My friend wants me to come to St Anton on Sunday. I saw that Schindler and the links at Stuben were closed today – anyone more familiar have any idea of the likelihood of these being open by Sunday, and also the ski routes like the ones coming off Schindler? Also, what are the queues like at the mo? Are we going to be spending the day queueing for lifts?

We are here since Sunday 15th. That was our only day without snow. Monday onwards it’s pretty much snowed non-stop. Sunday and Thursday were the only days where the connections to get over to Stuben, Zurs or Lech were open. Also lifts were delayed opening between 9 and 930 most days. I think it’s been an exceptional week for bad weather and we’ve been unlucky/disappointed as a result. When the connections are closed (ie the higher lifts) then everyone is forced to ski a smaller area of the mountain on fewer lifts so the pistes and queues are very busy.
I don’t think the higher ski routes will be open any time soon. There was a fatal avalanche today in Rendl and the risk is very high so it’s unlikely for a while.
Lech and Zurs have been open every day so you can always take a taxi or bus. However, when the links are closed then the buses are also bedlam !
However Sunday is looking clearer so you may be in luck. It’s not all doom and gloom - the snow conditions are now fantastic on piste and (very close) side piste. If the sun comes out I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

@melandnick, Good report, thanks. Some of this week's crowds will go home tomorrow, but I suspect some areas are still on holiday next week and they will arrive over the weekend. My doubt is also because I could pick a smaller resort and it won't be as busy with holidaymakers, but maybe also not as fun as St Anton.

@Scarlet, Given the weather forecast, under normal circumstances, you would assume that pretty much everything would be open on Sunday (Mattun bowl and Valluga lift maybe not). However given the large amount of snowfall over the last week that might not be the case, I would say see what they do tomorrow. As you know the first day of decent weather after snowfall always results in a mad St Anton powder frenzy. I was there last Sunday ie the last day of clearish weather (Saturday had been snowy) and although there were plenty of folk about it didnt feel crazy crowded but any vaguely accessible area had been skied out by early afternoon.
Pretty scary number of avalanches today all around Tirol.

@munich_irish, yeah, I was looking at Kappl but did a swift Uno-reverso out of that idea following reports on SM that 10 people were buried in a big slide today (all ok, I believe – near the piste so plenty of helpers on site).

there has been activity since around mid day when I saw the avalanche on rendl. at 7pm there are still ambulances and helicopters in the vicinity. I saw skiers under the rendl bahn yesterday, which I am sure is verboten. I hope it was not something like this that triggered this today.

@mcg, Did the slide come down across the track that leads from the various Hinter Rendl & Gampberg routes back to the piste by the hut? If they were on the track that's allowed as it is a proper forestry track, the wooded areas are nature reserves and skiing is forbidden though folk do ignore that. The images appear to show rescue teams digging out directly under the gondola.
There was also another fatal incident at Sonnenkopf the second this week

@munich_irish, yes it looked as if it came right over the hinters rendl exit track. After that i still can't see what happened. However I thought the slide was right of the gondola looking up from the town and it triggered well above the exit track though seeing the reports now it was just left of the gondola route and came right across it.

Some more info on the incident yesterday https://tirol.orf.at/stories/3342832/ a very multi national group, the three fatalities were an American, a Pole and an Austrian (who died in hospital), one seriously injured Dutch man, Irish guy escaped with minor injuries. Clear it was a very big slide but no indication as yet what triggered it.
Given it is still tipping down with snow (wet in village) and likely to continue until late this evening Schindler unlikely to open in the morning until all the avi clearance has been done, which might be Monday but no doubt a queue will form on the off chance of the lift opening. Hopefully no more "incidents".

@munich_irish, Do you know if this was a guided group caught in the avalanche ? Given the nationality mix it looks like it might be.

@PBJ, Not necessarily, might be Innsbruck locals. Many friend groups are are very internationally mixed.

@PBJ, I very much doubt it. There will be more than enough work for the guides when the conditions improve next week. There has been nothing in the reports to suggest there was a guide involved, indeed nothing to suggest the slide was triggered by a skier (though it might have been) the avalanche report referenced above mentions significant possibilities of spontaneous natural avalanches on north facing slopes. The incident @stanton refers to caused a lot of local upset. I am sure both the recent court case and also the recent incident in Val d'Isere are also in the back of people's minds
PS anyone know why Zürs has been completely closed this afternoon? Just seen that the Arlberg Pass is closed, cant remember that happening for a long time so maybe connected to Zürs shutting down.

Just answered my own question. From ÖAMTC
| Quote: |
| While the traffic chaos on Friday, caused by heavy snowfall, had largely eased on most roads across Austria, the situation worsened on Saturday in the Arlberg region: Due to the threat of avalanches, the Arlberg Road (L197) in Vorarlberg between Langen and Stuben had to be closed at 5:00 PM. The road between Stuben and St. Christoph had already been impassable for some time due to the snow conditions. The Flexen Road was also closed between Alpe Rauz and Zürs. Stuben, Lech, and Zürs will remain inaccessible by road until at least Sunday morning. |

I think we've sacked off any plans for a St Anton trip tomorrow. There was talk of driving over to Lech because of the closed links, but the road closure has scuppered that anyway. I'm guessing that the bits of St Anton side that are open tomorrow will be overcrowded as a side effect, as well as because anyone in Tirol today received a government phone alert about avalanches!

@astontech Enjoy Damüls. I‘ve done a lot of mountain walking there, but relatively little skiing. (Tho‘ I‘ve skied the area at Faschina under the Glatthorn quite a few times).

I am actually considering a last-minute swap to either Zurs or Obertauren as I am a little worried about the conditions after todays rain and incoming high temps.
Thoughts?

I‘d go to Obertauern. Can‘t see the snow holding up either in Bregenzerwald (ie Damüls) or the Arlberg (Zürs).

@Astontech, The forecast for the next two weeks pretty much everywhere is early spring weather but dry. I agree St Anton can be miserable when it rains but that is the same everywhere. However the Arlberg has had much more snow than was expected over the past week (the road closures are unusual only happen in really heavy snow) so conditions there are likely to be better than most places. Zürs probably a good option as it avoids the afternoon slop that will be found on the home runs into Lech & St Anton though there are fewer sunny terraces for beer drinking! Obertauern is pretty small, the runs are generally short.

But more likely to have decent snow conditions in Obertauern than the Arlberg if the forecast is correct.

I actually don't mind a bit of softer, spring-like skiing.
I am just unsure whether the heavy rain would have put the snow in a bad condition or if it won't have made much difference.
Seems like Damuls has about 120cm base currently.
If the rain wouldn't have had a noticeable difference after a week of sun anyway then I am happy with Damuls, I will probably ski 9-2 then relax at the pool from then onwards.
