I'm thinking of a 4 day solo skiing trip to zillertal, i'm 66, i've previously done mahrhofen and zell, so now i am looking at the hochzillertal area, so where should i stay out of fugen or kaltenbach, i like a beer in the evening, i'll be going b&b so need a few restaurants or take a ways, i fancy doing a tandem paragliding flight, i'm an intermediate skier so i can ski anything except moguls, flying in to innsbruck, so should i choose fugen or kaltenbach....thanks.

@philusher76, personally I think Fügen has a bit more going on than Kaltenbach. There is the Postalm at the bottom of the ski area in Kaltenbach which is usually quite lively, but there's not a huge amount else going on there.
Fügen has the umbrella bar at the bottom of the Spieljochbahn that is popular, and there's a few bars and restaurants around the village, and definitely a kebab/pizza place too.
If you stay in Fügen you'll either have to get the bus up to Hochfügen or bus/train to Kaltenbach to start your day.
If you want to do a tandem paraglide, I've seen this advertised next to the Spieljochbahn. I can't remember the name of the person, but I can walk past on the way home if you want details? The landing spot is in the field below the Spieljochbahn just above the Mia Alpina hotel, so I regularly see them coming in to land when I'm working from home.

Something that I had no idea about before about a week ago was that on Thursday nights there's an evening show in Hochfügen.
https://www.hochfuegenski.com/en/plan-book/experiences-courses/good-morning-gondola-1/
Last night was the first show of the season, and I took part for Ski Check, the school i'm working for.
Lots of synchro skiing, paragliders, fire dancers, music, synchro piste machines etc etc A really fun evening and great atmosphere. There's also night skiing available free of charge to everyone else before the show too.
Well worth checking it out if you happen to be in the area and can get up there. I understand there's bus services that run up there from Fügen.

Somewhere in the region of 10-20cm of snow fell again last night up the mountain. Probably around 5cm down here in the valley. It's not too cold today in the valley, so it's melting a bit, which means the roads are nice a clear.
A nice top up again, which we'll never complain about!

How’s the conditions? Is there an off piste base at all? Would like to come down for some touring the next dump if it’s good.

@Legendarry, I haven't skied since Sunday, and I was teaching then so was only on piste. It's pretty low tide in general, there's off piste available in the right places, but it'll need a real big snowfall to be anything decent and there's nothing in the forecast at the moment.
I'd say it's our worst season so far of the 3 we've been here, but even so, the piste skiing is pretty decent.

@Legendarry, What @swskier, said...
There's also a persistent weak layer in the snow pack which is a serious concern off piste at the moment.

We've been in the Zillertal for the last two weeks and whilst the overall snow cover is very poor (looks more like the end of March than the end of Jan/beginning of Feb with the temperature in the valley on Tuesday 13C!) the piste skiing is still very good. Whether this will remain true once the school holidays begin and after Fasching remains to be seen. But if it doesn't dump snow soon then I think skiing at Easter in eastern Austria this year will be over. One of the reasons is that the reservoirs for snow making look very empty.

Hi snowheads,
Anyone in Mayrhofen next week fancy meeting up for a half day skiing? We were there two weeks ago and my daughter fell and broke her collarbone. So myself and the wife are splitting our time skiing and looking after her during the day. Not a big lover of skiing on my own. 52 year old Irish male. Good intermediate. Been skiing on and off from 12. Would love to meet up cheers!

Arrived in Munich tonight but our luggage hasn't. So might be looking for gloves, goggles, trousers, etc. Any suggestions if anywhere hires these or best places to get reasonably priced gear in Mayrhofen?

BA, Belfast-Heathrow-Munich. Hopefully it's on a flight to Munich today which means we'll be scrambling for some gear for a day or 2, just need to find cheap gloves and trousers for me, wife and son. Was hiring skis and boots so all fine with that.

Ah ok, I have the same journey in a couple of weeks but EJ Edinburgh to Munich for a couple of nights before getting the train up to Mayrhofen for a couple of weeks.
Hope you find what you need and the snow is good for you

@carvetoz, it's a bad season, but the snow making in the Zillertal is very good, so the piste conditions in all areas are good, albeit it's mainly artificial snow.

