| Very quick trip report from last week. Stayed in the View hotel in Hinterglem, great hotel in great location with great food. Clear blue skies every day. Best apri was still in the Soul House in the village and the Panorama Alm on the hill. Voted best week ever for our 25 year running boys trip and was our second week to the area. Next time we return I think we will go back to Salbach. |
Good to hear recent feedback on the hotel. Staying there first week of March.

Thank you. Is last week of Feb good time to ski or too slushy? I am comparing to Dolomites where we usually stay and have more accomodation options.

@Grizwald, strangely, as Christmas the Soul House was actually quiet but nonetheless, wonderful reception from the staff and the food was fantastic when we stopped for lunch. I fear Saalbach may have set a new high bar for me, hoping La Plagne at Easter doesn't feel like a downgrade

@Specialman, I think it needs the live band to get it going, would be quiet without them.

Is there a best day for the Soulhouse? I've seen it packed out and jumping and also very quiet. And what days is Spacey doing Spitzbub?
We're coming the last week of February and hoping the conditions hold out, last year was unseasonably warm and we did look at going higher up in France this year... but god damn you Saalbach I can't quit you! So 15th year in a row it is!

@Specialman, and @JimboS, when Peter Thederan and his excellent Swedish band arrive, usually around the second or third week of January, the Soul House is arguably the best early evening après-ski venue in Saalbach.
Christmas is generally too early for après-ski.

We found that was the case. It was good in Bauer's and the place opposite it was always full, but the whole resort felt quiet so I'm guessing, like you say, January is when things start to get going.
I think we're looking at January next year, probably the week after NY, and I'd put money on us returning to saalbach-Hinterglemm.

 You know it makes sense.

@snorks, once the Swedish band are playing, the Soul House is very popular, but they do have one day off per week, which might explain why you’ve seen it quiet.
Spacey does his party at Spitzbub on Monday and Thursday 5.00-8.00pm
Last season was unusually mild, right across the Alps.

Getting in the mood for our upcoming trip as just got our skis down out of the loft, sharpened the edges and waxed both pairs ready for our trip in 2 weeks for half term.
Really looking forward to it, unfortunately we come at this time due to not wanting to take the kids out of school. Me and the wife love our apres and before the kids we had many great nights in the ski circus apres bars. Last year we stayed in Hinterglemm and managed a few nights in the Goastall with the kids staying preoccupied sliding up and down the slope in the snow right by the seating area which meant they didnt get bored. This year we are staying in Saalbach at the top of the main street just passed the Hotel Kendler. The Soul House looks like exactly the type of place we will like especially with the live band. I think the soul house might be similar but not sure - can the Kids play in the snow outside while we watch the band? Do they (the band) also play outside? and what days of the week are they on?

I think La Plagne will just feel different rather than better or worse. It’s been a decade since I last skied there and by all accounts the flow has improved a lot since then with newer lifts and better links. I stayed in 1800 which felt a bit inconvenient at the start and end of the ski day for getting around, but it’s a huge area and you really get that sense of travel, especially heading over towards Les Arcs. The scenery is properly big mountain and overall I’d describe it as functional. You might miss the connected together, high mileage routes and natural flow that Saalbach Hinterglemm does so well.
Conversely it’s been a long time since I skied in Austria at all, Saalbach itself was back in 2004, with my last Austrian trip being Obergurgl in 2017, so I suspect part of it is simply that both places will feel quite different to how I remember them!

@Specialman, IMHO I would say week 3 or 4 of Jan is the best in Saalbach, apres is in full swing, busy enough to have a great atmosphere but not too busy

@daveqpr, yes, the Soul House will be suitable. The après-ski party takes place outside, with the band playing from a large, enclosed stage, and there is plenty of scope for your kids to mess about in the snow to one side.
The band play every evening except one - their evening off; but not very helpfully I don’t know which evening that is.

