Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My ex sister in law who is French and lives in Grenoble but no longer has a car has hired a car to bring her daughter and granddaughter (my niece & daughter) from Grenoble airport to here, and we've agreed that via Gap is the best option as hire car does not have winter tyres and only socks, so as Lautaret will still be snow bound that's the best route, it's going to be an interesting week !!!

We have winter tyres and socks, so think she should be able to get through if it opens, but if not probably go via Frejus. Concern traffic via Gap could make it a long detour?

@Gilbotron, depends where you're coming from, as they're leaving Grenoble then GAP is best alternative plus theyll know how to avoid some of the Grenoble traffic hopefully rather than slap up to Frejus which will be busy anyway, this Saturday will be bonkers busy anyway.

Looks like we had another couple of cms overnight?

And think I've just worked out why the parking at InterMarche is busy and yet supermarket was calm, maybe people leaving their cars there rather than get snowbound further up the valley?

And eastbound traffic is already significantly backed up on the A43 motorway, so for those heading there it looks like the Grenoble-Gap route is the way to go for now. Possibly going via central Lyon, Vienne and St Jean de Bournay to avoid all the mess on the A43 around Bourgoin.

Thinking of Serre Che for the week starting 28Feb. It’s the only week that works for my son but I noticed that this is the second week for French zone C (Paris) holidays. How much does this affect the slopes, i.e. will the ski area be crazy busy, or just busy? Also the option I have found is to stay in Briancon, happy with that as a location for accessing all the piste areas but is the Prorel gondola queue likely to be a problem first thing for getting started.

@BRG, it should be less busy as there will only be Zone C, all the rest will have completed their holidays. Use the &joy option when you buy lift passes to skip the main queue.

@Hells Bells, thanks for the reply , I hoped that it would be less busy with only one Zone on holiday. I looked at &joy and I also looked at using the line 6 bus for getting up the valley in the mornings which looks like another good option for getting around the whole area if we stay in Briancon.

Today was shocked on that there was quite a queue at Monetier and that was in the NJoy line Shocked

That's a first so word is getting out, though yesterday was alright, but maybe people starting their week today?

Had a good pow thrash up there for 90 mins or so tearing the legs off my niece and then back to take her daughter to ski school at Noon then down to Briançon to Decathlon and Intersport then back to Pointillas for the lesson end, then we'll have lunch at Chalet du Lac again as we've booked everyday which seems to be a good plan for the young one to get the calories back in Laughing

Waist deep in the trees today, untracked 100m from the resort…… really quiet on the hill. People just don’t seem to want to go out when it’s snowing here. Really great day lapping my favourite tree runs.

Looks like a good day tomorrow too. snowHead

It just doesn't stop snowing, and also quite windy, hence the Col is closed.

Still some top lifts closed, think Yret hasn't opened for five days now, as well as the Mea drag.

They're not opening at 08:30 currently due to the conditions.

We're doing first lifts but skiing en famille with the little one as she skied all the way down yesterday on the Frejus Chemin and wants to do it again before her lesson.

With this snowpack it's piste or side piste and the trees and they're controlling the lifts as to what more suspect terrain can be accessed.

And next week looks like the start of Spring maybe, which I have to say I'll almost be relieved at the prospect, if only as the terrace is getting harder to clear the snow off !!!

Wow it hasn't snowed overnight Very Happy

So we skied en famille with the little one, and then dropped Mami and her off at the cafe and whilst we went up the drag which then turned into 4 laps and I could not belive it was still untracked at 10:30, as @rogg, says and we've commented on before families don't like skiing the trees.

Coming back down into the valley I was doing my own thing and hit a bank of intense cloud, which ruled out making the most of my line over the terraces Sad

My niece on my 15 yr old board took my advice of "speed is your friend" and was ripping by the second lap.

Looks like more snow tomorrow Very Happy

It works really well. Someone else had asked about it in another thread.

It probably makes sense to use it to charge up a ski pass (think they have uncharged ones at the gondolas). But the phone app (which uses Bluetooth so it doesn’t have to come out of your pocket) works really well by itself

@Hells Bells, I'm not surprised, we were not impressed by the &Joy queue at CDB yesterday for first lifts.

Trouble is looked like the main queue was moving faster as the &Joy is only one line!

Normal service resumed this morning at Pointless as we arrived early and the queue was not as bad, but we were at the front.

