@RedandWhiteFlachau, I was half hoping you'd say that! Is there a bus/train combo that's easy? I love Flachau.  |
Yes, train to Radstadt and bus to Flachau, all free on your ski pass I think. But check the train from Schladming (Steiermark) to Radstadt (Slazburgland), there may be a difference when travelling between states.

I know Ski Amade does dynamic pricing in advance does anyone know practically how this works. Ie. Is 2-3 days out too late, does it need to be 7+ days or does it completely depend? We are mixed group arriving on 10th January and will have done a week before at Obertauern. Some of the group might not ski second week or might do a few days or 5-6 days so weighing up advance tickets savings vs flexibility and when we need to decide.

@Ldj226, It does what it says on the tin. Prices might vary but not by more than 5% and a late surge could push the price up. Whenever you book, it will be a little cheaper doing it online rather than at the Kassa. With the current (longer) range weather forecast, we could have great snow but poor visibility that week so if you have fair weather skiers they might want to consider holding off.

I tend to wait until late, because if the first day is a white-out then I'll be saving money...

Nice to see a bit more white on the webcams in Gastein this morning. Not a huge dump but at least light covering down to valley level. Better than nothing and more in the forecast, nice low temperatures as well.

Can anyone recommend a good ski hire shop in Bad Hofgastein? Have taken my own skis for the last 10 years or so, and the prices for the shops by the main lifts seem quite astronomical - or am I just I a time warp?!

I’ve only ever used the one at the main lifts, the Schlossalm Gondola, I think it’s Intersport Fleis. The prices seemed very high to me (and that was 3 years ago) but I’d been used to skiing in Italy where prices are much lower. I’ve since bought my own (for £50 of FB Marketplace!) so haven’t used them for the last few years.
You can get discounts through Intersport and the Ski Amade card so might be worth trying that if you don’t find another hire shop.
It’s been snowing today so looking a bit better for my trip out there next weekend!

Hi folks
I am heading to Bad Hofgastein with my partner in a few weeks.
I was looking at ski passes, does anyone know if you can buy the daily Gastein-only (Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel) passes, even during this high season, if you buy in-person at the desk - and would it potentially be cheaper than shelling out for 5 days of Ski Amade pass (which we're not going to use as my partner's a beginner, we will just be sticking around Gastein)?
I'm guessing the answer's no, but I saw a few indications on the Amade website and elsewhere which suggested it might be possible.
Sadly on the website it seems you can only get the full Amade area passes these days, even though there are still some pages there which refer to the cheaper Gastein local pass. Also, they have implemented 'dynamic' pricing which I'm sure is great for them but seems less great on the paying end.

Update..the road from Salzburg is open, diversion towards Salzburg between Bishofshofen and Pass Lueg, delay only about 30 minutes at the moment but will get longer as the returners get underway

Thanks for the update HL!
El Grillo, I’ve only ever bought the whole Ski Amade pass and only done it online. TBH I didn’t even know there was an option to get a local pass, as you say there’s nothing obvious on the website.
Dynamic pricing works if you buy online months in advance, it’s a little bit cheaper, I think/hope! I paid £323 for mine after conversion from Euros (the exchange rate has improved since then). Most of these big ski areas seem to push you towards buying the whole area pass, fine if you’re local and/or have a car but a bit pointless for a one week trip with flights and transfers. Even more so for beginners. Basically we are subsidising the locals and season pass holders!!

Had an absolute blast for a week based from Zauchensee. Absolutely loved it. Wonderful skiing especially the offpiste tree skiing. Explored the wider area and enjoyed long sweeping runs to Wagrain, flachau and st Johan. Did the 12 peaks black and had a throughly great time. I can report A10 tunnel back open after fire and our trip back to Salzburg airport today was very easy even on Saturday.

