Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The general trend looks like a cool down from Thursday and then staying cooler than average and perhaps not so wet, for the week after that with some snow over the hills.

I didn’t think the viz was that bad on Thursday and Friday. The problem was all the heather was buried on Sunnyside so there was less contrast than usual Laughing

@mountainaddict, On Friday it was possible to ski from the top of Sunnyside off piste down that wide face on the left hand side to the road and then back up the Dink Dink. Just had to be careful crossing over the stream. Bit of speed needed snowHead

On the right hand side there was an equally good run down to the Anemometer mast then onto the Poma.

Looks pretty snowy and less rainy from mid mountain up for tomorrow and Wed- as long as the road is clear enough for the bus from Dundee to run, that’s good enough for me Very Happy On train to “Fundee” via Edinburgh, made it to Bristol so no turning back now Cool might even see you on the slopes @orange, !

Glenshee looks like it will certainly have a decent top up of snow Tues night so as long as not too much to affect access may be a good shout

Mate was up at Glenshee yesterday, had to leave early as his son had a (non ski) injury flareup - but enjoyed it as always.

Said that a few more lifts opened up would improve things (I havent spoken to him yet to explore what he meant).

I'd just read the same article @kitenski Smile Now signs of the highs over Scandinavia finally breaking down. The outlook on MWIS.org.uk is as follows:

Quote:
Becoming colder for all areas during this week, with much mountain terrain frozen again to increasingly lower elevations - soonest toward the north and east of Scotland. East to northeasterly winds in the second half of the week, turning northerly toward the weekend - the distribution of snow showers shifting with time from eastern hills to more north-facing mountains, particularly Scotland. Away from showers later in the week, brighter than recently with sunshine and clearer hills.

Hi all, I haven't been to Glenshee in ... 20 years! Have booked my pass for Saturday, I am aware it's going to be absolutely mobbed! Is 8am a good time to aim for getting to the carpark in order to get parked fairly close to the lifts? We've got kids so want to have easy access to the car at lunchtime!

^ I would very much aim to be there for 8 yes esp. this weekend and also make sure you have booked ski hire if you need it. Forecast is good, SUN, light winds, good snow, school holidays starting, Patrol are on at 7:45 which says all you need to know !

Today murky, will start snowing lower imminently as temp has dropped like a stone since 6am and wind moved round from S to SE to E, more snow tonight don't think it will be much maybe 4-5cm, same tomorrow night, snowy day tomorrow oh good another day in a firking cloud hahaha then i'm driving over the lecht to get home for a few days assuming i can get over that way. They will have Caen and Meall open this weekend i think.

Can ski passes be collected the day before, to avoid queueing in the morning?

Gear hire all booked! While I don’t mind skiing in bad weather I’m very happy the sun is going to be out because it’s the niblings first time skiing so really need them to fall in love Eh oh!

No but there is an automated window for prebookings that you, erm, scan something maybe dunno and it spits out your pass. Far right window.

Friday will be pretty normal, Saturday will be busy. If you do skin please check the skin route on the board by the Cairnwell chair, we prefer to keep people away from the pistes if possible.

Really enjoyed today thank you for all your tips@orange I have to say things are going like clockwork with my Glenshee mini break. The Four Points Flex hotel right by Dundee station and Ember bus stop to Glenshee was a great find- clean, modern, spacious, great breakfast and a v helpful receptionist! E11 on time, v convenient arrival/depature (gets to ski area for 9:40 and leaves at 16:55) and driver supremely unbothered about any weather warning for tomorrow. With regards to rain/snow and wind- not a major issue for me, I’ve had far less vis and more cold at Alpine high altitude resorts! No lift queues. Barely any ski hire queue. Could find a table in the cafe easily. Yes snow is a bit wet and spring like due to recent rain and a few bare patches to look out for but as it’s soft heather rather than rocks no big deal. Enjoyed making the most of the Cairnwell Chair when it was running (a bit wind dependent) got a bit erm lost when doing the Tiger (a nice challenging black) but hey all routes lead to the road…the bowel in between the chair and t bar is pretty decent too. My only slight regret is that middle valley was still closed as would have loved to have access to those reds but I think it’s pretty good going so far!

About 1 hr 25 from Dundee (stops at Blairgowie and Spittal of Glenshee if you are staying closer). You can def take skis on board- it’s a coach with a hold that is barely used. I decided against taking my skis- prioritised having enough changes of clothes…which was prob a good thing in my case because although I started at the start of the Cross Country line in Plymouth it became particularly rammed after Birmingham- Cross Country only have 4 carriages at best! I think my skis would have been crushed! LNER which I changed to at Edinburgh with more spacious longer trains could potentially have accommodated.

