Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Found a fantastic last minute deal at A-ROSA in Zurs for 4 nights... contemplating the switch.

How is the skiing around Zurs for an intermediate versus the rest of the Arlberg?

I tend to prefer cruisey blues.

@Astontech, Not been since the week of snow so cant comment on current conditions. However my view is that the best piste skiing is to be found in Zürs. The runs under the Zürsersee and Seekopf chairs are usually really nice first thing perfect for showing off carving turns, Täli from the top of the Muggengrat chair is a wonderful run (though there is a very short steep pitch at the start), assuming decent snow (which there really should be now) the Madloch run down to Zug is worth doing before it gets turned into yet another piste with snow making and it opens up the runs above Lech - though you can get a ski bus, every 10 minutes, to Lech as well, the runs back from the top of the Rüfikopf cable car are nice too. Easy to get to St Anton via the Flexenbahn (buses run back until around 19:00 if you want to stop for a beer or three). Biggest downside to Zürs is that there is really very little there outside of the hotels.

Is anyone able to recommend a ski hire place that has a good selection of wider skis in St Anton? Ideally near the base or train station.

Many thanks

Jennewein which is between Galzig cable car and Gampen chairlift has plenty of wide skis for rent.

@Matrix, +1 for Jennewein, go to the place directly opposite the Galzig gondola station. Its about a 5 minute walk from the station (you can see the main shop from the train station but the hire spot at Galzig better). All the staff speak English, indeed many are Australian. They also have a place at Galzig so you can swap them there if they dont suit. You can book a specific ski online but if you do make sure you send a email to confirm.

SkiWest on Alte Arlberg Strasse, just up from the roundabout. Not the biggest, but excellent on service. Many years of experience.

I assume he meant that.

The rumour on the day was they were all ski instructors (from the blue ski school) and without safety equipment.

I am back in Wales so haven't heard anything regarding the fourth person yet.

@badatbetting, How's the knee?

The media reports at the time (likely to be accurate) were 2 fatalities and two seriously injured (both now known to have died in hospital) and one with minor injuries. That they were a group of instructors makes sense, nothing I have seen suggests a cause of the slide, given the conditions at the time ( the avi warnings particularly applied to north facing slopes) and size seems highly possible it was a spontaneous slide. If that was the case they were pretty unlucky, though there were plenty of warnings not to ski off piste.

@Legendarry, That was a big slide, the debris cone almost made it to the piste at the bottom despite starting not far below the summit. Scary that so much snow can be released by (presumably) a single skier.

@stanton, As so often your info was not completely correct, who cares when it is nonsense about apres bars or whatever but this was more serious. Official information for example the avalanche report linked above say there were two fatalities, two serious injuries (who both died later in hospital) and one person who avoided any serious injury. This is the same as the ORF report which suggests the person who only had minor injuries was Irish but maybe they were Dutch but easy to see how in the circumstances how this sort of information can get confused. The report also confirms that the slide was caused by one of the group.

Skied St Anton this morning. Sunny but not too busy. Pleasant conditions early on, slushy after 11.30. Early on, did the Matthun a couple of times which was not too thin & gave some good technical skiing. The Schindler seemed to have been pisted & was straightforward. The Schindler Hang below was in very poor condition with as much grass//rock as snow. Packed it in at 12.15. Fwiw the snow in Montafon yesterday was holding up better. I may well be back in the Arlberg tomorrow: if so I‘ll provide an update.

Serious Incident

Last Friday night Three young Swedish Men (19,2oyrs) beat up another Swede (21yr) and kicked him as he lay on the street until he was unconscious . This was outside a well known restaurant in town. The victim was transported to Zams Hospital .. The Police tracked down the suspects but did not confess, will be reported but investigations ongoing .......

There were a lot more incidents but the above was the most serious.

Note..

Last week was Swedish Week so it quite normal Smile Smile

[quote="munich_irish"]@badatbetting, How's the knee?

It's a bit of a pain still, I can't really apply strong forward pressure without a decent amount of pain. Physio is helping but I may need the surgery sadly to allow me to ski to a level I'm happy with. Sadly seems I'm not a 'coper' like many others. I'm basically just doing super easy runs and abusing apres as hard as ever!

Just got back to st Anton after my trip to Wales for mum's bday, looks like the hill has gotten a lot muddier since when I left on Thursday, depressing what some higher temperatures can do!

The Austrian embassy still seems baffled by my visa D lol, they seem to be adamant I can work with it, which is completely incorrect (although I'm happy to work if I can!)

Skied in Lech this morning. There were long queues for the Trittlopfbahn, otherwise the lifts were reasonably quiet. The lower pistes were sülzig by midday, but the higher ones were holding up. The highpoint was the Langer Zug which was well pisted & straightforward enough. The low point was survival turns on a mixture of crud & old chop on Route 242. Route 203 was heavily moguled but the snow was forgiving. Am instructing the next couple of mornings, then mountain walking bzw skiing in Montafon. Will probably return to the Arlberg some time next week: if so, will update on conditions.

On our third day here in the Alberg, based in Zurs. Would concur with above, but went to Warth today, and it was noticeably much better in terms of the pistes holding up - even skiing down to the base lifts, the less southerly aspect really meant there was less churn up, and the blacks e.g. 251, were in very good shape. It was quite a stark contrast coming back over to lech and experiencing the bumps on 200 and 201 on the way home - an order of magnitude worse.

A question - thinking tomorrow of at least the morning heading toward St Anton - my wife is not a massive fan of icey reds, so how will the runs on that side fare if we make an early start? And how far would you suggest we bother going before heading back ? (I’ve only done the route going the other way from St Anton about 10 years ago, and it’s all a bit hazy).

@Pejoli, Not been there since spring arrived so this might be a wrong steer but ordinarily the snow is fine until the Zammermoos chair, the run from there to St Anton is usually best avoided unless you want to visit the KK or Moose (though no worse than the the Lech home runs). I think better to head up to Gampen via the Mattun chair (watch out for your calves!) and head towards Nasserein and cut across if you want to get to the centre of the village. The lower part of the run down to Rauz can get pretty messy in the afternoons for heading back

Morning guys- just wondering whether to confirm a few days of beginners off piste instruction in the Arlberg with my wife. How are conditions at the moment? Are people finding some nice spring conditions? Or should we stick to the piste this trip?

Many thanks for any 'on the ground' condition updates!

See my reports above - the Ski Routes (equivalent to simple off piste for assessing the conditions) were mostly OK both in Lech & St A on Tuesday & Wednesday until ca Midday. If you go for off piste instruction, start as early as possible! And don‘t expect champagne powder..

@Francis.S, been here since Saturday and it’s been roasting!! Pistes have largely held up well considering. North facing slopes keeping their shape quite well but southern facing are very slushy and mogully by the end of the day. Had an absolute blast in the sun though and good fun skiing variable conditions so it’s been great.

Honestly I don’t think the off piste is very enjoyable right now. I considered getting a guide for a day but just don’t think it would be money well spent due to the conditions. It’s either rock hard or lower down/south side slushy, which is more enjoyable and actually skiable.

That said there have been plenty of people out and about with touring gear so probably some good spots and it’s good weather for it. Just not sure it would be the nicest intro to off piste.