Scored a superb BlueBird morning for around 45mins and untracked, even Gauthier, where I think we did four or so runs then afterwards a couple of hikes, but I broke my niece, but she's riding so well Cool

Though, every time I videoed her, she stacked it most impressively Laughing

Another fun day. Today my boss shared a couple of his secret ‘lunchtime laps’. Shaded tree areas where the snow is still really nice, especially compared with the snow way higher but exposed to the sun…..

Col du Lauteret is open at the moment , but route is closed tomorrow from the border of Hautes-Alpes with Isere due to avalanche risk at Les Freaux (below La Grave) from 11am to 5pm. That should cause some chaos.

Twas a crazy day yesterday and really thought at one point could be in the deep mire as wind kicked in big time all of a sudden.

Gauthier was running and there were the usual gusts and I decided to take niece, OH and daughter off where we'd been day before but once there I didn't like the look of things and thought best strategy to ski down to the piste but wind kicked in to insane levels and didn't let up, so guided them down to the gazex control hut, which I thought if conditions become really bad could sit it out there and would be a solid reference point should it get serious etc

Wind did ease a little along with viz and then with some long traverses we escaped, by which time they'd closed the lift!

Lower down snow was getting heavy and one pitch I thought would be sweet was horrendous and then back at Pointless queue was across the car park but NJoy was empty and some Dutch in our gondola said they'd waited 45mins!

Back up there my niece and I lapped Pikeys shoulder 4x whilst OH and daughter sat it out at the Alpage and snow became progressively heavier but was fine for the board.

Little one had her last lesson and got her flocon, then they went up again for a couple of hours which I sat out.

Then last evening big end of holiday dinner at Équilibre and then I ended up in the 1420 with my niece getting home at 01:30.

Famille are now cleaning apartment and were taking the Gap route anyway which took them six hours last week from Grenoble.

Temps now getting warm and with strong winds still you can almost see the snow disappearing.

All credit to those with kids handling all the necessary logistics of ski school etc though I really question how one instructor with 20 kids in tow accomplishes anything but they've been doing it for donkeys.

Evidently last week saw record numbers up the hill with nigh on 28k on the sunny wednesday.

And judging by my simple barometer of parking, think this week could be busier looking at the parking below and next to me, but maybe just that more people can drive up here now?

Temps nigh on hit double figures yesterday and my niece, once back in Grenoble said it was 16°.

Then depressingly last evening, it was stubbornly remaining at 6° so quite pleased this morning to see its -2 and I've just nerdishly been out on the field next to me testing the snow to see how frozen it is at various gradients and encouraging for Spring snow here on the South side so I'll monitor that more through out the day, and might even try it with my skins etc

That said it's meant to get warmer and freezing levels be circa 3k

Will hit the XC for some gentle cardio (no such thing as gentle in XC skating) around 09:00 and think OH and daughter planning to go up the hill mid morning which I think is madness!

@RickBoden, what data are you arriving?

There is a car park next to the hotel, which I think must be for guests, and then another one which now has a barrier, and I believe is for locals, then there is another one further down next to the cemetery.

There is a very good restaurant right next door, which ironically we are going to next Tuesday as my daughters B'day but it is haute cuisine L'Orée du Bois

Most of the restos are in the old village (ten min+ brisk walk) and we use La Manouille, as well as Pastorale and then the Equilibre, the first two have two sittings 19:00 and 21:00.

And the bar we frequent the most is the 1420.

Back to the Cross Country today, and conditions were absolute perfection for an 18km round trip up to beyond Le Casset, though getting through the hordes at Monetier was akin to running a gauntlet and not getting taken out Laughing

Snow in the field and on the steeper bank is doing its thing, now will have to wait to see what the overnight temps will drop to, and if I do a guinea pig ski-tour tomorrow Laughing

Shorts & T's on our terrace this afternoon and the first fly's of the year!

Hi, sorry for delayed reply. Things are a bit manic here in the UK getting everything ready for 2 weeks in Serre Chevalier.

We arrive on the 6th or 7th. Hotel booked from 7th. We're being a bit flexible on the journey down and taking our time. Might even stop somewhere en route for the night of the 6th and a ski on Saturday 7th if we can find somewhere suitable.

TY for car park info. Do you know if the one near the cemetery free? I remember using a free car park in Monetier last year on the SOPiB. There won't be anything left in the car.

TY also for restaurants and bar. Might see you in the 1420 as we'll probably dine out most nights. Can you recommend a decent pizza restaurant btw?
