Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Maurienne Vallée 2025/26

New ski season alert!
It’s been great to meet fellow SnowHeads this summer and exchange tales of renovation challenges over several BBQ & rosé sessions but now the real business of being out there begins!
Orelle and VT opens the winter festivities on Friday 22/11/25, followed by various dates through December including Les Sybelles 13/12/25, Le Grand Domaine 14/12/25, Galibier-Thabor ski area 14/12/25 (but maybe Valloire December 6, 2025 it seems?)

As Maurienne Vallée newbies we are boggled by the variety of ski pass options there are. It’s clearly dependent on time being spent out there but we will be 30-40 days skiing November to April (we think!) so we plan-

Skiogrande pass at €7/season and then 20% off day rates and 50% on Saturdays plus free days every 8th day (I think?)- 3 days in 7 max/resort area
https://www.skiogrande.com/les-tarifs/

And the (?) new 3V equivalent at €30/season and 10% day rate discount and every 9th day free to open up extra Orelle/VT and the wider 3V skiing beyond the 3 days/week above-
https://saison.valthorens.com/en/

And then from Orelle the oréOlé card with 20% discount and every 6th day free- which seems a better offering for the same access and discounts -
https://oreole.eliberty.fr/en/

However there are also really good early seasons offers for each ski area-

Valmeinier - Galibier-Thabor €418/season
https://www.skipass-valmeinier.com/en/forfait-ski/1-saison-forfait-503/?s=2025-09-12&dp=0

Les Sybelles- (not yet open but seems to suggest v cheap September offers soon on their way)
https://www.sybelles.ski/en/sybelles-ski-area/winter-special-offers/

Le grand domaine €486/season-
https://stfrancois.labellemontagne.com/fr/hiver/forfaits/#early-bookings

HMV pass for the Frejus end of the valley at €430/season-
https://www.valfrejus.ski/en/ski-passes-prices/

And then a mind boggling selection of 2 or 3 day/week options for Orelle/VT and 3V-
https://ski.orelle.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Price-list-season-2425-2.pdf

And Orelle only €250/season so skiing every day- November to May. Not a load of runs but skiing from 800m up to 3200m- I’d be buying that if it was in rural Kent for an after work outing!
Anyone with more Maurienne valley experience on what they’re doing on the ski pass front?

Hope the renovations are coming on nicely.

We’ve had season passes for Valmeinier/Valloire and it worked well but obviously did limit us to that area. Currently we don’t get to our place often enough to justify a 3 valleys season pass at over €1500 (Orelle only last year was €312 just for December, think the €250 you mention was the kids rate, it then becomes Orelle-Val Thorens for the rest of the season at about €1220 per adult unless I’ve read it wrong which is quite possible!)

For the last couple of years and probably for this winter we’ve utilised the Skiogrande card which works well for us as we can just check the weather daily and pop off to wherever is looking best or indeed had a fresh snowfall, so not limiting ourselves to a set area and indeed a free day every 8th skied. It does however limit you to just Orelle and Val Thorens but gives same discount as the Oreole card I believe, and if you time your days skied correctly you can ski there for free (8th day), always helpful as it’s the most expensive area in the valley. If you want to go wider into 3 valleys you would need a different option.

Happy skiing.

Ah yes Orelle only is €312- €250 is kids rate. Not planning to do it anyway but still very good value if very limited.

Finally committed and booked a week in Valloire for end of March next season. Never been to the resort, or indeed any of the Maurienne so would welcome some pointers on where holds the best snow, where nice long cruiser blues are and where’s nice to eat at night. We’re stopping in Valloire town itself, right next to the (what appears to be updated) Setaz gondola.

Lucky you.
One of the best areas in France. Plus, the unique combination of 750 years old village with a weekly market where you buy cheese and air dried sausages directly from the farmer.

Just don't tell too many people.

