Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Always prefer to use Combes & Chatelet chairs out of Mottaret when heading for VT, in common with many others. Agree there will be more pressure / queues for Plattieres now.

First to last lift today followed by 1hr of digging the car out! Great conditions everywhere that's open. La Masse opened at 1400hrs, we must have been in first 100 down, absolutely amazing.

Top lifts were open but links closed. We were chatting to an ESF instructor on Bruyeres who was clearly very cross with people ducking under the ropes to ski closed pistes. She was saying whilst she understands for alot of people we have 1 week a year to do this she very eloquently spoke about how this puts the ski patrol and any instructors around in danger should anything go wrong.

More snow tomorrow.....

Sunday through until Tuesday look lovely. The ECM model doesn't give us a precipitation ensemble, but the GFS model suggests the likelihood is continuing dry and calm, but about half its members have something messing up the fair weather later next week.

The GFS ensemble on Monday was a good guide. Both ECM & GFS today have next week looking dry, calm & mild(ish) throughout.

Hey all, has anyone heard any more details about the slide which overran the (blue) Biche piste in Méribel (coming off the top of TC Pas du Lac) yesterday around lunchtime? No one seriously hurt but there were reportedly a lot of pisteurs on site with probes for quite a while. Lad 3 and I were in Les M at the time, but had (understandably) frantic calls from Mum. The only report I’ve seen is from latania.co.uk’s facebook page.

This link to facebook might work: La Tania Facebook Page. But you’d need to log into facebook to see it Mad .

May do one of my silly long trip reports, but not much to discuss. We were confined to the lower reaches of Courchevel for most of the week in pretty but challenging conditions. Spent a morning on a snowboard in pursuit of that lovely surfing feeling, but came away with a reminder that snowboarding is hard.

As per the Dauphine article linked above, triggered by 4 skiers, 2 of whom were buried in the slide but rescued by the pisteurs. 1 hour of probe lines etc to make sure no piste skiers were caught. Ihaven't heard anything on my network that contradicts this version...

Going by the photo in the Dauphine article (I stayed Courch side yesterday to avoid the sun warmed snow) its the shoulder before Pas du Lac.

In other news - an 'interesting' 10 days of weather but once again Courchevel confirmed its place near the top of my list for great storm skiing...

On Tuesday I ended up skinning up to Le Praz as the roads were completely jammed in the morning (1hr40 Bozel to le Praz on one of the morning buses apparently...) - for some reason my client was not very keen to head out so I made the most of it with some tree laps:

Most of the week was spent with some more resilient skiers and as we had the run of La Tania, Le Praz, and 1650 pretty much every day we had a ball...

It didn't look like much fun over in Meribel or the Belleville valley most days judging by the minimal number of lifts open! (Photo from a friend...)

Yesterday was dad/daughter ski day...

A 'few' positive results from the heli-bombing of the Chanrossa bowl yesterday morning... (not my photo but can't find the original photographer to credit...):

Fab first day of six today, headed VT side from base in Mottaret, took in runs down to St M de B, Menuires & VT itself then skied down to Plan Bouchet vis the lovely, remote Combe Rosaele which I think is a 'ski route'. Then back over & down to Menuires for the chairs back to Mottaret. Skier behaviour was good. Lift queues were biggish at some pinchpoints. Weather was awesome. Snow was great.

@chocksaway, cheers. Had searched Le Dauphiné, but didn’t see anything this AM. I was well shook by the photo of a buried piste I’ve bimbled down dozens (if not scores) of times, and in fact was going to be heading Mottaret-way from Saulire around that time (yes, I know Biche goes the other way) but for the queues at TP Saulire (TC Vizelle being shut at the time).

While we’re at it, I was giving dagger-eyes to the folk ducking the rope on the top of TS Bouc Blanc to drop down toward Lanches all week given the obvious-to-me fracturing/slabs above the Lanches piste with a >40% slope perpendicular to the piste-skiers’ right and the DDL bowl on their left. Was I right to be salty or was I letting my own awful OP technique yuck their yums?

Heading to Les Menuires in a couple of weeks. My OH has been in rental boots since she started skiing 3 years ago. We're looking at the option of buying boots in resort once we arrive. Can anyone recommend a shop that offers a good fitting service. I've seen Prosneige but it seems you have to got to Meribel or VT for a fitting. Ideally we would arrive on a Saturday afternoon and head to a fitting. Thanks.

Can I get some recommendations of where in Les Menuires to stay (not specific chalets, but areas). Key for us are:

a) access to ski school meeting points (kids can ski down)
b) supermarkets as we self cater
c) nice family type restaurants
d) parking - is there paid for covered parking?
e) a pub/bar for an evening drink post skiing

I know there are loads of areas at various heights, I would appreciate Snowheads recommendations which would suit.

