@silentice, the conditions look pretty much perfect. Heading over to the Les Gets bowl is a good shout. The south facing blues (Campanule, Reine de pres) will be great first thing. Tulip opposite will be great mid morning onwards (the top 50m is likely sheet ice, but after that it’s great, so just side slip that part). It used to be graded a red, but it’s a stunning run. Best value lunch is probably best to head back up on the Nauchets express and head down to the Cry area by the white cross. The Yeti Cafe does a baguette and chips for a reasonable price.
If you’re feeling up for it, the reds next to the Nauchets are worth a go in the afternoon

Obviously too late now, but generally if you look at the live piste map outside of opening hours it will show the previously/expected open slopes in purple, marked as "in preparation" rather than red "closed". At what point in time any given piste might change overnight from one to the other I could not say though.

Just read that Roc d'Enfer (St Jean D'Aulp) has been placed into receivership. The municipality has six months to get back on its feet. Such a great little resort. We've been here for the past week and really enjoyed it. Great snow conditions too.

Seems that I was wrong on this, it's only the lifts that are so marked, not the pistes themselves.

Argh. Is it a climate or management issue? 38 euros a day is a mighty fair rack rate.

"On Tuesday 27 January, the Thonon-les-Bains commercial court ended the company’s protection procedure and put the Roc d’Enfer ski resort into formal financial restructuring.
The court said the resort can keep operating until 28 August 2026 while its situation is reviewed.
According to someone close to the case, this is a last-minute delay to stop the resort closing during the winter season. However, they say the situation is already beyond saving, and the resort is likely to be shut down and liquidated in the summer."

Very Upsetting, it's my local resort, and the tour is exceptional skiing when it's open. Also useful in the summer for climbing the Roc d'Enfer

Yes - it’s really sad … it’s a lovely resort but, unfortunately, the masses will always be attracted to extensive areas with linked infrastructure, high terrain, good snowmaking facilities and convenience. Must be gut-wrenching for local businesses and those that have invested in apartments and chalets in StJ.

What we've seen around Chatel is that the smaller lift companies (La Chapelle d'Abondance & Torgon) get bought out by the bigger ones. Is it likely that Morzine might buy SJdA, or does the lack of connection to bigger areas means it is doomed?

There were once plans to link with Les Gets at the Col d'Encrenaz, however this never actually happened. I can't see any other resort buying SJdA, it's too isolated. The La Chevrerie Sector is completely out of money, and if that fails, then the main appeal of SJdA with the tour du roc disappears, and it will eventually die. Unfortunately, I don't see a way out of this for the resort. It will probably have a similar fate to the Col de Corbier resort, which shut 10 years ago. I plan on skiing it as much as possible this winter

There was some sense in Châtel running the torgon lifts as it linked a fairly big ski area together. The espace liberté is now big enough on it's own to sustain interest for a day or two without any need to give lift pass money to the wider pds.
I can't see the same argument applying to sjda and Morzine, unfortunately, though the same "climate issue"* hasn't seemed very far away from la chapelle/torgon this and last season.
A friend of mine, who lives in champery, was recently determined to ski sjda and worked out an itinerary. However the bus that was scheduled to take him there (possibly from ardents?) never came and he ended up skiing back.
*When I mentioned the unmentionable on the main weather thread I was told to go away and start a specific thread on it. I guess people excitedly chatting about their holidays don't like to acknowledge reality.

Double Chery weekend - wish I had enjoyed the main LG area ahead of the upcoming hols though. I also missed the opportunity of skiing down to Perrières from the top: lack of time on Sat morning (guess I was too slow skinning up), and lack of decent snow was I told on Sun midday (after the kid's race).
But what's the exact route? I thought heading to Caly then decide depending on bus times, but it looks like one has to cut shorter to avoid the sprawling village development, and cross less routes.

Actually hoping to try out SJdA this season, the map seems to imply a tour is possible.
We'd likely start from La Chevrerie rather than SJdA.
But which is better: clockwise or anticlockwise?

Heading to Les Gets for the HT (yes, I know!! ) and I’m looking for some options for lunch (after 12:00 pm not at 11.00 am when the ski schools make pause if that plays a role) and maybe dinner.
Nothing fancy — not fine-dining or shiki-miki restaurants — more like pizzerias, bars, casual spots.
Important: they need to be accessible without lifts, gondolas, etc.
I could open a separate thread, but that seems a bit much just for Les Gets. There’s already one for Châtel, so maybe the admin could rename it to “Eating Suggestions in PDS”?
Otherwise, I’d be very grateful for any ideas or recommendations!

Terrible … in fact, I wouldn’t bother. Icy, stones everywhere, cloudy skies and restaurants that serve old wine and smelly cheese. Worse than a gulag. Yours, Victor M.

@turms2, Looks like the freezing level's varying around 1500, so while it might be raining at village level it should be snowing at any altitude you'll be bothered about. I'm seeing perhaps 40-50cm in the 48hrs from Tuesday night, then more from Friday.

It tends to snow lower than the freezing level and vast majority of the skiing happens above 1500m. There is currently a good base and this will be a nice top up for our arrival on 14th
We plan to hang out at Super Châtel sector to avoid the craziness and traffic of holiday crowds - lunches are booked. Might venture to Linga outside rush hour when it’s quiet around there.

Super Châtel, torgon and chapelle were really great (and empty) today, but the latter two were near their limit for snow cover.
I respectfully disagree with the "vast majority" of the skiing being above 1500. It's about 60/40. Braitaz, for example is 1400-1800m. Fouilleuse is 1300-1800m
The altitude of the PDS like everywhere else, is over-reported. The lifts don't go up to the summits of the hills. Avoriaz gets nowhere near the specified 2466m.
At busy times, I really can't be arsed with the extra 200m ish that you get at plaine dranse and Avoriaz, especially when there's no snow further down the valley and the crowds are even worse.
I'm with turms. The snow/rain levels will be critical in the next few days.
