@EGP01, on the whole, I'd say the "red" runs are much more like firm French blues. And immaculately groomed.
The only real red run crux (a section now re-marked I think as black) is the run from Sarezza at the top of Champoluc down to the Belvedere chair which has one narrowish corner that can get a bit scraped and clogged with the nervous.
The black runs down to Staffal are probably best avoided, as is the black run into the Alagna bowl. Not that challenging as black runs go, but some almost steep sections. |
I think you are understating the grip factor of the blacks in Monterosa.
Absolutely the runs are marked up overall in Monterosa and I agree with your comparison of the reds to French blues but that is the thing to remember since it is very easy to be lulled into a false sense of security by that thought.
The blacks are, on the top pitches, steep not "almost" but steep... as to how long they are sustained might better explain the sniffiness of your dismissal.
The gooses ars* as I refer to the Sarezza canyon is for me never to be underestimated as is usually polished to high gleam and/or covered in pee-panted soft skittles which does raise the heart rate after a good lunch in one or another of champers fine piste side dining establishments. (although watching a while at the turn does provide good entertainment on a busy day)
Same can be said of Olen on the top couple of pitches until it opens up just below Giacetti, both of these blacks are the only piste access or return to the adjacent valleys and given both run under cliffs that tend to keep the sun off the pistes tend to get polished pretty quickly.
You don't go to MonteRosa to pin the Kandahar although the Leo at Weissmatten can provide thrills of that nature on the rare occasions that it open nowadays.

Anyone there just now ? Are the conditions good after recent snowfall .? It’s a new resort for us. No absolute beginners but a few children with us too. They will have private lessons. Any suggestions for day one getting to know the area. We will start off in Staffal.

If you’re on your own then head up to top of Col D’olen. Lap the blue a bit to warm up down to Cimalegna. Then ski all the way down to join them.
The black down to Staffal is quite tame (imo).
With the kids you can lap the red down to Sant Anna from Bettaforce via the fun slope that starts just as you get off the chair lift.

Just back this Sunday. Day one up the gondola to Gabiet and then the 3 man chair and the blues, for the beginners. Everybody else up to Salati and Algna one way and then Saint Anna and Bettaforca the other, followed on to Champoluc. Go to Novez for lunch, excellent.

If you buy the skipass for the whole week, exclusive the Indren Funifor.
Is it possible to buy an extension for one day? |
You can buy it at the Indren lift daily, I think it's about 8 euros.
Re the Indren lift, there only is 1 itinerary down from there, which has the occasional marker post. The rest is fairly serious off piste either to the right or left, not marked not patrolled. The itinerary itself is steeper than a black and can have large moguls, that section is not obvious from the start, and is a couloir with rocks at either side. Harder than the Swiss wall for a guideline. In Italy you need equipment for off piste, and the carabinieri will check, especially if you have no rucksack. Large fines.

Great find, and yes that's it, not many poles so requires care in poor vis. Top is easy so don't be lulled in...I will be there from Sunday so will update if the Indren opens.

100%. I'll be there in a little over a month. I'd like to try it for sure if the conditions are right. Where does that run end up? The Alagna side or Gressoney side? How far from the lift are you when it ends?

Big Family trip to Alagna in Half Term. We have my non skiing parents in their late 70s with us.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in theory possible to use the lift system to get up from Alagna and down to Gabiet and potentially up the chair and walk to refugio Gabiet. And also get down to Staffal on the Gondola - I suppose is doable.
cheers

In theory yes (as all Gondola's / cable cars except*) but probably not the *chair up to Lago/ Rifuio Gabiet, but there are a couple of other huts/restaurants accessible on foot if they are reasonably mobile and well shod from Gabiet.
Also from Stafal its another cable car to Sant Anna & a restaurant.
I doubt they do a pedestrian ticket though so will likely be the cost of a full day pass to do that.

Considering coming out Monday a week from today. How does the off piste seem?

None of our party trying off piste but spoke to instructor this morning who has confirmed it is good right now and after expected snow tomorrow Thursday is very promising.
Today a bit more cloudy with perfectly pisted wide reds. What more could you ask for ? Coffee & lunch spots pretty spot on too.