@tatmanstours, that's great info thanks - straight from the horses mouth so to speak!
Is the food good there for an evening meal? I Was thinking of booking a table there for the Sunday night that we are there (15/02), also we normally get a takeaway pizza for the 1st Saturday night due to unpacking etc. I know there are a few Pizza places in town - which is best for a take away?

@daveqpr, where are you staying?
If you’re towards Jaursen, then Mangia is the best.
In town Napoli is good we eat there 3/4 times a season
Some people I skied with the other week had a takeaway from La Trattoria and said it was as good as the one they eat at Napoli.
Haven’t eaten at the Soul House fora couple of seasons, the food was good Tatmantours maybe more up to date.
If you’re going for the are at the Soul House, pay for your drinks as you go a long.

@radar, thanks - we are staying at the top end of Saalbach literally just past the tunnel so probably looks like Napoli would be best for an on foot take out.
Noted about pay as you go at Soul House - that's what we normally do just in case we get carried away!
Hopefully it looks like the snow will get a small top up between now and the 14th and hopefully stay cool too.

@daveqpr, the Soul House is generally good for evening meals in a nice atmosphere - the spare ribs and burgers being very popular.
My recommendation for pizzas (including takeaway) has to be Napoli.

Will the kids like the bowling at Bobbys Pub ? is it like normal 10 pin bowling or more like skittles? do you have to book a lane in advance

@daveqpr, more like normal 10 pin bowling. I would book it with Mario Haberl (Bobby’s son, who now runs the bar). He is normally working behind the bar. Or his partner, Jelena Ivkic.

I know the restaurant has been mentioned previously but has anyone stayed at Hotel Mitterer in Saalbach centre? Seems pretty reasonable from the website and reviews but I wonder if it might be a little noisy through the night, being on the main street

@toyah807, I was thinking only a few days ago that you wouldn’t want a room at the front, overlooking the street. The Hotel Mitterer is bang opposite the Taverne nightclub, where you get groups of smokers congregating and talking in loud voices until late.

I'm thinking about a self-catered trip to Saalbach/Hinterglemm next winter with ~10 friends (have never been). This year in France we got meals delivered by a local caterer chap that just needed heating up, and it worked pretty well. Does anyone know if there's an equivalent in Saalbach/Hinterglemm, or somewhere traiteur-style? My google skills have not supplied anything... I note the pizza recommendation above, but I'm not sure even I could do that every night . Obviously we can cook, and restaurants exist, we're just lazy! Thanks!

There's nowhere that does a delivery service, not even pizzas .
The closest would be ready meals from Billa or Mpreis. They also do premarinated meal and ribs.
Can highly recommend frozen apple cake from Mpreis.

Just back from 5dayz in saalbach. 2nd of the season and highly recommend it as a destination for anyone thinking about going. Super quick lift system. Loads of great mountain huts for lunch znd last run beers on way down. Great variety of lively in village apres bars. Decent restaurants in village. Even though it hasn't snowed in a while piste conditions in morning were epic , on the milder days they were cutting up by 2ish. Was involved in a bad collision with a skier(his fault) and the whole process of first aid on piste and police report and getting stitched up was seamless.
I met up with and was kindly invited to go boarding and apre drinks with local SHead Richard Tatman and friends which was greatly appreciated. Got to learn a lot about the area and the better places to visit. Witnessed the legendary Spacey in Spitzbub bar among other things. Still only covered half of the area in that time. So there is lots to see and do there . Get booking.....

Sorry to ask more questions which relate to next season but any local knowledge of Pension Seighof? Reviews look excellent and the price is very good. Happy to juggle the location issue with a mix of skiing back via Piste 86, buses and the Westernstadl track and using buses or hotel shuttle in the morning but wondering how a small group would fit in around what looks to be a customer base of mainly families. We aren't exactly crazy, a group of 8 to 10 friends mainly upwards of 50, but still prone to volume being slightly higher after a few drinks. Or would places be fairly chilled, given that its S/H? A January trip so not in many school holidays