Not done Valmeinier/valloire before. In a normal season snow wise would most runs still be skiable 7th-14th March. I’m advanced skier and love piste variety if there is no fresh snow. 150km is a good size but a little on the smaller side especially if say 50km of that might be iffy in March. Will be skiing week before in Les Sybelles and fav French resort is Serre Chevalier. Have done 3V, Les arcs, PDS, VD etc but looking for new places to try.

I have been in both Valmeinier and Valloire. And in SC.

The area feels larger than the advertized 160 km.
It is spread over 2-3 valleys (depending on what you call a valley) and 5 mountainsides.

The blue valley descend to Valloire (Lutins) is normally open till end of season.
That one is a white ribbon towards the end of the season, and slushy on the lowest part, but still open.

The only slope you will probably miss is Armera, one of the most scenic pistes of the Alps. The lowest part is without snowmaking.

You will be fine for the vast majority of runs at that time in March, May just be a bit slushy lower down in the afternoon. We will be in the area 15-21 March. If you’ve not been before try and get yourself up to Bonneval Sur Arc at the end of the valley, it’s only a small resort so it’s quiet and offers some great skiing.

Excellent. Will book in Valmeiner for a week to get my dad out from UK with TO and then I will tag 3-5 days at Les sybelles or nearby onto the trip. Bonneval probably too far on this trip as using trains/buses. Slush is fine was in flaine end of March last year and was waterskiing/dodging dirt into Les carroz at 1200m. The whole valley looks a wonderful place to do a season with a car as can ski 3V, Italy, Serre che and all the valley resorts as well. Where would be the best base for a season assuming you had a car?

Pretty much anywhere in the valley would be fine…our place is in St Michel de Maurienne - travelling times vary from 5 mins to Orelle for 3V, Valmeinier 15 mins, Les Sybelles 30-45 mins, Val Cenis/Aussois, La Norma, Valfrejus all about 45 mins then Bonneval about an hour. Les Karellis is also worth a visit, again small and it’s family orientated but doesn’t get busy at all and day ski passes are very cheap….Through the tunnel to Bardonnechia and Sauze 30 mins or so or back down the valley to St Francois Longchamp linked to Valmorel about 45 mins. St Jean, St Michel and Modane all have train stations and you can hire a car locally if needed….Modane is a pretty good place to look for accom (not the prettiest place but very accessible to all above), you can knock off or add on 10/15 mins to resorts mentioned above depending if you go up or down the valley.

Season passes are available for HMV resorts around €430 if bought by October normally and you can look at a Skiogrande card that gives daily discounts at the 17 areas in the valley, with a free day for every 8 skied.

You probably know there is a one week Haute Maurienne ski pass that allows you to ski one day at each of the Haute Maurienne resorts you mention and as many of them as you like in the one you buy it at. But that does mean skiing all the week in the Haute Maurienne (which, by the way, has very good off-piste).

We're looking for a small apartment in the Maurienne valley for 3 weeks around the end of March / beginning of April 26. @andmelffion's pad suited us well last year but is already taken. Any other suggestions?

I've a question about the Skiogrande card: once you've accumulated 80 points (enough for a free day), will the next day automatically be free, or can you choose when to use it?

Albiez is probably the most sheltered but it sounds like the snow is limited at the moment:

Les Karellis has snow and is not particularly exposed. It’s relatively easy to get to and is also one of our favourites:

Can’t help with Le Corbier, but there’s a really experienced guy in Valfrejus Yves@valfreeride.com who is a fantastic teacher/coach. He seems to be the “don” of French instructors as everyone lets him in everywhere he goes and seems to be held in very high regard.

If you have a way of getting there he would we worth travelling for.

Good conditions in the Haute Maurienne last week despite 1 week of warm temperatures already the week prior.

Cold chalky snow in the shade:

Good spring snow on South faces if you got your timing right:

Much foehny-haziness for the second half of the week, but the snow stayed good!:

Direct route to the car park..:

More fine couloir action:

Spot the skier on the right...

Summary - it was surprisingly quiet at all the areas we skied considering it was the last week of the french school holidays. Pistes everywhere were in great condition and the off piste was very good considering the weather and snow set-up coming into the week...
