Looks to be staying on the mostly cool side the next week or so. And reasonably dry for a change after Sunday.

| @orange, all makes a lot of sense. Out of interest given this snow was exceptional, was does an “average season”look like as am seriously considering a return trip given the sheer convenience of the train link and bus stop just outside the train station- could even potentially time it with the Caledonian sleeper from Birmingham to Dundee if looking for a long weekend (though I guess I would lose the quiet midweek advantage that was quite considerable for lack of lift queues!). Is the snow usually from Easterly winds meaning sunny side etc gets the best conditions? Does the middle valley usually open in an average season when there’s not too much snow to open? Or can middle valley opening be limited by staffing? |
We don't have average seasons any more, very cyclical and impossible to guess. Anything E or SE will give Glenshee snow, Lecht as well. Where it lands and how it sits is random, very much depends on wind speeds. You'll see the Carn Aosda side has been stripped in places by the wind meanwhile gullies are full, that's what the fences are for to catch the snow. This season they have done their job very well ! Scottish skiing is very much 'make a plan, prepare to change it or be massively dynamic in your attempts to ski'. Im off today of course when the sun comes out.
Caenlochan is all done, Patrol on it now, wind might scupper it opening though !

Top of Glencoe is loaded! Just the snow arrived from East so cover is in usual places (such as the rocky garden).
Glenshee certainly got best of the snow. But its wrong to suggest west coast is lean

Fair point that re Glencoe, above rescue hut is good. Opposite of last season when all the snow was blown onto the plateau. I’ll edit original post actually.
For those asking, I have a photo of Glas Maol, if someone knows how to post it I will.

From the Glenshee facebook
The hard work has paid off.. trust us it took our team a lot of work.. most doing well over 12 hour days!!
Caenlochan is a GO! We should have our Meall Odhar cafe open too. Still a bit of setting up etc but will keep you all updated.
As you can see the conditions look great over here so we are super excited to see everyone this weekend!

What you can’t see is the headwall further right which is maybe 10m ? And the cornice where the walker went through last weekend and the resulting avalanche. It’s immense. We’re getting there !!

Thinking about heading over to either Lecht or Glenshee on Sunday - but also wondering about Cairngorm.
Lecht is my local, relatively speaking - only 1hr20mins in the car. But pretty short runs, so easy to get bored?
Glenshee more like 1hr50 (and what feels like more of a faff to drive to), went once a few seasons ago. Potentially more lifts and runs available - bigger area.
Cairngorm is the furthest of the three at 2hrs10 - so I've never been, but keep getting tempted when it's good like this.
Thoughts from anyone who's been recently, or for whom one of these is your local - what would you do for the day?

@thehighlandcowboy, I really enjoyed my time at Glenshee that was uncrowded mid week- it looks like they’ve got a couple more lifts open- beginning to make more progress with the middle valley. However Cairngorm has almost all its lifts open and a fair few runs so skiable area may be not too far apart- could be worth a punt if Glenshee is really busy on Sunday.

I think all areas will be busy Sunday so I’d pick what you want. I’m about to go to the Lecht the kids just now so will report back, I did go through Wed night but it was a total blizzard so no idea what it was like !

Thanks all - there is surprisingly little in driving times, so I might brave Cairngorm and the funicular. I'd prefer to have gone today, but it's the horses' 6-weekly foot trim today, so I have to be at home for that...hey ho!

| I will report back on all things Nevis tomorrow evening. |
Woke bright and early at the Nevis Range Base Camp Hotel, excitement mounting under clear skies and thick frost, with the ski hill looking very inviting above
Arrived at the ticket office at 09.25, intent on being on the first gondola at 09.30 - to find the gondola had broken down minutes before and that it might take 3 hours to fix. The issue was the lone mechanic was at the top of the hill, working on grooming runs, so he was stuck...
We could've cried!
Now on the access chair at Glencoe after an hour's drive from Nevis. The car park is very busy, so could be a bit of queuing going on...

That is unbelievable the Nevis Range voluntarily leaving their gondola unfixed for the bulk of a prime skiing day

Can report the Lecht was quite fun earlier. Nice new snow, plenty of terrain open and they got the Buzzard running as well and the ungroomed runs were pow pow. Somehow fluked arriving at the Tomintoul gates 30s after they opened them

I was up on Glencoe today, added 3 pictures to my link below. Lovely weather, sunshine no wind, snow was great up top. I was tired so left early as the pistes were breaking up, and becoming dangerous. (either the pistes were dangerous or I was just tired)
I stood watching a skier in front of me fall spectacularly and had to climb back up the piste to get his poles. Then I proceeded to fall in exactly the same spot. (too icy, or probably too many snowboarders kicking off the snow at that point)
Pictures are mainly of piste condition rather than anyone in particular skiing or boarding. Should be nice tomorrow and Tuesday looks like it will benefit from snowfall on Sunday.

Finally got skiing about 11.15 and had a great day at Glencoe.
- Sunny start, though it felt like a lot of shady skiing, with the sun behind the hill.
- A bit of fresh snow had freshened up the pistes nicely, with pockets of fresh. Otherwise, some icy bits that needed care. Very decent overall.
- 5 minute queues for the top T-bar, though straight on once the button top had been de-iced.
- Brilliant views, as usual.

Cairngorm just lovely today. I was teaching so spent most of the morning on the beginners patch but after lunch we went up the funicular and had a few runs over at the Ptarmigan t-bar. Great snow up there. Got a few runs in on my own, M1 was in excellent condition but the 105 and the Gunbarrel were icy in places.

Those climbers are in probably the most dangerous part of that whole hill right now, we saw this yesterday and could not believe it. That cornice above them is v fragile and we’ve already had one person triggered slide last weekend. Anyway, I’m sure they knew what the were doing !

Yes, was a good day up at Cairngorm today! I managed to squeeze into the upper car park about 0910ish, reckon my car was a few back from where you took your photo!
Some good long runs, and some fresh snow falling on and off during the day. I called it a day at 3pm; Scottish skiing is hard on the legs when you're used to Alpine chairlifts
Will definitely head back on the strength of today's trip, which was my first. Nice drive over from Aberdeenshire too.

Glenshee perhaps its best conditions this century.

There’s a decent amount that’s for sure and more to come. Longer terms there’s signs of milder air end of Feb but we will see what that comes to.
Road was a shitshow this afternoon, bad accident and then carnage in the Slide. Hope everyone ok and anyone going south sorry had a long drive. I was supposed to go home but in braemar for the night now so might as well stay for the rest of the week

Nope not even close! Some areas have awesome cover others are low to average (including at Glenshee). Best since covid but there have been way better years since 2000.
