Brought across from last year's thread.
From 01 May 2025, public transport within Salzburgland is free once you have your "Guest Card" from your hosts. You can find the info here:
https://www.salzburg.info/en/travel-info/arrival-traffic/guest_mobility_ticket
The key thing will be to get in touch with your host and get the digital version. My guests can register ahead of arrival online and once I accept the registration I can send the Guest Cards via email.

A10 Update.
All the road works in the tunnels from Salzburg to Flachau are now complete. There are still road works going South from Flachau and there are new works on the A8 North of Chiemsee.

Happy to confirm the A10 is a dream to drive on. I drove from home - Radstadt to airport area in 45 mins the other week, haven't had that time in a while!
And, the guest card is also superb. If you travel with a bike and/or dog, these need their own separate ticket - cost = a few €.
Happy holidays

I am considering booking first week of April in Flachau. Looking at your old threads to get a sense of conditions. 2025 for April sounded good. Just heading of to find the others.
In meantime - do you recommend it? My eldest is keen for me to book immediately, she loved the area last Christmas.

@NickyJ, it will be quiet...lovely. But, like anywhere, you take a chance on conditions. Last year it was a slushfest by mid morning in mid march, then it snowed so conditions were better later

@NickyJ, Both 2024 and 2025 had large dumps late March which made the pistes pretty good into early April. Yes the best skiing is to be had early morning as it will get warm and slushy PM. Ski early, hit the Wagrainerhaus for sun-filled lunches and then ski down by 2pm.

If i was alone I would definitely have booked
Have in mind that the local climate in Austria is not the same as in France plus in Flachau they have a really good artificial snow System and many north slopes (as many other resorts in ski amade)
Many years ago i Took the risk and booked in April a few days in the easter holidays after a week in obertauern. And the snow in hauser kaibling and Planai was better than obertauern because there was practically only artificial snow

Daughter's new college ends Friday 12 December so wondered about a sneaky week away 13-20. I have never been to Ski Amade so any thoughts or advice much appreciated as it will be early in the season So are there particular locations better at that time of year?

@Snowmadmum, Possibly the best week of the season. Usually a few tourists but mostly locals who ski in the mornings. We have repeat guests who only ever come that week. Flights are cheap (currently showing less than £100 rtn), lift passes on low season price and great deals on accommodation. Down sides, not everything will be open and if you want ski lessons you'll have to go private ("Ski School" starts on 20th). Snow will be good but weather changeable. Best locations at that time of year, probably Schladming or Flachau. Oh and maybe have a night in Salzburg (in or out) for Christmas Markets.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, from your extended experience what is usually open mid December? As an average, there are always better/worse openings.
I know and love the area but always came in January and March.
Will be accompanied by a non skiing OH so looking at winter walks as well.
I remember that @NickyJ was at Christmas and they loved it.

@drporat, Opening weekend is 6th/7th this year and we are being blessed with "DJ Otzi" for some Schlagermusic! Assuming that the weather follows recent patterns we'll get a big dump late Nov early Dec and temperatures will stay low to enable snowmaking. Thus, by 13th we'll have runs open back to the valley and most of the stuff above mid-level will be pisted and operating. Ski Buses will be every 30 mins rather than 20 mins. Seasonal staff contracts usually kick in for Christmas week (20th), so not all the hotels and Mountain Restaurants will be open but they'll be more than enough for the numbers we get. Lift system may not be fully operational but you will be able to ski from one side of Snowspace to the other (Alpendorf to Zauchensee). Obviously if you have a vehicle you can also pop to Schladming, Hochkonig or Gastein for a change of scenery. For non-(Alpine) skiers, we have Winter Walking with marked trails, snowshoeing, sledging (if we have enough snow lower down} and the Therme Amade for Spa fans. Oh and keep the OH happy with a Salzburg night.

Got a friend with links to Alpendorf trying to convince us of a trip over there this season. I've just done a season in Canada and love freeride terrain, my favourite area in Europe so far is Monterosa and the Aosta Valley but should I try Alpendorf this year? Will I be happy with the off piste terrain? Also concerned about the price, looks way more spenny than Italy!

