Any recommendations for Hotels in any of the main Les Arcs stations , prefer a proper hotel with a restaurant and bar rather than one of those appartment blocks with a manned reception, and do any particular stations have more going on by way of apres ski / evening bar activity .
|
I'm sure some recommendations will pop up, but does it have to be Les Arcs? There are very few hotels as you describe there. I have the Aiguille Grive in 1800 in mind (quite small), the Taj-i-Maj in 2000 (expensive!), and La Cachette in 1600 (very little après ski). I might be missing a few (there used to be a Mercure, no longer finding it though?).
Val d'Isère is much better when it comes to hotels, and Val d'Isère hotels come at various price points. La Galise, for example, is pretty good value.
Or you could find hotels in Bourg Saint Maurice if you don't mind riding the funicular (but personally, I would mind).

@balso, just back from Val Thorens and 3 valleys , and about to head off to Tignes , so Paradiski was an option for a change next year , but it may well prove to be a fruitless search for that kind of hotel . so other resorts might come into effect .

The Hotel du Golf in Arc 1800 (which is the largest station with the most apres) is pretty good and has a bar and restaurant.

I had it in mind but isn't it an all-inclusive "club"-style hotel? Not sure this is the type @gwatts10 is looking for, but if so, then sure!

Hi everyone,
Looks like we have finally made our choice of Les Arcs 1800 for our family ski holiday in Easter hols (26/3 to 2/4). Because its out of the normal Sat to Sat holidays, we need to go private for ski lessons for our kids. Does anyone have any recommendations, realise we have left it late, so trying to find the best options we can.
Also, looking at Jam Transfers from Geneva and they seem to be reasonably priced for private in relation to others. Has anyone used them before?

@wyattjnr we have used Supreme Ski for private group lessons for the kids for the last couple of years and again this year. The lads love the instructors and they always do fun things with them (snow parks etc)

Does anyone have any recommendations for ski hire in 1950? Ski Republic seem cheap, but are they cheap for a reason? Intersport are a bit more expensive, but is the kit better quality?
I'll be hiring skis and boots for two 15 year old boys. One's a very good skier, the other only has a couple of weeks under his belt, but show appears more important that go to them both so reasonably new kit is important......

@lower, Although an owner in 1950 for over 20 years, I've never hired as I have my own gear. However, if you're happy to go up to 2000 (easy on the short Cabriolet gondola), Equilibres regularly gets good reviews.

10-15 fresh at the top on the black down from the Aiguille Rouge this morning. Sublime. Worth being on the first cable car and not hanging around before dropping in.

So after biting the bullet after far too much procrastination to be healthy, we got the flights to Geneva and intend to stay in Les Arcs 1800.
Is there a way of getting a bus between 1800 and 1950/2000? From the timetables it only seems to be between 1600 and 1950/2000?

quicker to ski from 1800 to 2000. go up the transarc and ski down to arc 2000. Theres a very easy blue down. If it's outside lift opening times then youll take about an hour or so by bus.

So when he gets hammered in folie douce and misses the last lift he can get home. That is if the passengers on the 1600-2000 bus I was on when arriving were anything to go by

I remember that year well, we were probably in resort at the same time as you. Pretty much no snow on the 1600/1800/Vallandry side of the resort other than a few strips of snow back to the resort centres. Arc 2000 did offer some skiing, but it was very warm so we didn't bother making the effort to get over there as I'd already skied a lot that winter. Instead we had a nice time with a couple of days in Annecy, exploring the Tarentaise, a bit of walking in the warm weather around Arc 1800.
But that season was exceptional. I've skied a lot in Les Arcs at Easter, and later, and 2011 was the only time that snow coverage was so poor. I'd say the chances of you being able to enjoy decent conditions and pleasant weather is reasonably high. No guarantees of course, but the second half of April for the last three years has brought a lot of fresh snow and wonderful skiing conditions. That's always nice, and a lovely bonus at the end of the winter.

@rob@rar, yeah the only run back to Vallandry was via Peisey - Foret was all mud! 1800 was a thin strip of ice which was awful. We did a few walks and looked around the old villages. I'm sure we will get some decent skiing in, also hoping there will be some snow up at XC area so boy can take me for my annual humiliation

There best be snow. We'll be there that week. We've been there on the 4th of April a couple if times, and the snow has always been fine. A bit slushy down low, but manageable for a home run.

There have been a few years where late in the season the snow has been poor and tiny ribbons exist to get you back to the resort, but I've always been able to ski, even on the last day of the season.

Me too. I've mentioned before having to take skis off and walk over the mud to get to the Arpette chair. Left a couple of days early as I had a wedding celebration to get to on the Saturday in Lytham. Didn't feel I was missing much regarding the skiing.

I am also booked 4-11 April staying in Vallandry. I have been out to Vallandry first or second week of April the last two years. The snow has been good in LA as a whole. Foret only closed a couple of days (I was stayed in Hotel Le Foret). Vallandry area was worst I had seen two years ago, with lots of closed sections but you could always ski back. And it dumped, so got a day off piste!

Solo trip to Les Arcs Feb 12 to Feb 16. Staying in Hotel Arolla in BSM. First time to Les Arcs, looking forward to the expansive blue runs, maybe a few reds. For me skiing is something to do on the mountain between hot cocoa and beers. LOL. Cannot wait, hoping for bluebird days. I'll report back on how things are.

@pfreet, Excactly my husbands attitude to skiing, too. I have to admit, hes onto something.
Finally booked our train reservations yesterday. They've taken an age to go live. I booked myself onto the 0656 train out of Paris on the Saturday. Gets me into BSM at 1148. I've got half a day skiing on my Essentials pass from 1230, so that timing should work really well by the time I've got the funicular up and changed into my boots.
Mr. O and the kids are booked on the 1130 out of Paris, and will taxi up to 1800. I'll meet them at the hotel. I've just booked Tarantaise taxi for them on the way up and all of us on the return.
I'm going to replace my poles, but am considering doing it in resort now. Thought I might pop into one of the shops in 1600 upon arrival. I'm not looking for anything fancy. Any recommendations? It's Easter so hopefully there'll be some sales on.

If I was replacing my poles, I would now get ones that are adjustable....as the thinking on Pole Length is changing with modern technique....and even with different terrain (shorter poles in bumps).
At the hire shop in Tignes Lac, they rented adjustable poles (I think by Gripron), which is eminently sensible, as it saves having stocks at every length. If this is the same in Les Arcs, they might sell you a pair of their rental poles at a discount.

Busy on the slopes today but lovely conditions. Sunny all morning and patchy cloud in the afternoon. Got stuck at the pinch point under 1950 for what felt like eternity. Vallandry area much quieter and where we spent most of the day. That said, there were some slight bare patches down there this afternoon after they'd been scraped off by the crowds.
Found a new favourite run though, the blue from Bois de L'Ours and onto Grand Melezes and down into 1800. Especially the top section is absolutely wonderful. Smooth, fast, rolling, deserted at the time we did it. Ripping down it in the early evening sunshine is the stuff dreams are made of.
