses, I always rent a car as there's a few of us. The good thing is car hire is relatively cheap in N Italy in winter, from £70 a week for a small car, from £100 for a compact.

There are buses from Venice up to Cortina and Arabba and I think from Verona up to Canazei & Campitello in Val di Fassa. For Val Gardena resorts you can do trains from Innsbruck or Verona to Bolzano or Ponte Gardena, then a bus up the valley.

How do you find such low car rental rates ? I am looking all over the place and the best I can find for midsize SUV is $900 for two weeks in early March (or $550 for "compact" class Fiat 500x or similar)

I would need vehicle that can fit 175cm skis inside. Usually I take train/transfer to/from Bolzano but this time I would have to go back to Venice to pick up my spouse so I figured renting a vehicle would be a better option.

I'm looking on Skyscanner.net to find prices. I generally book with consolidators AutoEurope, Holiday Autos, Opodo, Expedia as they offer free cancellation. Never direct with the supplier. The cheaper suppliers tend to be local, but often in winter the price of the majors comes down as you get closer to the dates, so as long as you have free cancellation you can swap deals.

SUVs start around £150 for the week in Jan that I'm going, but we don't mind driving smaller cars in Europe! Laughing

Which dates are you?

Maybe you can only access prices for the US majors, Budget is showing £340 for a small SUV.

@Rje66, done a bunch of short Dolomite trips ex Dublin, best airport for the Sella Ronda resorts is Venice, just under 2 hours to Cortina or Arraba or Passo San Pellegrino

Verona has fewer flights unfortunately. Milan airports are a bit far from the Sella Ronda resorts, over 3 hours, of them Bergamo the best option as its further East and has the most and cheapest flights. You can go to the Brenva Dolomites from Bergamo, ie Passo Del Tonale (2 hours) and Madonna Di Campiglio (a little more) but Tonale certainly not as beautiful as the Sella Ronda resorts, not been to Madonna yet.

Venice and Bergamo flights also usually well timed for efficient short breaks, ie, fly out in the evening (don't miss too much work / school that day) and fly back late at night (ski the whole last day of your trip)