Great to hear. I love how friendly Scottish skiing is. You are never on your own for long, always someone to chat to and often have a run with. Love that.
If they run the Cairnwell triple chair that will probably mean at least one big run without any queue. In they can get the Caenlochan running, well, happy days Madeye-Smiley

LNER have a totally unsatisfactory ski carriage policy, where it's basically at their discretion on the day as to whether to allow skis. As their cheapest fares are usually for a specific train, I wouldn't dare chance it. Unfortunately, I've seen enough jobsworth train staff over the years to put me off.

Thursday update , temp slowly dropped overnight and it was snowing basically all day and getting colder and colder. A few pistes setup quite , erm, awful but things improved all day. Is snowing hard now and will do all night poss 5-10cm. Team are still working on Caenlochan, issue with the brake after having to dig 10ft down at every tower to sort an electrical problem due to the weight of the snow. Weekend hopefully. Talking of which Saturday is the day. It will be mobbed in a good way. Sun, fresh snow, yum yums.
I just came over the Lecht and it was Tonkin down snow and windy as, doubt the road will stay open tonight.
Hope everyone had a good day.

If you ever want to hear a great story, 30 years ago today I was skiing with my mate at Glenshee. Two young guys out for a hoon. My mate crashed and went through a 4x4 fence post headfirst with no helmet. It was 1995. I did what I could when I found him but I thought he was dead. First patroller on scene did everything right and we got a seaking in and he was flown low level to Dundee for neurosurgery which saved his life. Today all 3 of us were working on Patrol together - how’s that for a story !

Sorry I missed you @orange, but had another great day with a slight interlude in the middle with my only fall of the weekend when I was prob being a bit too speedy on the red GS run not allowing for surface changes! Fell off , one ski was released and bounced against the snow fencing pushing forward the binding in the process… had to gingerly get myself down rest of the mountain on one ski! Hire shop were v good and replaced the ski promptly. Actually better vis and less wet than yesterday, due to light snow rather than light rain! Cairnwell chair was sadly not in action due to the wind but were able to drop in most of the bowls and did one exhausting hike up the ridge to do a final run of the Tiger. Will post a full report in the resort review selection when back in Plymouth

@orange, I'm free this Saturday and also next Wednesday, and am leaning towards next Wednesday as I think it'll be rammed this weekend. Plus it gives more time for Meall Odhar / Caenlochan and beyond to be dug out, and I think the weather forecast looks OK at this long range.

What do you think?

Are lifts more likely to be open on weekends than weekdays if all other things are equal? Or will everything be open that can be, regardless of the day?

I am sure this Saturday will be nuts! Anyone who does decide to do it, I advise a VERY early start! Well before 8AM (and don't park like an idiot if you are there early!). In general if you are in good shape to get on the lifts as soon as they open you will get a couple of hours of good skiing before the queues build. Even on the busiest day. On mad busy days we often ski hard first lift to about 11, then call it a day.

If you want to avoid queues then head to Glencoe. Or maybe even Nevis Range.
In both cases the upper runs in great condition and uplift has been quiet all season as everyone skiing on the east.

Glenshee & Cairngorm will be busy over the weekend given the excellent conditions.
However I am delighted for them. They are overdue a good season.

Well....Caenlochan is the current focus, the amount of snow in there is quite something and it caused some damage which they have been fixing since Monday. Once that's sorted it will run as will Meall Odhar. That then gets us to Coire Fionn which is also being worked on. They have been out to Glas Maol so it's very much 'in play' I honestly don't know when, soon. All the pisting is done out to there though and as soon as we can get out there safely we will assess it and get it going. We'll obvs have a day when we ski it only as Patrol , just, because Laughing

@orange, all makes a lot of sense. Out of interest given this snow was exceptional, was does an “average season”look like as am seriously considering a return trip given the sheer convenience of the train link and bus stop just outside the train station- could even potentially time it with the Caledonian sleeper from Birmingham to Dundee if looking for a long weekend (though I guess I would lose the quiet midweek advantage that was quite considerable for lack of lift queues!). Is the snow usually from Easterly winds meaning sunny side etc gets the best conditions? Does the middle valley usually open in an average season when there’s not too much snow to open? Or can middle valley opening be limited by staffing?