Here is a resort map showing ski school meeting points and paid for covered parking:

Two lots of precincts as far as I know - front de neige where Menuires and Roc 1 lifts start and Bruyerres - where you will find supermarkets, restaurants, bars.

I've stayed in the Adonis, Jettay, Lac de Lou and Lauzes - so if you want to know anything about those or those areas feel free to ask.

I booked in January for a trip in the last week of March for the Belambra Club Neige & Ciel. We've not been to L3V before but I had a look on google maps and looks like there's close access to lots of stuff (bars/restaurants/shops) in La Croisette.

And we'll be getting a bus transfer so only a short walk from the main bus stop so that suits us.

@winterdragon,

if your bus transfer drops you at the Gare Routiere (opposite the sports centre) then you should make use of the public lift. On Google street view the door to the lift is under a confusing yellow sign, which has downward pointing arrows. Go up to the third floor I think (shops level) and turn left and go to the end of the shops and restaurants and up the metal gantry. When you get to the top, where the very frequent Preyerand gondola arrives, the path to your accommodation will be just ahead of you and then to the left.

Just had a lovely week of skiing in 3V - aside from the schlep between the top of the Olympe lift and the Chaudanne cluster staying in Brides-les-Bains was totally fine. Did most of the Meribel, St Martin, and Les Menuires areas plus a couple forays over the VT and Courchevel sides, plenty left to justify coming right back next year.

Well, that and it was toasty as hell. Great visibility, but when you're waiting in the sun to get on the lifts the heat catches up *quickly*. The Pas du Lac bubbles having an electrical fault just before we got on them today didn't help the queues down in Meribel Centre either. Meant to cool down a bit next week but I'm heading back tomorrow.

May I ask a question? Coming to the 3Vs and staying in Meribel in a fortnight’s time. One of the family won’t be skiing after surgery. I read a lot about pedestrian passes, walks etc. and I know the ligne D bus links Chaudanne to Mottaret.

My question is: what is the ‘smart’ way for them to join the rest of us for lunch, drinks etc during the day? I suppose the choice is for them to come up a lift and meet at the top, or to find somewhere at valley level (Chaudanne or Mottaret). Pedestrian passes seem quite dear?

TIA for any ideas/ advice.

From my perspective it’s the first time in the 3Vs since 2001 (the last of about five trips, the first in 1995) and I am so looking forward to it. A few pistes seem to have changed colour (and name e.g. Jockeys/ Eclipse) and I am sure a lot of lifts are bigger, faster etc, but the area looks very similar.

Pizzeria Du Mottaret, Clos St Bernard and Le Blanchot are our choice meeting spots with non-skiers. Meeting at mountain restaurants requires some engagement by the non-skier and can be quite intimidating.

Castors down at Chaudanne is another stop to consider.
They could also get over to Courchevel and meet you in 1850 or 1300 using the pedestrian pass quite easily.

A weeks pedestrian pass is about 90 euros. A single ride on a lift is about 12 euros. So if they are only using the lifts to come to lunch on a few days then cheaper to just buy single lifts. If they want to use it for some sightseeing and walking too then worth getting a weeks pass.

Getting to 1300 and back would require 8 lifts, so more than a weekly pass!

Mountain restaurants with great views that don't need too much walking for the non-skier might include those at the top of Saulire Express or Pas du Lac bubbles. I think the first is expensive, the second a bit cheaper. With a short walk there is one near the top of the Rhodos bubble.

Le Clos Bernard takes a bit of finding, and might be too long a walk for someone with recent surgery.

By bus, Mottaret centre is a good call, or the Rond-Point above Meribel.

Thanks for all those restaurant suggestions, very welcome. Our non-skier is a good walker (plus has skied a lot in the past) so may well be up for a mountain top outing.

May I ask a separate question? I recall that back in the day it was quite fiddly to connect from the Meribel valley to get quickly to VT. Clearly the route starts with Cote Brune lift. At the top - is is possible to ski across and join the Red (Chardons) between the VT 4 and VT 5 lifts - or is the shape of the ground such that you have to go down Pluviometre? It’s one of those things where the piste map is causing a bit of confusion!

Yes, you just stay high left all the way off Cote Brune. There's usually a bit of punting involved for the average skier to get to the start of Pluviometre but as you reach it there is a path on the left that continues to Chardons and the bottom (easy) half of Goitschel. It's usually my preferred way of getting to VT.

Or if you only want to get to the lower end of VT, including most of the lifts, you can avoid that flat bit by taking Mont de la Chambre, and cutting left after the restaurant onto he boulevard that cuts across to the foot of Pluviometre then into VT
