Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@toyah807, too early...I think I get my Flachau tickets around September/October.thats for the grandstand, which does sell out quite early. You can create an account on the ticket site and will then get alerts. How will you get there from Flachau?

@holidayloverxx, thank you, I will do that. I have no idea how we will get there but we are likely to be a group of 6 to 8 so probably a taxi or two, booked well in advance. Unless you have a well practiced better suggestion, of course. We will be at the Bergdiamant again.

Good first day at Werfenweng earlier, no ques and quiet on pistes, no bumps or ruts on piste even at the end of the day, wife has jumped up to a solid intermediate with her new boots. Bottom half of 1 was a bit tricky on the last run down but great conditions off the two chairs up top. Hochkonig or Dorfgastein tomorrow depending on what the clouds and wind are doing.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, 12 peaks tour sounds great, a bit like the smugglers route in Ischgl.

I've never skied in the area before but am visiting first week of March with some long time ski buddies. We will have a car and are staying in Bischofshofen. Probably heading to different areas each day.

Anyone got suggestions for "must visits". We are all experienced skiers and will ski anything Piste based.

Sat 28th Feb to Sat 7th / Sun 8th March?

I'll be in Salzburgerland that week with my non-skiing / boarding missus but think I'm going to delay my return by an extra week and base myself in Bischofshofen for a week too.

If my understanding is correct, I should still be able to get a Salzburg Guest Mobility Ticket from accommodation there and use public transport to get to Flachau, Wagrain, St Johann im Pongau - Alpendorf, Zell-am-See / Kaprun, Bad Gastein and even Saalbach-Hinterglemm if I can be arsed.

Could potentially get a hire car for as little as €10 per day (although I'd then need to add on various other costs), so reasonably happy to let the train take the strain for the princely sum of €0.50 mobility tax per night!

Correct. Your Ski Amade lift pass also provides the same as long as it is valid on day of travel.

Question for the regulars - After six consecutive weeks in six different resorts in Salzburger Superski last season, for 2027 we want a rather more chilled and less hard work trip. Thinking of Ski Amade, staying in Flachau. Over the years we have spent many weeks there so it's very familiar to us, but also we can still visit lots of other resorts. We are looking at 4 consecutive weeks, as far as I can ascertain the best 4 low season weeks with least crowds (and lowest prices!) should be 2nd to 30th January does that make sense or is there a better period? Given we would like to stay in the same apartment for the whole time we will need to book early - does anyone know when the 26/27 availability comes up on the Flachau/Ski Amade websites so we can get in asap?

@RobinS, I would say yes to Jan but there are 2 night races in the first week. I've found Jan to be much busier than it used to be. The alternative is March when you risk a slushfest. No idea when bookings open

@RobinS, the night races draw in lots of people for the day, but very few will stay for the week so I've never had a problem in finding apartments during the race weeks. Given you want a 4 week booking, I'd be selecting a top 5 list now and contacting them directly before the season ends to dangle the carrot of a full January before they've even had to work at advertising it. If you want to wait, my experience has been that most places want to have a summer holiday and then come back and put the dates up for winter, so it's typically around August or early September that the availability starts to appear on the website.

Bear in mind that a lot of places have regulars who return for the same week in the same apartment every year, so if you want to take the whole month you'll need to find somewhere that doesn't have this for all of their apartments. They'll always prefer the regulars to someone visiting once, no matter how long they want to stay.

February is more expensive, March is more risky weather wise, so I think you're right to suggest January. And if you want to see the race and the circus around it (autograph sessions, bib draw, legends race, etc) then it's easy if you're in town and parking won't be a problem for you. Just bear in mind that on race day the road in the centre will close from about noon and won't re-open until about 10pm when the race crowds are gone. @RobinS, Yes, you have selected the best 4 week option and most of us "owners" would consider those lower season weeks. We will open up next winter season bookings after Easter. If your looking for an apartment for 4 weeks I'd suggest you contact the owners direct for a deal. I'd also recommend finding an apartment that has the option to do your own laundry/cleaning as those can be significant costs to owners that are passed on to you. Maybe one like the link below:) Obviously prices will depend on location so Flachau/Wagrain will be a bit more expensive than say Radstadt/Altenmarkt.

First day in the area. Started in Alpendorf to pick up hire skis and precooked passes. Skis all fine but Internet down so couldn't collect passes for a couple of hours. Did a couple of laps on the Alpendorf Gondelbahn where they allowed free access until Internet came back. Then made our way across to Wagrain before heading back via lunch at top of Grafenberg.

Really warm all day and low slopes chewed up. Hopefully with fewer people tomorrow it will hold up better. Starting from Flachau we think.

@DJL, definitely quieter from tomorrow, not sure about holding up...warm temps forecast. Get early lifts...achterjet opens at 8am. We had 3 beautiful runs in flachau by 9.15 and went home to watch the racing on telly as we could see the hordes of day trippers at the kasse (we have season passes so dont have the same motivation). If this was my one week I'd ski all morning and have a great lunch as late as possible, no coffee stops

If you see a short woman in yellow with an orange snowheads buff that'll be me. Say hello.