Yes, you kindly gave me some tips about doing it last year, unfortunately we didn’t get round to it as it rained quite a lot in the valley so we just stuck around Gastein. We made it to Dienten/Maria Alm one day though which was really nice.
Might try the Alpendorf option or maybe come to Flachau to see what all the fuss is about! I actually fancy the drive up to Zauchensee but maybe my passengers would prefer more time on skis! Arriving tomorrow and thankfully there doesn’t appear to be any 12 degree c temperatures and rain in the forecast for the week this year!

Heading to bad hofgastein next week as part of a large group. Some of them are now curious about lessons.
Any suggestions for private lessons for an older couple of relative beginners?
I assume there’s a village ski school, but are there other options they could explore as well?
Thanks

There is definitely a ski school in Hofgastein, I’ve been weaving around a few of them today! As for private lessons I’m sure I enquired a couple of years ago and found something local that would do what you require. I think I found it on line so perhaps a bit of Googling is needed.

@cardweg, The local school is very good. I'd recommend private lessons for older skiers, especially if they are of similar ability. Maybe book 3 mornings and use the afternoons for practice and skiing with the rest of the group. Request an older instructor when you book. https://www.snowsports-gastein.com/home.html

This Saturday we’re travelling to stay in Hochkonig (Maria Alm this time as opposed to zmulbscg last time) so I’d like to know is there a bus service between resort areas on the Ski Amade pass (Hochkonig / Bad Gastein / Flachau) etc.
I’ve seen timetables for 620 / 621 buses etc from Saalfeden to Maria Alm and resorts in that group but nothing between the resorts areas?
Obviously trying to avoid expensive taxi trips or a week’s car hire when only needed for a couple of days at most to make most of an expensive Ski Amade lift pass (already purchased online).

@oldsnowy, you can get buses to just about anywhere but it would be a long journey with changes. They are largely normal postbuses as opposed to ski buses.

Thanks for quick response - looks like it may be a one off taxi trip day as it’ll save so much time over the bus.

Quick report on conditions in Gastein. Pistes are in great condition, especially in the morning. It’s fairly cold so even in the afternoon they are holding up well, the odd stone here and there but nothing much. Some of the areas surrounding the pistes are a bit bare but it mostly looks nice and snowy even at valley level. If the temps stay low then it should be good here for a few weeks even if the odd forecasted top ups don’t materialise.

@Glosterwolf, I've never been to either, but Werfenweng and Annaberg are within reach and are less likely to be busy. You can of course reach Mulhbach and St Johann, but they're more likely to be popular given the size of the areas at Hochkonig and Ski Amade.

@Glosterwolf, Depending on your ability, you could bag Eben, Radstadt and Fageralm in a day, great little resorts with a few runs/lifts at each. Werfenweng is a good shout too. Filzmoos might be worth a visit, other than that, the Hochkonig is probably your best bet. It is worth noting that Werfenweng and Annaberg are NOT on the Ski Amade Ski Pass, the others I've mentioned are.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, We are 3 advanced who will ski pretty much anything in decent condition quite quickly and 1 who I would say is early intermediate. Not that slow on blue to easy reds but once it gets to 25 degrees and above things slow down dramatically. So we wouldn't want to be covering lots of ground with an average gradient much over 20.
What we usually do is ski everything they fancy doing first and then when they have had enough we leave them on a blue near a restaurant and then go off to do the more difficult stuff. So for that reason covering doing some large areas could be tricky depending on how steep the linking runs are.
Werfenweng looks a good option for a later start on Sunday but I will check out the rest of them now on openskimap. Thanks.

@Glosterwolf, Hochkonig will be perfect for you. Follow the Konigstrail out and back from Mulbach. There's a couple of nice blacks above Maria Alm that can be avoided by those not keen and when you get back to Mulbach, the Black under the Gondola is a great way to finish. There's a crusiy blue for anyone with tired legs. None of the smaller resorts mentioned have any slopes above 20 degrees.

|
@RedandWhiteFlachau, what's that mogully run on the way back to Mulbach that now has a gondola you can take down to avoid it? @Glosterwolf's early intermediate should definitely avoid that one and would need to know what they are looking for
