Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

With more heavy snowfall on Saturday … according to Meteo France and Meteo Suisse.

Got back from Andermatt on the 8th of Feb where we had great conditions. Took the plunge and locked into the Stubai valley for the 28th for another fix earlier this week, hopefully things will have calmed down and the resort will be quieter, Euro/UK school holidays will have ended. Hopefully we'll have the powder to ourselves and a few others. Thankfully Stubai is not on the US Epic Pass
arrangement as are an increasing number of Euro ski area's.

In Flims/Laax. Relentless waves of snow. Yesterday was a little clearer for the most part but back to steady snow again today and visibility dropped again. Think there is enough snow to last until June!

That is great to hear haha, having bought an AlpsPass this season (which includes 3 days in Laax and Arosa as well, among others).

Any idea how the base was before these last few days? Because I reckon up until recently the total snowfall in central/eastern Switzerland had been quite a bit lower than average...?
Thanks!

The base was already decent when we skied at the weekend. Maybe less base than average but the pistes were all well covered. Since Sunday night we have had a ridiculous amount of snowfall. Today on and off snowing but visibility was ok depending on where we were on the mountain. Off piste waist deep from what I could see pretty much everywhere.

Has Epic Pass adversely affected the European areas that are on it? Is that the case at Stubai? I'd always thought American skiers weren't generally renowned for skiing outside of the US...

@mountainaddict, I've been skiing in Andermatt for over 20 years and untill fairly recently it's been generally off most people's radar as has Engelberg. Last season we skied there in Mid March and it was the first season it was included on the Epic pass system, it was US spring break week and it was far busier than I've experienced in the past. We've noticed restaurant and accommodation prices have crept up to more like Zermatt prices also. We were there 2 weeks ago and whilst not as busy as last March its definitely loosing some of its old school Swiss charm. Crans Montana, Verbier, St Anton and the other Arlberg resorts, Montafon, Zell am See/Kaprun have all been included on the Epic pass this season. In the words of Bob Dylan the times are a changing. As I mentioned, Stubai is not on this arrangement at the moment so we should get some quieter slopes from the 1st of March, our first day's skiing there.

Hi all, just wanted some advice. Most models suggest quite a warm period from this weekend and most of next week with fl’s at 3000m plus. Any guidance on how long this will last? I have yet to book but looking to travel weekend of 14/15 March, and likely either Courmayeur or Valmeinier due to package offers. Just a tad concerned this very mild period may stick around for a while, anyone any thoughts?

For Courmayeur sustained very mild weather on its way, day and night. The base won’t disappear but it will be slushy.

Hence the bargain prices in late March?

Cervinia would be a far better bet imho.

Thanks for that @Snowbandit56. Apologies - I'd misread your original post re Stubai/Epic Pass.

Day ticket prices in the mega-Colorado (etc) resorts are forcing people down the Epic and Ikon season pass routes - and effectively pricing out people who (in the past) might have skied there on their one week a year ski holiday Confused

Tarentaise Meteo have just posted that La Rosiere has exceeded a depth of 3m on the snow front at 1850m ,notorious snowy spot on the elbow of the Tarentaise valley by the PSB pass when the North Westerly storms come in straight down their throat .

@mountainaddict, Zermatt among others is now on the IKON pass, I've checked this, this morning. The queue for the Matterhorn Express this morning at 9.45 was huge (my wife showed me a video someone posted) hopefully it'll quieten down when we're there in mid April. In the future I'll be checking out resorts that aren't included. LOL

@mountainaddict, Chamonix last weekend was packed with Americans with IKON/Epic passes, they were largely doing package holidays: 3 days each in Zermatt, Cham and Verbier - they were also often claiming to be Canadian Laughing

I hope that's not the tendency here in Europe as well, because skipass prices are skyrocketing at an insane pace. This year I got a season pass for the first time (the AlpsPass, mostly due to other factors/plans, but the rising prices definitely played a role).
Zermatt is in the Ikon Pass, though I think all European resorts in the pass can be accessed for "only" 7 days. But still it looks like it has a big impact on the crowd, based on what you guys are saying... especially as Zermatt's pricing is completely out of touch with reality (~€400 for 4 days).
Same for the Epic Pass btw; it includes a bunch of European resorts, but for max 5 days.

Quickly getting back on topic (before I get yelled at), most forecasts seem to agree the heat+sun+drought will peak across the Alps on Wednesday but it should quickly cool off again on Saturday. Should such a short heat episode have a big impact on snow quality (considering the huge amounts that fell recently)? And can we rely on this cooling off to come that soon, or is it too early to call?

Yes a definite warm up, probably some lovely spring skiing to be had though.

I’m out on the 1-5th and then 8-12th. The later could be a little questionable if the warm temps persist for the entire 2 weeks.

I’m currently intending to go to Damuls 1-5th. However I could go somewhere higher (needs to be within 4-5h of Munich). Is it worth the bother or should it be fairly similar regardless of height?

It's the deepest snowpack in much of the Alps for years, the prepared pistes are going to stay great for ages. Also, the wiggles I see are trending towards the mean at the end of the month. Nothing to worry about!

Hmmm, not really. It'll be unseasonably (very) mild, but at least in Savoie/Haute Savoie there's so much snow it won't be a problem, as such. It's not like the snow you get in your garden in the UK (Highlands excepted).

The measuring stick up Flégère, f'rinstance, is claiming 3m90 snow depth snowHead that doesn't melt in a week of warmish weather.

Do you have any idea how much they invested in that lift system? €100 per day is fair value for one of the best resorts in the world imo. Plenty of cheaper places if you don’t value what you’re getting…

@Le Grand Renard,

La Tania - so i know i have access to Val Thorens etc. if needed …

Of course i know a lot can happen , and its the last week before you go that really matters , as long as there’s a base
And even with this warm period that base will not all disappear , especially on north facing slopes or blue runs surrounded by trees

I don't know if much has changed since the times I was there between 2017-2023 (well, I haven't seen the new Matterhorn Glacier Ride II yet), but back then it was already easily one of the best resorts I've ever seen (and in my personal top 2), so I fully agree there; only at a lower price.
Perhaps "completely out of touch with reality" is a bit exaggerated, but that doesn't detract from the fact the price has gone up very quickly since then (in my perception, even more than other resorts, which already rose sharply), and that it's the most expensive skipass I know of in the Alps, which makes a season pass a more appealing option every year.

Does everywhere include Austria? It seems like the vast majority of this snow has fallen in the western Alps.
