Thanks for the replies. Booked The View Hotel in Hinterglem, very good price with SunWeb HB. Location looks ideal.

Here is the annual how to get to Saalbach from Salzburg Airport post, bit longer this year!

Really useful guide. If I'm following things correctly public bus or train from Salzburg then a change in the Zell area to another bus or taxi to get to Saalbach? Any experiences with how lon this takes?
We're staying just by the Reiterkogel lift. A happy medium in the face of it might be the snowcamps option but hiring a car is cheaper but seems a shame to just have it parked up for a week.

@Grizwald, we spent the week at The View last week. I can confirm its a lovely hotel, very friendly hosts, good ski room, spotlessly clean and the food was very good. Great location in Hinterglemm - enjoy!

We were looking at the Saalbach or Val Gardena areas in the end but The View looks to be a really good standard of hotel and we paid just over £1100 pp when considering the lift pass is over €400 we couldn't get anything close for a similar standard of accommodation.
It's been a while since I've skiied in Austria last time was Sölden, previously skiied Kitzbuhel too so looking forward to seeing the Wilder Kaiser range again and some Tiroler Gröstl!

Skied in Fieberbrunn today, lovely conditiobs. I didn't go over to Saalbach, just stayed in Fieberbrunn, as my ribs were still sore after Sunday's fall.
They really do need to sort out their piste grading though. The three main runs I skied today ( a few times each) were 102 (blue), 107(blue), and 105 (red). The hardest of those three was definitely 107, with not much to choose between 102 & 105. Both quite easy blue standard, but one marked as red.

@Grizwald, you change from the 260 to the 680 at Maishofen .
Use https://salzburg-verkehr.at/en/ to plan your journey, the connection times vary.As you are staying near the Reiterkogel the bus stop is Hinterglemm Busterminal.
A favour, you don't need to quote my post, the question was clear enough

@Grizwald, we hired a car from the airport, this works best for us and generally works out the same cost as transfers. An alternative is the bus from the airport which heads towards zell am see, you change at Maishofen then get the bus up the valley to Saalbach/hinterglemm. Note - this is free with the guest mobility card but you need to ask the hotel to send you these ( you get a qr code), this covers free transport in the salzburger district including trains, for the duration of your stay. For the hotel We paid a very similar amount and came to the same conclusion - with the lift pass it became good value relatively. We have been going to this area the last 20 years and it is becoming expensive! That said, the reinvestment is impressive - you will struggle to find a better lift infrastructure in the Alps

@Grizwald, Forgot to mention -if you do hire a car you need to consider the parking costs - The View has spaces in the underground car park at the reiterkogl but its 20 euros a night

@summerseat, @Grizwald, several years ago I parked in the Schonleiten car park for the week at no cost, and with no issue. Officially the car park is only open 0800-1800 and is free for those using the lift, but in reality there's no-one watching for overnight stays and it worked for me. However, I would check with your accommodation before trying it, as you don't want to find your car towed away or with a ticket on it. And as it is uncovered, you may also return to it and find it buried in snow or with significant build-up of snow plough debris at the rear, as I discovered on that trip. I managed to kick away enough of the build up to get the car out without a shovel, but you may not be so lucky.
In the grand scheme of things, parking in the underground car park is a worthwhile investment to make sure your car starts and you can get out when you are leaving with a deadline to meet.

Mainly covered in snow, and it’s staying quite cold, so it’s not turning into wet slush.

@radar, interesting. I was on 159 only a couple of hours ago, and satisfied myself that it was the one in your pic. But clearly it’s just similar - the pitch, the trees and the right-hand bend at the bottom. I should know, as 156 is my usual route to the Magic 6er.
The piste numbering around there is a bit of a dog’s breakfast!

@tatmanstours, I'm frustrated that 157 isn't open as it's a good one.
Decided to take it (158/156) all the way down to avoid the challenge above the Bergeralm, then did 159 to the Thurneralm, the view isn't that dissimilar.

I've sat and had delicious spare ribs and a pint of Stiegl in front of that fire quite a few times - highly enjoyable especially when its dumping snow outside.

Good evening, sad readings this weekend about the avalanches in the Salzburg area.
How is the overall safety in Saalbach regarding avalanches? Was planning on joining an off piste course for beginners in two weeks but these recent news make one think that I should just stay on the pistes.

@radar, Seems like the meeting point is in Westgipfelbahn Talstation. Arranged by mt-experts.at every Wednesday.
All needed avalanche gear is included based on the course description. Well, it should be if you are going to learn how to use it
But Im not at all interested in participating if the area is known to be unstable. Weather forecasts shows 5mm of fresh snow the days before (it will of course change)
A guide from last year said that fresh snow should rest 2-3 days before heading off piste. Seems reasonable.

@Keke81, currently we are at level 2, towards the end of last week it went up to level 3.
At the moment my forecast is showing a small amount of snow for Sunday next week.
You could ask the tourist office if the area were the course is happening has a high risk.

Hi @Ghost Dog, @summerseat, @Grizwald, I'm currently looking at The View for a week in Feb, looks really good value for money. Don't supposed any of you stayed in one of the superior double rooms? Wanting to get a feel for whether the rooms are a little cramped?

For anyone coming out there is a new Thai Restaurant WOW, it behind Hotel Austria which is between Saalbach and Hinterglemm, it's very nice, it's located on the top floor of a very nice holiday apartments/suite building. If your looking for something different, the bus stop is right there , go there by bus cab back. best to book (you can do it online), it's not that busy at the moment during the week, about a two thirds full but ramps up at the weekend. https://wowthai-saalbach.at

Hi All, does anyone have any experience of renting with Hervis in Saalbach?
Their prices are coming in over 20% lower than all other rental shops in the area - are the models on offer/quality of servicing equipment generally comparable to other shops?

Curious: Are the February School holidays as busy at Austrian ski resorts as they are in France?
Did not know if it was worth skiing in Saalbach/Zell am See/Kaprun during the week of February 14th for a few days.
Thanks.

@jdbzz, yes, we rented with them via the alpy.com website (Hervis's own website uses the same system so it's all the same price). We used a SKIPRESSO code but I think if you subscribe to Alpy they'll send you a code.
Set of skis, poles and boots for my daughter and wife came to £170 for the week. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Both has pretty much brand new boots and the skis both looked in very good condition. No issues with swapping mid-week when my missus found she was crushing a nerve in her foot, swapped to a wider fitting boot (she'd said everything felt fine at the start, so I don't place any blame on Hervis for this).
Location next to the main gondola is handy. I think they have ski lockers in the shop for storing gear but we didn't ask, although we did see folk coming and going into the back.
