@kb36, yes, and surprising. It had been assumed that the owner, Evi, had allowed the place to get run down, because she was so loaded that she no longer cared about making big profits.

While you would expect the Hinterhagalm to be raking in money given its a building they own outright and it has a large number of customers for 16 weeks in winter who are happy to keep buying drinks, the other side of things is the hotel and that can bleed cash at a profuse rate if they got the business model wrong and were unable to fill enough rooms for enough of the year to break even. I suspect they were running a loss on the hotel due to the extensive borrowing they likely needed to build it, and the profit from the alm was not enough to keep the business as a whole afloat.

@ousekjarr, coupled with which is the sad reality that the Alm is a shadow of its former self, due to lack of investment (and Evi’s deluded predilection for screeching “romantic love songs” in her guttural, off-key tones). Anyone who remembers it in those halcyon days of the Flamingos, and the much-loved Josef Solar, can’t help but feel regret. The throngs of après-skiers, who used to fill the place every evening now go to the Soul House, the Off-Piste Bar, the Spitzbub, Bauers, and Burgi’s. In its heyday it was netting eye-watering profits, but now it can’t be covering its overheads.
Perhaps a phoenix will rise from the ashes. The potential is still there.

Alternatively, maybe the building has protected status and has been identified to need €1.5M of stabilisation work to be completed before the end of 2026, and the response of the company has been that they cannot afford it. In which scenario, it is a case of digging for gold and finding a yawning chasm which swallows the entire wealth of the investors.

the bankruptcy has been filed by one of the creditors , the company itself hasn't, there won't be any decision until late May, the 3.8 million could include the mortgage, a bit of speculation the mortgage could be a result of the refurbishment. The death of her son had a big impact on Evi, Seppi was a very nice guy and focused on the hotel and his amazing restaurant.
Bankruptcy Filing – Hotel Hinterhag BetriebsGmbH & Co KG
The Alpenländische Kreditorenverband (AKV) has announced that insolvency (bankruptcy/Konkurs) proceedings have been opened against, Hotel Hinterhag BetriebsGmbH & Co KG (FN 113222d) at the Landesgericht Salzburg (Salzburg Regional Court), following an application by a creditor. The company's registered address is Hinterhagweg 43, 5753 Saalbach.
Key Dates & Details
Opening date:3 March 2026
Claims registration deadline: 13 May 2026
Insolvency administrator (Masseverwalterin): Dr. Andrea Fruhstorfer, Rechtsanwältin, 5020 Salzburg
Claims examination hearing (Prüfungstagsatzung): 27 May 2026
The Business:
The company operates the 4-star "Art & Ski-In Hotel" (formerly known as "Kunsthotel Hinterhag") with approximately 100 beds. Also attached are a café-restaurant, the ski hut "Hinterhag Alm" (with over 100 seats), and a guest transport service. It is primarily a winter-season business. The unlimited liability partner is Hotel Hinterhag Betriebs GmbH (FN 036797p).
Financial Situation:
The exact total liabilities cannot yet be confirmed, but the balance sheet as of 30 November 2024 shows liabilities of approximately €3.8 million. The number of affected creditors and employees is not yet known, and the causes of insolvency are still to be investigated by the appointed administrator.
Cause of Filing:
Since the proceedings were initiated by a creditor rather than by the company itself, no detailed information about the causes of the insolvency or the full financial situation is currently available.
In summary:
This is a very recent insolvency — opened just yesterday (3 March 2026). The proceedings are at an early stage, and the full picture of liabilities, creditors, and causes will emerge as the administrator begins their investigation. I

Just finished an enjoyable week skiing in the area, enjoying some spring sunshine on the hotel spa terrace. I’ll get round to writing a proper trip report at some point. First time there and it really fit the bill for our group of strong intermediates and a once reasonably advanced me.
It’s a great place for strong intermediates and above. I didn’t find there was much in it grading wise between the blues and reds. By the afternoon things got more challenging but I actually enjoyed charging through the chopped up snow and slush later in the day.
We stayed in Hinterglemm which had plenty for us and might even be the better base. Also worth saying the short transfer is a big plus after a few three hour plus slogs getting to French resorts.