Any local information on the potential impact of what appears to be more significant roadworks on the A10 between Eben and Flachau ? I'd just celebrated the completion of the works on the tunnels further north

How regular are the buses around Bad Gastein in January? I have seen a decent deal for Hotel Mozart but it seems slightly further from the lifts than the quoted 500m (probably 1km) so the bus from outside the door would seem a better option. It may even be a little far for my usual tactic of renting a ski locker and walking.

@toyah807, don’t know about January but they were pretty good late in the season when they wouldn’t be as many people around.
But yup map says 1.1km from the main uplift and its a decent uphill incline on the way to the lift.

@Snowmadmum, not sure if you are in the UK (or your DIY vs package thoughts) but the 13th Dec prices for Ski Miquel chalet in Bad Gastein seem very cheap. No idea what the conditions would be like but I assume pretty similar to the rest of the Ski Amade. I think they allow bookings by the room.
@ster, thanks. Probably just a little too far for the whole group given the incline would mean walking might be completely out.

Thanks @toyah807, thanks for sharing. I am in the UK. Unfortunately I need to wait to see if I can go as I await medical treatment for a recently diagnosed condition, but if I receive the all clear it will now be a last minute decision. I mix and match DIY and package depending upon circumstances: Easter is DIY, Feb half term is Sunweb and DIY, pre-Christmas will probably be package just for ease.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, different roadworks
https://www.asfinag.at/ueber-uns/presse/pressemeldungen/generalerneuerung-a-10-zwischen-eben-und-flachau/
ASFINAG is now launching the general renovation of Salzburg's A 10 Tauern Autobahn, a roughly six-kilometer-long section between the Eben enclosure and the Flachau junction. Two lanes will be available in each direction at all times; work will be paused during the winter months. ASFINAG is investing €43 million in the infrastructure renovation in the Pongau region.
ASFINAG is renewing the road surface, guardrails, signposts, and drainage systems, as well as constructing eight new water protection structures. Noise-reducing asphalt will be used again to reduce noise on and off the route. In addition, the anchor walls at Eben, Reitdorf, and Rohr will be upgraded. Work will be suspended during the winter months of 2025/2026 and 2026/2027, with overall completion planned for the end of 2027.

At the mo, the roadworks start at the services at Eben and end at the Altenmarkt/Radstadt turn-off. Still two lanes, 80kph not 100. Hardly noticeable to be honest, it was such a short distance. Undoubtedly it will evolve over time - or shift along.

Just bought my 6 day ticket and paid the hotel deposit. Only 3 months to wait now!
On my Ski Amadé card I can see what I paid for the last three years, it’s gone up on average over 10% per year over the last 4 years. I paid €282 the first time I booked a pass online in 2022. Not particularly whinging, just pointing it out!
I do find it slightly annoying that each extra day after a 6 day pass in only about €30 more, plus I find it amazing that if you lived in the area you could ski all season for only €900 - or all year winter/summer for €1200!

@japes1275, Sorry to add to your disappointment, but if you live here or, have bought season passes before, you get a loyalty bonus which means a season pass is only €725. I won't make it worse by telling you how much my Ski Lehrer pass is.

Oh thank you for that, I feel so much better!!
Actually I realise I could have done things a lot better last season and on my upcoming trip. Last year I stopped on the way in Lofer on Sunday night and skied there on the Monday before heading off to Bad Hofgastein to start skiing there in Tuesday. What I should have done is stopped somewhere like Maria Alm and just extended my Ski Amadé pass to 7 days for a lot less. Definitely better skiing as well, Lofer isn’t great. I should also choose to do a week in another Ski Amadé resort after my BHG week, instead I go off to the Dolomites. I suppose it’s only a small saving in comparison to the whole cost of the two weeks but maybe I’ll look into doing two or three Ski Amadé resorts next year and making the most of the cheaper priced longer pass.

Snow Report. The first real snow of the season in the village today. Not much but the temperature has dropped significantly. The forecast is looking good for the next two weeks with somewhere between 40-60cm at village level (900m) and hopefully more on the slopes. Fingers crossed it will be great for season opening and fantastic by Christmas.