Make sure you keep receipts for absolutely everything. Do that and BA are usually good a reimbursing passengers. And from experience yes, for a ski trip if the bag with your ski clothes in is delayed that does include buying new ski base layers/jackets/trousers/etc.

Probably worth an update as i've been off work all week and teaching every day.
I think we've had in the region of 1m of snow from last Sunday to today. I've been really fortunate (or I was in @SaraJ's good books) that I've only one had nursery slope lesson this week, and lots of opportunities to ski around Hochzillertal/Hochfügen and dabble off the edge of the pistes to enjoy the powder.
On Wednesday morning we had a beautiful bluebird day
Mrs Swskier and I free skied this morning in Hochfügen and while the off piste was now a bit chopped up, it was still super fun, light and soft powder. We didn't venture too far off the pistes, she's a newbie to off piste, and avalanche danger was at a level 4 above the treeline.
There's been some wind, and the flat light meant I was caught out by a huge wind blown patch of powder on the piste resulting in a double ejection
There's some good fun skiing to be had to the right side of black piste 7, and with the soft powder, I tried to push myself to hit some jumps in there
The sun and a bit of warmth will be showing up in the middle of next week, and that will start to compact the pistes and firm them up a bit. With them being as soft as they are currently, they're fairly chopped up and bumpy by the afternoon.

Apparently that warning message yesterday meant nothing. By lunchtime all the lift accessible offsite at Gerlos was skied out. Mostly by people without backpacks so no avalanche gear.
Admittedly a bit hypocritical of me but we had some rather exciting days doing some very low angle touring around Gerlos. Every few minutes was a massive whoompf sound. We planned it with all necessary precautions - so happy with our risk level. But I’ve never heard such an unhappy snow pack. At one point near Fitzenalm, the entire snow pack dropped by 3cm - or a tree suddenly grew .
Absolutely loads of powder. But a bit of a rain crust from yesterdays precipitation. I’m not holding out too much hope that this snowpack heals. Looks like it’s going to be defensive skiing for the rest of the season. Hopefully I’m wrong.

@Legendarry, We ended up in Mayrhofen yesterday, and it was a nice reminder why we don't ski there. That said, the skiing over at Eggalm was really nice and quiet, but the amount of people skiing off piste under the 6er Eggalm Nord chair was crazy, especially as barely anyone had a backpack on so definitely wouldn't have had avalanche gear.

I don’t know how to @ properly sorry!
@matrix - we were around Brunellkopf and Schönbichl.
Another general question. The guidebook states that for the routes above Hippach that you park at the Ghs Mösl. But when we went there it’s closed and all parking around seems to be for the hotels or you need a lift ticket. Does someone have some secret beta for where to park?
In general. I think everyone has such powder envy that this is the new future. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. You want to ski pow so you have to ski it as early as possible. Results in this and the amount of deaths we are seeing.

@Legendarry, I have never driven up there in the winter. Normally you can park in the underground and then pay @swskier, would probably know.

@Legendarry, @Matrix, for the Möslbahn area, there's an official car park with barrier which has outdoor and indoor parking.
Alternatively, just past the lift/ immediately next to it on the left is a grassy/muddy/snowy area, and you can park here too. It's between the Möslbahn and the Hotel Bergkristall.
If you're looking to tour up on the Höhenstrasse, towards Rastkogelhütte, you could also consider driving further up from the Möslbahn, and parking up at this car park which is next to the barrier that will have closed off the road.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/hr1wna7uS9rRBSrd6
Alternatively, we've also parked here on a dog walk once when the Höhenstrasse was still closed.

Out of interest @Legendarry, which guidebook are you using? Also, if you want to tag people properly, you click on their name on the left and it will add the tag to the message.

To avoid the carry on that you're having (looking for replacement kit), we always pack those items - plus ski socks and ski polo - in hand luggage. Ski boots go in there too, if we're flying with anyone apart from Ryanair, as their free hand luggage size is too small.
