Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is there likely to be much of a queue at Les Allues for the Gondola up to Meribel during the last week in Feb ?

Can someone advise on the quickest way form Val Thorens over to the top of Saulire (and back again I guess). Thanks

Go up either Pionniers or Plein Sud depending on your location in Val Thorens, then up the 3 Vallées chair.

Ski down the long blue (Lac de La Chambre) either (1) all the way to Mottaret, the piste becomes Mures Rouges then Ours and is quite flat - not fun on a board but OK to ski - or (2) only to the Plan des Mains chair, riding it up then skiing down Sittelle and Martre to Mottaret.

Then take the Pas du lac gondola up. It doesn't go all the way to the very top of Saulire but accesses every piste except the couloirs (Grand Couloir, Couloir Tournier).

On the way back: Niverolle/Marcassin then Aigle down to Mottaret, the Platières gondola followed by a short ski down to the Côté Brune gondola, and you then have a few options to ski down to Val Thorens from Mont de la Chambre.

How rammed is Orelle / Val Thorens likely to be this Sunday, starting from Orelle?

I know visiting on a weekday would probably be better from there but I might not have a choice.

Just arrived in meribel. Rained all the way from gva, heavy snow in resort, a good 5cm on the roads,
Maybe 10cm now I’ve had to park and walk around a bit!!

About 10cm max of fresh today around Courchevel (sadly it precipitated much harder in the valleys than up the hill - we were down in Chambery last night for a lycée open evening with '#1 son' and it was tipping it down with rain all the way back to halfway between Albertville & Moutiers...).

Very pleasant on the piste first thing - Jean Blanc was in perfect condition - groomed with the fresh on top (just missing another 20/30cms...).
Off piste lower angled stuff was best - enough fresh to float around over the old tracks underneath.
Up high was less good - cable car was out of action this morning for an electrical fault, and the couloirs (and anything steeper and with old tracks) need more snow to make a difference - a bit rattly under the layer of fresh...

Yep was pretty nice around Courchevel today, not too busy either. Probably 5-10cm on average across the valley.

Visibility was tough after about 2pm though.

Nice snow in places, stony and polished in others!

I didn’t bring my wide skis deliberately to ensure a massive dump so disappointed it’s not worked!

very nice light snow in Speedball bowl above Mottaret, nice but a tiny bit crusty on sunny side in Les Menuires below Cherferie lift. Pea soup in the morning leaving home but quickly cleared. Fab day

@skimottaret, you weren’t over val T way this afternoon were you? Saw a tall chap with a water bottle on his hip but don’t think the boots were yours as bright yellow I think.

Lovely snow over Val T way but so so busy pistes. Non of the polished sections that I’ve found lower down!

Freeride champs were running, watched a snowboard run then as we skied around the back saw the ladies boot packing up to the top!

Define "crowded".

It will be less crowded than the 4 weeks after so don't sweat it and enjoy.

@Jack_nice,
We stayed in Les Allues about 10-12 days ago which the Brides Les Bains Gondola comes through and the cabins were rarely full though most were occupied even at peak morning times so I'd guess there wasn't much of a queue at the bottom.

Light snow this morning, maybe 1cm at 1450m.

Surprised by how stony some of the runs are above 1800m down considering the 90cm that fell last week! Cave de Creux and Mur as two examples with thin snow and stones. No snowmaking to build the base early season I’d assume.

yes I noticed a few stones on my way back yesterday afternoon on Bellecote in 1850. Trying to decide where to head today with these conditions, maybe I’ll just hang around the trees in 1850.

The top was lively this morning. Suisse had been bashed so circuited that twice with good visibility above the cloud. Then did ParkCity and the cloud had come up with zero visibility. So we called it a day and headed back to collect the ladies from their ski school.

Ended up with about 15cm or so as expected, about to go and get fist tracks over the back of 1650. Enjoy it everyone!

Possibility for another 5-10 Friday.

Just spent the morning around 1850 and 1650. If anyone knows a single piste that has been bashed please let me know. The sky is blue the sun is out, but I haven’t found anything above a green that has been bashed and the moguls are forming as you watch from a chairlift.

If it snows overnight on top of pistes that have been previously been groomed the previous evening then those pistes will usually not be groomed in the morning. The only exception is green pistes for beginners, there simply isn't the resource to do everything else in the morning. Enjoy the hero snow!

@jamescollings, on the 3v app you can filter by groomed pistes. But as said above 15cm falling after pisting won’t get pisted in the daytime.

Enjoy the new snow!!

Pretty much all the pistes we’ve been on in Val Thorens today have had a thick layer of - now chopped up and mogulled - snow. But it’s so soft / easy to slice right through it hasn’t been a problem for our group’s dodgy technique. Been pretty joyful in fact.

Cool Cool Cool Fantastic day, first lifts, barely skied on piste at all until it was time to come home. Isn’t it great when the forecasts underestimate the expected snow depth Very Happy . Around 12 inches up at Tougnete/Roc de 3 Marches.

Probably the best day skiing I’ve had. Certainly of the last 3 weeks of this trip.

I spent the morning from the first lofts lapping the back of 1650, up from the Grangets lift and towards Chanrossa. Not another soul until about 10am as everyone was heading down towards Ariondaz. There was fresh off piste to be had all day. A couple of wipeouts but was good fun.

For anyone interested there is still many many fresh tracks to be had over there, it seems to be a forgotten little corner of 3V.

I’ll be there again first thing tomorrow morning.

It actually ended up snowing most of today, woke up to light snow which turned into moderate from around 11-3.

Was nice playing around in the fresh snow but visibility wasn’t great at times.

Finally cleared around 4pm which made for a nice final run back.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

The posted should be in superb condition for the next week or so.

I was skiing yesterday. The piste conditions were pretty good, with just a few icy patches on the popular runs. I spent at least half the day skiing off-piste (mostly on the Saint-Martin / Les Menuires side). I even skied nearly untouched off-piste all the way down to Saint-Marcel, then took the bus to Saint-Martin. I can’t wait to ski again today!

Morning all. We have the dreaded GCSE skiing practical to film for my daughter this half term. Anyone on the ground know if there are any public access slalom runs in the 3v this season.

If memory serves there used to be one in 1850 under the Plantrey chairlift, not sure if that is still there this season.

Thanks.

Yes there is sometimes public gates in the slalom park under Plantrey, accessed by going up the Epicea drag. Never very clear which ones are the public ones and which are reserved for training groups though.

Best option is at the top of the main 1850 stade. Go into the black Moncler start hut next to the top of double drag. Scan your lift pass it will give you access to a GS course with timing.

The Meribel dual slalom has not been set up at all this season. Probably will be in half term but the course is usually poor.
