BiL is out in resort. He is an experienced, American skiier and skilled tourer and backcountry guy.
He went out to ski some bumps low and away from peaks. Says plenty of people heading up the few open lifts and hiking off into the off-piste. Most without any obvious avi gear.
Most will get lucky and think they are geniuses.
I think it's madness.

Was just going to mention that.
People are really stupid - the resorts are all stating to not go off piste, and many saying that applies to just off the edge of the pistes too, yet some just clearly want to die.

I do t know full details but if they were truly off piste something needs done about this in France. It’s a continued theme, some guides taking clients out in huge risk conditions. Happened in the 3 valleys last big dump and I saw it with my own eyes. Not hearsay.
Tragic loss of lives and totally avoidable.

I’d reiterate ‘some’ guides. There are plenty that would say no and be hyper aware of the risks and not take them.

Caveats apply as we're looking long term - but the next 2 weeks continue to look promising for most of the N & NW Alps

@sparkzter, it’s a continued theme but I’m not sure it’s a general reality?
I know it’s been of much debate around the Chamonix guides but I’m not convinced “something needs to be done”.
Terribly sad.

@stefoy4me, Head of pisteurs said it could not be determined if it was natural, triggered from above or triggered by them. Whether the full inquiry will be able to determine the sequence of events remains to be seen. The person above also died.

Given that Tignes were saying stay on the piste, do not venture off piste at all, not even off the side, then all involved were reckless.

Interesting point.....do you think they feel the need to be more protective due to higher numbers venturing off-piste? More all the gear, no ideas to manage/make the resort safe for? Not to mention those with no gear, heading into what they don't know for the social media posts.
Back when I started skiing as child there wasn't a helmet in sight, and I can imagine there were a lot less carrying avalanche transceivers too. I would say 99% wear helmets these days, and I think that is probably a good thing..... |
Many today (sadly) are prone to wild hysteria.
Death by avalanche in Europe remains exceptionally rare.
Less than a 0.0002% chance.
This season's numbers are going to be above-average.
But last season was way below-average.
The numbers always bounce around.
Overall, the rates are trending down (not up).
Fatality by avalanche per-skier has plunged -95% in the past 75 years.

What's the weather forecast then? I'm in Edinburgh avoiding the hordes of half term and the terrible weather
(not that I'm innocent of drifting, but here's another thread for avalanche rumours and scuttlebutt)

I’m also curious in the forecast gossip. Looking at around 24 Feb and onwards and models seem to be flipping all the time. Guess it’s just too far out to know yet.

For those on the ground, did it have a top up over night (Sat/Sun 14/15th)? From the satellite imagery on the BBC its looking like some light dustings, then something more significant on Thursday 19th

Update from Saalbach….arrived Friday, first day of skiing yesterday (Sat). Conditions were almost spring-like - slightly slushy on-piste, and effectively no snow off-piste. Never seen anything like it in Feb before. Started raining yesterday evening, turned to snow overnight. 15-20cm new covered everything with a thin layer. Pistes were mixed today - some nice but some icy from the rain, especially lower down. Found a few isolated pockets of OK off-piste today.
Forecast is for snow to re-start tomorrow morning, increasing through the day and night. 20-40cm new? The forecasts were all too low for the snow last night so I am hoping that it happens again. Pistes are fine due to the incredible snow-making but snow desperately needed off-piste. That said, given they are starting from almost zero, I’m not sure if possible to start properly off-piste skiing this season.
Interesting that this is the second year in a row with very little snow in Austria. 2-4 years ago, it seemed that all the snow was falling in the eastern alps. Maybe just normal yearly variation, or a bigger shift due to climate change?

Another 30-40cm due in the French Pyrenees tomorrow (Mon).
Followed by another 30cm on Thurs.
Wave after wave of precip slamming into the region, week after week.

Just got back from a week in Obertauern (Salzburgerland). Had low expectations due to very modest new snow forecasted, but it snowed more than the forecasts said. There was about 20 cm on the upper parts of the resort Friday morning (and probably 10 ish at village level - its at 1600m), while the forecasts predicted 5-10cm at the top. So this was enough for a fun day riding powder. Left the resort on Saturday lunchtime and it was snowing relatively heavily all morning (though it was dry as soon we dropped to ~1000m)

Looks like decent snow is now falling in Austria, with this week being a snowy one in Niederau (where I am going on 7 March), if the forecasts are correct.

The irony is strong in this one
Looks like another big few days for the Western Alps, whilst Colorado continues a massive drought with no snow on the horizon. This is set to be a great year in Europe, and one of the worst years in history in Colorado.

Quick summary for the week ahead... a snow-filled week, moreso the further north and west you are in the alps.
Perhaps a drier spell from the coming weekend and into early next week.
Growing signs of another N/NW system from the back end of next week... that is very uncertain currently though.

How warm will the upcoming warm and dry spell be? I’m not fussy, I just want fresh snow good visibility and cold weather I’m not an enjoyer of slush.
At least I know there will be plenty of snow on the ground.

Seefeld got a lovely 30cm or so before breakfast, so this mornings riding was epic.
Then sun/cloud most of day and now been snowing for several hours this eve. Perfect.
