Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi everyone. I have literally no clue when it comes to these charts. Do any of you know what the snow is currently like (and likely to be like) in Serre Chevalier the week of half term? Appreciate that may be like asking to predict the future!
Current forecasts say quite a few days of snow next week but not sure how much in reality .

@Travelmum, nobody can give an accurate forecast that far in advance.

Up to date conditions in Serre are discussed here https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=173982

Well in fairness we can at least say that there will be fresh snow now, I think its prob got a reasonable amount in the recent retour d'ouest type storms and in that sense there should be a reasonable amount of snow on the ground at half term

As per actual conditions they would depend on temps and more recent snowfall in the days leading into and during half term so you'll have to wait till about 3 days prior to your trip for that

Good news all round (with powder caveats in brackets, each including avalanche risk complications). Much needed snow for the Dolomites (no base yet). Lots of snow for Pyrennees (with occasional rising snow line). Some snow sneaking over to the Northern Alps (not enough for proper off piste). Snow for France (also with rising snow line) and the Piedemont (cold but maybe smaller amounts than France and the Dolomites).

A lot to mull over if trying to optimise an off piste trip but a useful headline would be more snow for quite a lot of the Alps!

Nice top up in 3V overnight, about 5-10cm or so.

Interesting wepowder forecast for Tues/wed but I’m still not convinced NW French Alps gets anything significant, maybe 10-20cm. The flow is looking too SW and it appears some of them more northerly/inner valley locations may suffer from that.

Perhaps more of a W/NW flow later in the week.

Or maybe I’m completely wrong on this, polo sees much more bullish.

SW Alps however will continue to hit the jackpot, they’re having an unbelievable season so far. It seems that we have been in this flow for weeks upon weeks.

'Fraid it's not looking good @londonskiing. Chamonix forecast is the same as the UK - murky & grey for the next 2 weeks, with rain in the valley. (I've been wanting to get up the Scottish ski areas, which seem to be permanently in fog... Confused)

You'll have to find some trees for visibility. It'll still be better than not skiing and at least you'll get some fresh snow at altitude Very Happy

Figured. It looks to be better at the end of the week for my resort with some sunny interludes. I guess just as long as it isn’t misty and visibility is fine… better than no snow at all though!

I’m in the Monterosa (Alagna/Gressoney). 25-35cm new snow last night and reasonably good viz today…..it was a good day. But still too many rocks lurking just below the surface. It was snowing lightly late-afternoon at the top but not enough to make a difference. And forecast says sun tomorrow. Hoping that the 10-20 cm forecast for Tuesday night shows up.

See to have agreement now on the tuesday/Wednesday snow event.

Should be 50cm+ widely for the SW Alps above 2000m, lets says Ercins South.

French Alps should widely receive 10-20cm with 30cm at 2000m+ the further south and west, the better. Some more inner valleys probably a bit more sheltered, eg Espace Killy but still getting 10cm with 20cm up high.

And then for the southern ridge, Lombardy along the dolomites should receive another dump, widely 20cm+

Lower amounts for the northern Austrian ridge but still a decent freshen up, perhaps 5-10cm.

Enjoy everyone!

When you say Austrian ridge would you include Ischgl in that? Off there on Saturday and lots of the forecast sites seem to differ quite markedly in their predictions?

This could be the most random question ever but that rather large storm causing havoc in the US... could it make its way in some shape or form over to Europe?

Yes. I haven’t been over to the Champoluc side yet. Been staying in Gressoney+Alagna valleys. The main routes down from the Punta Indren are in OK shape. Some rocks and ice. The area needs another 50cm to really open everything up. Hoping for 20-30cm Tuesday night/Wed morning. And I see another storm in the forecast for early need week. That should be sufficient. But it’s pretty good now.

Looking ahead after this system tonight/tomorrow there may be opportunity to pick up a few cm here and there over the coming 5 days or so from a showery NW regime but it will be very localised.

It then appears like there will be more of the same, a SW flow effecting the Pyrenees and SW Alps with more storm systems. This seems to be an endless cycle at the moment.
