Snowing heavily now in Alagna. I see another storm forecast for early next week. Would recommend to anyone mobile to come to the southern alps. The off-piste is good now and it’s going to be great.

Light snow now falling in 3V.
Looking ahead, there may be another few cm picked up in the NW over the coming days, particularly on Friday.
Still awaiting signs of something more significant but it’s nice to have the top up regardless.

A rather general question here, out of curiosity. I know there are good winters and bad winters overall, and that different areas are impacted differently. But do you ever have the situation where France, say, has a great winter and Austria a poor one, or vice versa? Or is it that in a good winter, everywhere does well, but some areas better than others?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

I would think the latter. I'm not sure its necessarily that France as an entirety is having a good Winter, the focus of the last few storms (and the next few on the charts) has been on the Southern Alps specifically which is because of the current set up (as I understand it).

Looking for last minute trips next week - but checking forecasts looks it could be "snow stopped play" in a lot of available places. Pyreneesn looks like it's getting even more. Milky Way is heavy snow from Monday. I thought I'd be checking if was any snow - not too much!

Norway is a gamble, we've had some fantastic ski holidays there in the past, but last year the whole season was a snow drought, the lowest i've seen for years and the slopes that were open were absolutely packed and icy! The Norway 'quiet' bubble had def burst sadly..
They also suffer from wind closure so this can shut chairlifts at no notice causing havoc.
but looking now, most resorts are currently closed due to -30 degree temperatures so no chair lifts running and the cold temperatures are set to stay for some time by the looks of things

@axel80, IMV, TBH, 10-15 cms in a day isn't really "dumping"; not to say it isn't very welcome, of course

Val Cenis ?
Lightly snowing here in Serre Chevalier this morning, enough to cover the terrace which was cleared yesterday, getting to the stage where we're running out of room to dump the snow.
Actually going to have a day offski today, was going to XC but skating in even a little bit of fresh is so tough, so tax returns and Carte Sejour renewals.

Interesting map. Ireland has the highest temperature minima in Europe followed by the UK. perhaps explains some of the popular fear here about cold and snow?
Surprised to see minus 50c in Italy and minus 38c in Belgium, not that far away from Kent.

The -50C temperature recorded in Italy was recorded at the bottom of a sinkhole at 2600 metres above sea level, and was linked to a very specific physical phenomenon. Nowhere near any inhabited place.

Growing signs on a change in position of the jet stream from around 7-10 days from now, possibility shifting the alps into more of a NW/N flow.
Finally bringing an end to the SW flow and constant hammering of the SW Alps/Pyrenees.

That makes the recent weather sound like a bad thing? I guess it was bad for the northern alps. But great for those regions.
It looks like the models are suggesting a return to more normal patterns next Tuesday, correct? That would be nice. Next trip is to Saalbach in 10 days.

It was fantastic for the SW, the best for many many years.
My comment was moreso highlighting how persistent this quite unusual pattern as persisted for.

Growing signs for a big NWStau in around a week from now, similar to what occurred around the 8th Jan. Parts of NW France/Switzerland may get buried.