I've just tweaked my post on getting to Saalbach, the recommendation from @ribblevalleyblue, to use taxisalzburg24 is turning out to be a good one. I thought we should try Snowcamp and while it was quicker than the public bus there are no set times, unlike the shuttle service, we went on a Sunday and had to wait over an hour for an other incoming passenger who we dropped of on route, they clearly consolidate (who can blame them) using them on a Saturday would be better, more likely to have more people heading to Zell and Saalbach, they quote and average waiting time at the airport of 40 minutes.
Someone I know normally uses the shuttle, they land at 11.30 too late for the 12.00 and the next is 14.00, so an extra €38 compared to the shuttle seems good value for a private transfer, there are two of them coming our for a long weekend.

About time too. The Reiterkogelbahn is showing its age, and it’s always seemed strange that it doesn’t go all the way to the summit.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bernkogelbahn similarly gets an extension to the top in the next few years. as the Bernkogel 6er chairlift has been coming under pressure since the top of the mountain became used as a primary nursery area.

Booked an apartment in Hinterglemm, western side of town for 2027. Does anyone have English apeaking children's (11/14) ski school recommendations?
The resort website really doesn't make life easy as they like to treat everything as "Saalbach-Hinterglemm" so you get all ski schools, even the ones that meet down the road in Saalbach, which wouldn't be especially convenient!

@Mjit I had a fab week there at half term this year. My daughter (14) had a couple of lessons with Penhab and I came along. These were private but not massively expensive and very good, we learned loads. They messed up our first appointment (very busy and a smallish operation) and immediately fessed up, rebooked with the main guy Reini and gave us a discount.
They're: https://www.penhab.at/skischule/
Group lessons will be cheaper but to be honest I've given up on those as there are always too many pupils to really be very useful. I haven't tried groups at all in Saalbach - others may have different experiences, my times with groups have been in France/Italy.

@Mjit, more than half of the instructors are likely to be Dutch, so lessons in English are no problem. There won't be English-only groups, but the instructor will probably switch between German, Dutch and English as needed.
Depending on exactly where you are in Hinterglemm will determine the closest ski school. If you're by the new bus station then taking the Bergfriedlift will get you to the Ubahn where Snow&Fun are the main school. If you're closer to Reiterkogel, Ski Total are probably easier. If by the Zwolferkogel, then Active.

Here’s a first: at the top of the Kohlmais this morning I was recognised as a fellow-Snowhead by the sticker on my helmet.
Snowhead Bryceski turned out to be not only a member of this select forum, but also the SCGB rep/ski guide for this week. As he had no punters and was skiing solo, we naturally joined forces and guided each other around the Glemm valley. Having said that, I found his après-ski guiding in the Xandlstadl the most useful.
A surprise treat was that we encountered a ski testing event at Hochalm: four manufacturers (Völkl, Faction, Head, Van Deer) were offering their wares for a free test, an offer that was hard to refuse, so we took some brand new Völkls and Heads for a spin on the Spieleck piste. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to do more - I’d like to have tried the Van Deers.

Just reporting that last night we had a decent dump of several inches of snow (at village height - more at altitude), and it continued snowing on and off during the day. It’s freezing hard tonight so tomorrow should be good. The valley is white over again.
I spoke to the SCGB rep (Snowhead “Bryceski”) earlier, and he told me that he’d been skiing the off-piste for most of the day, going over to Fieberbrunn and back.
I didn’t ski today - went down to Zell am See, which was still looking distinctly green in the valley bottom. That 1,000 feet or so of altitude difference makes quite a difference. Clearly it had been raining down in Zell whilst it was snowing in Saalbach.

@snorks, you may have heard or read something that I haven’t, but why do you say “half the resort is closing this weekend “? It’s news to me!
And yes, we’ve had a dump that would be impressive in December or January, but, with only 10 days of the season to go, it’s certainly exceptional and has transformed the springlike appearance of the valley to a winter wonderland. It’s been hammering down for a couple of days, and there’s apparently more to come. I haven’t been up the mountains yet, but I’m expecting half a meter of powder up there, maybe more. There must have been around 35 cm on the roof of my car earlier today, and it’s partially sheltered!

