@8611, Many of the models are showing something significant in the 2nd half of March, but they are pushing back day by day. It was showing from the 14th a few days ago, then 15th, now 16th...
All weather patterns break down eventually so I'd view the change as inevitable, but the models are just guessing when.

Is the sand hitting the UK going to hit the Alps? It's so grim when it happens

Hi
I'm completely hopeless at negotiating all these different forecasts but is the model essentially showing unsettled weather next week for the NW Alps and then calming down again around the 15th March?
Thanks !

The 14th is a key date, when you can reasonably expect a substantial dump of nice powder, as that is the day I come back from Austria.

You are going in March, so spring skiing is expected. Still takes a lot to melt well packed pistes; sure they'll be soft pm, but that's spring skiing. And if the skies are clear at night the pistes will freeze again even if it doesn't get below 0°C - radiative cooling as space is pretty cold:
"The snow surface constantly emits thermal radiation (heat) to the surrounding atmosphere. When the sky is clear, that heat escapes into space, allowing the snow to efficiently cool. If the sky is cloudy, there is significantly less radiative cooling. Cloud cover re-radiates heat back toward the snowpack.
"Radiative cooling is the primary driver that causes a wet snowpack to refreeze. During the springtime, clear nights are the most important factor in determining if the snowpack refreezes. Ambient air temperature also plays a role, but even if the air temperature drops below freezing, the snowpack may not freeze well if skies are cloudy. Conversely, the snowpack may refreeze during a clear night even if the ambient temperature is above freezing" |
Does Sahara sand have the same effect as clouds in the sense of "blocking" radiative cooling?
The air (at least in Adelboden) has been looking a bit "hazy" since yesterday, which I suspect might be the Sahara sand. It also seems to feel a bit less warm than the previous day, so I suspect the sand (admittedly with some thin clouds too) has been been helping keep the temperature at bay. But then I was wondering whether this same sand still allows the heat to escape at night, or whether in practice it has the same effect as clouds; less heat during the day but less cold at night.

@Gustavo the Gaper, stomp test on the snow outside of mine this morning south-facing slope, and it's still rock hard, though temp is +1 and very hazy sky which is probably the sand, and interestingly enough they're giving out pollution warnings for here!
Planning to drop off the back for Spring snow and then climb back up (900 descent 600 ascent), but timing will be critical again.

Trip to La Tania, 23rd March
ECMWF - joins the party with some bold predictions- this would be good news if this happens - doubt it
The Average ( black line) is twitching around too . Shows snow will be falling and temperatures coming down too.
So we are getting closer - a change in the weather is coming - please !!!

@kb36,
Unlikely at the moment - looking like quite a snowy week I’m afraid - could still change - depends on the high pressure sitting out in the Atlantic - if it shifts further east you will be alright - but at the moment it’s position will allow some western fronts to get in - snow - quite a high line though- so rain around 1100 m
All bloody guesswork - others like Polo have a much better idea
Or try wepowder

@phillip33, that sound absolutely fine to me. Also out in Tignes 15th for a week and I'd prefer it to be snowy, as long as i can see the piste I'm fine!

Trip to La Tania March 23rd
Two weeks to Premier Inn Gatwick ( my daughter’s fav night of the holiday ???? !!!)
If you are relying on GFS and ECMWF then they have rolled back from their heavy dump forecasts, now more like a bit of cold coming in around Friday , dribble of snow , then it goes red hot , looks like i will be lunching on the terraces with a bottle from around 2 .
Still two weeks to go - exciting

Heading out to Plagne Aime 2000 on the 14th March for a week. Forecasts seem to be moving around quite a lot but it does now appear that this week may have some reasonably sunny days intermixed with some snowier events. Is this at present a fair appraisal of the developing general situation?

Hey, WePowder has answered my question too!
"Fortunately, the dust has had little effect on nighttime radiative cooling, which means snow conditions have remained relatively good."
