Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Afternoon all.

Drove past the car park at the bottom of the Flek earlier.

And it was full of snow making machines.

So thought an appropriate time to start this years thread.

In the last few nights, its definitely turned colder, though its still roasting on the balcony in the sun during the day. Still warm enough to have a bbq and dry the washing outside.

Woke up to the first frost on all the roofs and it seems the impending weather forecast is showing a similar pattern. There was snow fall on the Greater Rettenstein on Monday night, and its still there. Forecast for some more on Sunday.

But other than cooling the ground temps, its far too early to expect any snowfall now to be here in a couple of weeks.

Fingers crossed for a nice cold crisp winter with plenty of bluebird days ahead.

I see from my records I skied last year for the first time on Saturday the 9th Nov.Though that was only to say I’d skied in the morning and I played golf for the last time in the afternoon

We should be over in the area Sunday 25th to watch the men's slalom. We've only ever driven through Kitzbühel once and never stopped, so will be good to see the village. No skiing for us though.

I have family here over that weekend .We are going to go to the DH on the Saturday but your welcome to stop off in Kirchberg afterwards for a beer in the way home

I know you can’t drive anywhere in Kitz with ease on the Saturday. We just jump on the free trains there and back

One of the many temp car parks are this side of Kitz so may be easier to get shuttled in

@jafa, we'll be in the train over from Jenbach. Makes total sense for us as we both have a Klimaticket and it'd be quicker than trying to drive and park anyway!

Will let you know if we get the time for a beer, depends on being back for the dog sitter!

This is probably the best place to ask this. I am staying in st Anton for the season, however I'd like to see/experience the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm for a day or two. Looking at the main weekend the accommodation seems to be extremely sparse. I could get the 8.30pm train back to St Anton (how crazy busy will this be?!), or get a later one and stay in Worgl or something - What are people's thoughts on this, is it worth it?

Trains going back in that direction after about two/three o clock are never busy
If you get a ticket for the race on the Saturday I think trains from as far afield as Innsbruck are f o c as well
The town will be hectic after the race
Then it dies down for a couple of hours as it gets dark then kicks in again round six/seven when more live music starts up again in various sites round the ( small compact) town

We have just had nearly two weeks of total sun during the day and really cold conditions when the sun drops behind the Gaisberg
Next week starting on Monday the snow gods seemingly are looking to descend properly for the fist time this season

Fingers crossed

None of the snow cannons have been on but hopefully they will also be kick started

With not having had any substantial snow now for some time, and none due in the next nine day forecast. There isnt really much to expand on other than the skiing itself on the current pistes are fine. Not all the runs here are open yet, and certainly, the run back down the Flekalmbahn wont be open until we get a substantial dump of snow.
The bowl at the top is performing well, so there is plenty of skiing to be had.
As usual, with the snow disappearing from the valleys and everywhere where there was no early season snow making, its beginning to look a bit thread bare and green.

Fortunately for us locals, the influx of this seasons visitors hasnt started yet, so plenty of good on piste skiing to be had. Though this will prob change from Saturday onwards, when the seasons main visitors arrive.

Hoping to make at least a couple of visits to the Kitzski area from our Ski Welt base in January so planning to buy the Superski pass. I might have missed it but can you buy this pass at all of the lift pass offices (in ski areas it is valid) or is it online only and only local passes in person? I have seen that you can buy online and have it delivered but some of my friends tend to wait until arrival. We are staying in Brixen

The anticipated snow that was due to arrive today, then yesterday had disappeared off Bergfex has duly arrived. Its currently still snowing at valley level and for the first time in a couple of weeks, "beginning to look a lot like christmas" Not the greatest amount I must say, but white all the same

Ill be up the mountain tomorrow as family arriving today (not allowed to go up!!) and can give an on piste update

Xmas day skiing what not to like
The top up we had a couple of days ago made it look like winter
But by the end of the day a lot of the off piste snow was again disappearing
The only realistic skiing off piste is really only possible to the sides of the pisted areas
On piste , well that was as good as expected for early skiing conditions. A mix of artificial and real snow . Hard underfoot but perfectly skiable
A lot of the cannons are once again blasting out their white gold
All in all decent skiing conditions
Next projected snow not due for another seven days
But it was really cold up top and with temps due to remain very cold on piste skiing should remain possible on all the current groomed pistes

We are heading to Kitzbuhel for UK half term (14 Feb) for a week's skiing. Really looking forward to it - our first time skiing in Austria.