I had a quick look at some of the major hotels and they didn't seem to be taking bookings after this weekend, but your right probably lots still open if I'd looked properly.

@snorks, most years the ski area gets closed gradually - the south-facing side of the Glemm valley first, then the rest of it, leaving Schönleiten area and Leogang for the final week. This season appears to be different - everything is open until 6th April (which is an earlier closing date than usual).
But, there is now so much snow (with more to come) that, if only there were most tourists planning their holidays for April, and if it were possible to retain the staff, they might extend the season. Early April has always been one of my favourite times to ski in Saalbach - invariably there is new snow and few people around - and this season will apparently be no exception.

looks like saalbach season is over before its time due to the late snowfall shame. A problem for me this year is we came out first week of march and the warmth meant skiing was curtailed in the afternoons more so than other years though to be fair didnt affect our enjoyment of the area overall still our favorite area but mrs ski for fun is now saying she wants to come back next year in late jan and so we now have an impasse as I much prefer the longer daylight and sun rather than early dark nights and colder temps but on the upside could be that its only 10 months till our return , ho ho might have to compromise and come out twice .

Hey Saalbach fans, I've never visited so keen to address that in early March 2027. There'll be a fair few of us wanting to come, we are all mature skiers, a mix of first lift to last lift hoon around, onpiste, touring or off piste all depending on conditions and a few who are happy with shorter days and more chill out.
Can anyone recommend a few hotels to look at? Requirements would be very short (5 mins max) walk to lifts, wellness area, decent sized quiet rooms (ie not over a main road), half board with decent quality food and good reviews!

@kitenski, I've stayed in all of these (bar one I am due to stay in). Would recommend them all - all slightly different depending on exact needs etc. If I was choosing to stay in one again considering everything I think I'd choose Die Sonne but Kristiana is a brilliant choice at (when we stayed) a much lower price point. Kendler might become the winner but not stayed there yet.
https://www.hotel-sonne.at/en/ - does not meet 5 mins to lifts requirement but they do on demand shuttle to lifts for guests
https://www.kristiana.at/en/hotel-saalbach-hinterglemm/1-0.html - no pool, not sure if you need that in a wellness area. Does have Sauna.
https://glemmtalerhof.com/en - in Hinterglemm as opposed to Saalbach
Due to stay in Kendler in Jan 2027 which may also be worth a look.

@kitenski, Das Kholamis https://www.kohlmais.at/en/ bang opposite the lift station, all the apre bars within 5 minute walk
Eva Village very convenient in the centre of town, Bernkogel and Schattberg probably fall within teh 5 minute rule, to get the the Kholmais you walk into the underground garage and take the lift (the type with sliding doors)up an you are right by the chair lift less than 5, The Neuhaus opposite the Eva.
Kendler, easy to get to the Bernkogel lift, walk over to the Kholmais slope, SchattberXpress would be more than 5 minutes and would take longer going back, it's up hill.
Alpine Palace is due to be rebuilt this summer.
Das Zwölferhaus in Hinterglemm right by the 12er Kogel lift, though you will have a bit of a walk to get to other lifts.
Hotel Der Unterschwarzachhof, on the slopes in Hinterglemm easy to get to a number of lifts, you can ski over to a lift with doors and its a 8 minute walk to the Reiterkogel, it close to the Der Schwarzacher for Apre.
Glemtallerhoff, centre of Hinterglemm short walk to the Reiterkogel lift (new one being built), 4 minute walk to a sliding door lift which gets you to the Unterschwarzachbahn

The Adler Resort is right next to what will be a brand new high-speed 10-pers. gondola that is being built this summer (to replace the old red gondola) and which will go all the way to the top of Reiterkogel rather than just half-way up as the old gondola did. Alpine Palace is on the other side of this new gondola.

I don’t think I’ve heard any negative comments about any of the village-centre hotels in Saalbach. In the recent past people I’ve spoken to have been favourably impressed by the Kohlmais, the Kristiana, the Kendler, the Eva Village, and the Neuhaus. If I was going to plump for one, I’d go for the Hotel Kohlmais (which is next door to me) - for its location, food, views, and facilities.