Just back from a week based in Schladming.

Really did show how piste aspect and pitch can negate the lack of altitude when the weather is warmer.

The 4 mountains that make up the area are generally all north facing, and most slopes are of 'red' pitch.

We had no fresh snow with lots and lots of sun virtually every day and there were only the flatter, lower blues of Hochwurzen that were consistently slushy. Most of the runs on the Planai and HK mountains were still firm all the way to the bottom last Friday which was over 15 degrees C in the valley.

We had a day trip to Flachau and it was a similar story there. The runs were very good.

To be honest, being a boarder, I would have preferred a bit more slush as hard packed pistes aren't as fun on a board.

It would have obviously been a different story if we got more precipitation with those temps.

Just back from a week in Wagrain

The snow was really pretty good, especially given the temperatures. Aspect and height mattered (obviously). Decent runs could be found for most of the day. The gentle bunch of reds (seen steeper blues) towards Flachau offered good skiing all day. Sought out quieter parts that few used - eg loops on red 2 and 6.

The best skiing of the week was early on at Zauchensee - as highest part of area and good aspect - but was also the busiest part of the area. Sticking to reds rather than blues offered better skiing.

Runs 34/35 at the other end of the resort were also pretty decent, even down to 750m st St Johann. Also quiet. Alpendorf runs short but good

Of course with temps way above freezing, slushy moguls appeared, but a simple technique change and I skied them much better. Was staying in Wagrain near the base of the short poma so really had to ski down. But wasn’t toooo bad. Why is there only one bar down that slope, save the guy with a trailer and a few tables just above G-Link

Favourite run - probably the one down to Lumberjack Shuttle. Good aspect, quiet. But those lift names in Shutleberg and the colours of lift stations… seriously?

Impressed by number of bars (save under Flying Mozart) and speed of service and prices excellent. Didn’t get round Wagrain much but seems a fair bit quieter than many Austrian resorts and very pleasant. Only saw Flachau from up high and didn’t seem to have the setting that Wagrain has. Excellent location for going both east and west in Snow Space. Seems to have lots of good quality hotels (was at Alpina right by a bus stop, 2 mins from Mozart).

The bus is on a loop, so great in the mornings, but a return from Mozart would take a while.

Lifts just about all excellent as is the way in Austria now. Just two slow chairs over at Zauchensee - not needed (and a very strange gondola for short people over there too…). New 2 stage gondola replacing 3 lifts over Alpendorf side of Wagrain already started build - will mirror the Flying Mozart/G-Link arrangement.

Good edges needed as the base was very well packed and in areas never thawed in the day, so hard surface under scrapings and slush could momentarily catch you out.

Forecast is looking a little wet for Thursday. Where would the locals recommend heading?

I'm not tied to Ski Amade so could go Zell am See / Kaprun / Saalbach-Hinterglemm (apologies if those are considered dirty words these parts!) but am considering the combined ski & thermal ticket for Gastein Valley:

Zell am See has a much poorer aspect than Schladming or Flachau. Kaprun glacier is a glacier so would be much better, but probably busy…

Lots of S-H is directly south facing though met some people at airport on Saturday who had been in Leogang and said that was fine.

But I did Lidl (and Billa and Hofer and Billa Plus and the other supermarket in Bischofshofen) this evening though!

I think I'll hold off for at least one more day whilst debating and hope that the offer is still there. I have the nasty feeling it can only be booked up to 3 days in advance though.

Region experts, we are arriving on the 21st through Salzburg airport. We decided to take the public transport. I think we will take the 270 Bus to Eben P+R. We can continue our journey to Flachau on the public transport but it seems it's a 10 minute taxi ride from Eben.

Does Freenow work at this part of Austria? (It will be midday, so normal hours). I know we can also book with one of the taxi providers in the region.

@ifaour, You can take the 521 bus from Eben P&R to Altenmarkt Marktplatz, change to the 522 from there to Flachau. Bit of a faff but free with your guest cards (which you can get from your accomodation provider by email). The shuttle is probably your best bet and can be booked in advance. It should also be free with your guest card.

Just back from Schladming. Great weeks skiing, the snow was excellent with only the low level links getting soft in the afternoon. Certainly better snow quality than we have skiied in this part of the world post Covid at this time of year.

Quiet slopes, zero queues and the added bonus of a free lift pass. Mountain Restaurants as ever very good.

Stayed at the Hotel Schwaigerhof on the Rohrmoos Plateau, absolutely superb and a genuine ski in ski out hotel.

Today I traded the heavy sugar starting on the lower slopes from 11am and extending up to within 500m of the peaks with temperatures of +4 to +12 in the first part of the week, for -9 at the top and -5 in the valley, and slopes in between with 10-15cm of fresh snow across the whole area with some wind-blown pockets having up to 30cm of new snow.

The valley has gone from nasty brown to purest white. Here's a shot of Wagrain from the G-Link...

I'm guessing it didn't take you long - I found 20cm on the first piste, and although some were clearly bashed flat early this morning many remained untouched and the early skiing was like off-piste.

You can tell it's a good day when there are people hunting for skis in the off-piste areas wink