How is the snow at the moment?

Obviously a long time to go, but I'm slightly nervous that quite a few slopes appear not to be open.

I wouldn’t be worried at all
Pistes are fantastic off piste atm practically non existent
But bergfex is currently forecasting another dump this weekend
ATM because it’s minus 6/7 during the day and decidedly even colder at nights the snow cannons are working to full capacity
Especially the Flek run which I’m sure will be open if not before defo after this weekends snow

If you would like regular reports of conditions in Kitzbuhel/SkiWelt I can highly recommend the You Tube videos from Fantastiche Oostenrijk
They are made by a couple of Dutch families who spend the winter there and they produce excellent on-piste videos . They are in Dutch but if I watch them on a smart tv I get a sort of AI translation into English

You do on Youtube as well. I'd been watching a couple of them over the last few days, and was thinking the voice over sounded like it was AI. They have been skiing both the Kitzbuhel area and the Ski Welt in the last week.

@jafa, excellent news.
Just starting to get my head around bus timetables for moving between Kitz and Ski Welt when we arrive in a couple of weeks....am I right in thinking the 860 and 861 buses have replaced the route numbers I had in my head (4051 maybe? The Worgl to Kitz route via Brixen). I suspect we may end up at somewhere like Schi-alm in Kirchberg and need to get back to Brixen from Fleckalmbahn by bus on at least one evening.

I was looking at the webcams yesterday and there seemed to be quite a lot of snow coming down. It looks like Fleck is now open.

When might the ski routes open? Do they need more snow to open those?

Anyone got any good recommendations for half and full day routes around the area. It’s been about 20 years since I last went to Kirchberg and I remember some of the blues needed a bit of poling towards the bottom

With minus night temps and 8/9 hours of sunshine over the next week it’s a continuation of what we’ve been having recently
This season has been following patterns of the most recent ones
Very dry spells with cold temps. We just keep crossing our fingers that the snow keeps coming every so often. It’s more the norm now that the on piste conditions are excellent but the valleys etc are more green/brown than in the past
Maybe we should just remain grateful for “ perfect” on piste conditions

@jafa, thanks, the info about pistes is welcome and the webcams look glorious. We will definitely ski kitz side on at least a couple of days when we arrive for our week in SkiWelt on 24th. I suspect a couple will want to try to get as far as we possibly can from Brixen before taking on the next challenge of making it back too. The info about trains is also helpful because I think we might also finish skiing in Brixen and jump onto the 860 bus for a couple of hours in Kirchberg or Kitzbuhel before returning on the bus or train for dinner. If you had to pick one bar in each of Kitzbuhel and Kirchberg for us not to miss what would be your suggestions? Only Eisbar seems to pop up on my Insta so far. A lot! I assume any 860 bus with the SB icon will also be free, anything after this will be paid? Last one, I promise, are there plenty of taxis around? That might be easiest anyway, at least for the return journey

Tbf there aren’t many bars here that I’d worry about
The bar at the bottom of the gondola coming down into Brixen fm the north side is as good as any from memory
There’s always plenty of taxis around to get back if you miss a bus or train
Living in Kirchberg means I don’t ever need to end up in Kitz at the end of the day for a beer
There’s either Ober Kaiser near the bottom of the Maeirl or just before the bottom of the Flek Gamsstad ( helicopter bar)
But then I’m not on holiday!! So I’m not usually worried about a beer until I get back home

Was going back up the Maeirl chair today with a couple of the US ski team
They said the conditions atm are the best they’ve had here in years
Couldn’t agree more
There are virtually no moguls anywhere even as I was skiing down the bottom half of Maeirl at half twelve
Only downside it was more challenging skiing back to the house across the fields as some of the route was a bit icy
But we are now due some more snow over the weekend
Fingers crossed for that

@jonm, we walked out of the Kitzalm today after waiting 20 minutes without being approached. We ended up at Rohrerstadl (it has a dinosaur on top) and thought that excellent. We also then tried Schi Alm and Gamstadl for apres on the way back and all of my group preferred the latter. Heading back tomorrow.
I found some of the runs decent but the wider parts of Blue 26 and others were distinctly choppy later in the day
