Starting the thread for this year. Can't wait for more snow fun times.
Any recommendations of private ski instructors in the area? I'd like someone to focus on drilling one or two things well over a day or two (not the usual here's a bit of everything)
Most of my experience with lessons, both private and groups hasn't been great (i get more from a YouTube tutorial), but the rare instructor that gives personalised feedback (ideally records you and shows you) and gives you the same drill over and over again until you get it is priceless, so looking for recommendations.

@wimpytwo, which area? Not particularly efficient booking someone based in e.g. Alagna if you're staying in e.g. Champoluc ...
I'd have thought any instructor would do as you ask? Although I would tend to favour the, errr, younger end of the spectrum.

I'll be in the Champoluc valley (happy traveling through the valleys, but yeah ideally not in Alagna unless happy to meet at Passo Salati). You'd have thought going private I could get what I'm after, but last couple of attempts were really disappointing so was hoping for a recommendation

@wimpytwo, what are you looking to work on, out of nosiness? I can recommend an excellent Champoluc instructor for young kids … haha

I want to work on improving my lateral and rotational separation. I can do drills by myself without an instructor, but I feel it would be helpful to get some instructor feedback, to make sure I'm doing it right & not developing bad habits / bad form.
I'm also working on learning to ski on one ski only, but this one I feel I can do on my own.

To what end? I see kids' race clubs doing it from time to time, but never understood exactly what they were trying to achieve. It's never been a part of te BASI system, so I don't have any experience of it.
I mean, I've done it, couple of time when a ski's got lost, but it's not what I'd consider an essential skill. And we do occasionally lift one ski off the snow, when teaching; e.g. sometimes students struggle to get their balance equal and this can help, but that's at a very basic level, and it's only for a second or three, different thing altogether.

We have 1 ski carving with IASI for the L3 tech, but just on the outside ski while lifting the inside ski. A good drill for outside ski balance.
I'm also in the camp of don't really see the point in pure 1 ski skiing. There's never really a situation you'd actually need it as a skill.

One ski skiing: partly because I've now seen two people break one ski while touring/far from the resort. I hope it never happens to me, but just in case, seems like a good skill to have to get down the mountain. One of these was a friend. The other was an UCPA instructor who skied on one ski much better than I ski on two.
Partly because i saw a few carving improver videos that recommended it (specially to learn to use the outside edge). Not sure how helpful it will be / if it will do anything to improve my carving. But giving it a try!

@wimpytwo, I don't think you need an instructor to "teach" skiing on one ski. It's just a question of balance.

Given that the ski school (there is only one) in Champoluc is quite race-oriented, any instructor ought to be able to focus in on this. Although, it has to be said, that they may (quite rightly) have their own opinions on what you need to work on ...

Basing myself in Gressoney St Jean for 4 days skiing with 5 mates in mid Feb. Champoluc accommodation was on the expensive side and Gressoney La Trinite too quiet. I've skied Monterosa twice before but not stayed in St Jean. It seems to have a few bars and restaurants. Any recommendations? The snow base seems like it should be even better in a week's time so hoping for good conditions.

Just back from a couple of sneaky days. Pistes mostly all open yesterday, a few more than on Friday. Friday way lovely with almost no-one there. Yesterday, being a holiday weekend was rather busy. Factory snow pretty much only but excellently manicured.
Tip top late lunch yesterday in Novez with some excellent Nebbiolos.

Looking forward to my first trip to monterosa, staying in one of the hotels up the first lift in crest. Thinking of spending our last day at cervinia, can you add on zermatt to the monterosa pass?

@lyricproofvest, We did this once. We just turned up in Cervinia and went to the lift pass office to sort out the Zermatt extension, and it took *ages*. Apparently we were meant to talk to the Monterosa lift pass people the day before to arrange it . If there's a lift pass office in Crest it might be worth popping in and asking them.

It includes a day at Cervinia, but not the international extension of Cervinia to Zermatt. that was probably the troubling bit i.e. much harder to add to an Aosta valley resort pass that wasnt issued at Cevinia / Valtournenche
Daughter arrived in Frachey yesterday, said pistes were perfect today after the recent top up of snow.

Looking forward to our trip end of January. Watching the web cams and looking promising. We will be based up in Stafal.
A big family group. I will be on granny duty. Does anyone know how easy or difficult it is to get bus down to the next village with a push chair. ?

Thank you. I am hoping to join some of our family for coffee/ lunch on the mountain. I m thinking the Sant Anna cable car my best bet. Do you know of any other places with foot / pram access …?

If you ride the Staffal lift up to the Gabiet station there are a couple of Refuge/tavernas up touring trails, there were families who had walked up there (probably need micro spikes and baby carrier/sled rather than buggy) possibly the one closest to the lift was a bit drinky (ByMonta Rosa Standards) but the second, higher one was full of families with members on both extremes of the age spectrum and really good value in terms of quality and price. There is a cafe on the Santa Anna side which is handy for the cable car but I didnt go in.
Gressoney la trinity has some nice old buildings, church and museum, a couple of shops and a few restaraunts/cafes but feels more like a farmstead that has been overun than a village as such. I didnt visit G. St JEan.

That’s great info. Thanks so much. Our group definitely falls into both extremes of the age spectrum. Youngest will be 8 months and oldest having a celebration ski having achieved 80 this year. The rest are all ages in between.

The buses were regular and ran to timetable. They had a better time table in the peak weeks vs normal. It is stuck on the bus stops. La Trinity was pleasant to stroll around but I echo the farmstead references. Some nice restaurants though but we had to book in advance in Feb.

Hi all,
looking forward to a week skiing in Monterosa, starting Jan 3rd.
As the forecast is showing no new snow until then, would it be worth buying the Freeride ski pass? I see that most itineraries on the ski-map are closed, I assume because of lack of snow
Would appreciate a lot an update of current situation from someone who is already in the area.
Will be staying in Frachey and would appreciate a lot, also, some good restaurants recommendations (expect them to be in Champoluc, at the end towards Frachey).
Thank you in advance!

Are you joking, closed for lack of snow
If closed, then because of Avalanche clearing after more than a metre of snow in 36 hours.
Yesterday afternoon Gabiet already was at 80 cm fresh, and it has continued till early this morning.

@Onnem, looks amazing.
@maverick, Itineraries? Which would they be?
La Grange by the Frachey funicular seems OK, several changes of ownership since we were last there.
In Champoluc, Le Sapin is always excellent. Take cash. Also excellent are l'Essentiel d'Andreone and the Bistro Breithorn. The Sans Souci does nice beers and burgers.
On the mountain, Novez, just above the Crest gondola is exceptional.

@maverick, they're not itineraries. They're skinning tracks. I.e. for going uphill ...
The "Freeride pass" only adds the Punta Indren lift. I'm not at all sure that there's enough snow yet to open it. Certainly it's not open this morning (nor is the home run to Alagna).
